Tuckersmith Township Council set sqlary rates for its employees at a meeting Wednesday. The salary for clerk­ treasurer John McLachlan was raised to $19,000 from last year’s salary of $18,810, plus a car allowance of $1,- 500. His assistant will con­ tinue to be paid at the rate of $3.50 per hour, but this is un­ der review. Road Superintendent Allan Nicholson will receive $15,000, up from $13,405. Road grader operators will get $6.00 per hour, up from $5.48; mower employees will be paid $5.00, and labourers, $4.00. Female employees of the township were awarded in­ creases amounting to eight per cent — Vanastra Day Care Centre director Karen McEvying $11,051 up from $10,233; her assistants, Deb­ bie Denomme, $8,640 up from $8,000 and Beatrice Thomson, $7,674 up from $7,- 106. Vanastra Recreation manager, Diane Durnin, will be paid $12,960 up from $12,- 000 paid last year. Her part- time assistant manager, June Tomkins will receive $4,680 up from $3,760, an in­ crease of 24 per cent because of more hours put in at the recreation centre. While the three coun­ cillors held their allowances to $40 per council meeting the same as last year, Reeve Ervin Sillery got $55 up from the $50 per council meeting last year; and Deputy Reeve Robert Bell will get $45 a meeting, up from $42.50. The rate for non-council meetings has not been set. These include Fire Board, hospital board and com­ mittee meetings. Council turned down a re­ quest from the Vanastra recreation centre for authority to add $200 to the annual rent which the Vanastra day care centre pays for use of rooms in the recreation building, In other business, council hired W.D. Wilson, Brucefield, over eight other applicants for the job of sell­ ing dog tags in the township for $2.00 per tag. The Clerk reported he was receiving manycomplaintsabout dogs. “It’s terrible,” he said as he reported at Vanastra there were people who were afraid to go out walking on the streets at night. Other complaints came from the Egmondville and Brucefield areas. Council accepted the resignation of Phillip Bradley as animal control officer, effective February 1 as he has a position out of town. Because of illness previously he had not been able to work as control of­ ficer. Council will send him a letter of appreciation for the work he has done. The clerk was authorized to advertise for someone to replace Mr. Bradley. Requests for building per­ mits were approved for Calvin Bisback of Walton building a barn on part of a lot on concession 1, Huron Road Survey; and for altera­ tion to the historic Van Eg- mond house involving alterations to the house in a restoration project. A number of council will attend an Economic Development seminar at the Goderich Legion hall on March 28. A report from the water resources assessment unit of ministry of environment stated that tests made of the well water supply shortage of Howard Shanks of Kippen does not demonstrate any damage to the well caused by the installation of the Kippen drainage system recently constructed. Council received notifica­ tion of Tuckersmith’s share of costs at the Seaforth land­ fill site amounting to $2,184, up from $1,600 in 1978 due to cost of a man and tractor hired to cover over garbage on a regular basis. Road superintendent Allan Nicholson reported the township garage had been broken into again recently but he estimated that the loss was small. He reported too that three road signs had been stolen. The clerk was authorized to open a separate account for the Canada Works grant of approximately $19,000 to the Vanastra Recreation centre.
