According to information
available, at a meeting on
January 20,1954 of a group of
Rebekah ladies were ap
pointed to work with the
Recreational Council in
arranging a club for the
older citizens of the town and
community. Later in
January a committee of each
of these groups, Mrs. Dr'.
Steiner and Mrs. Harry
Beavers, representing the
Rebekahs, met with
Recreational Council and
expressed their wish that
they were interested in
* sponsoring a club for the
Senior Citizens. Town
Council welcomed the idea
and agreed to assist in the
project.
and Mrs. Wes. Simmons, Mr.
and Mrs Maurice Quance
were named also to plan a
future policy of the club.
They reported the
following appointments;
president - Mr. Wes. Sim
mons; song leader - Mr.
Walter Cutbush; secretary
treasurer - Mr. Geo,
Lawson; A Committee to be
appointed each month to
arrange a program for the
next month and to see that
some were asked to serve
lunch.
The committee suggested
that a box be placed at the
door and anyone wishing to
donate, put their offering in
the box to help pay the cost of
such things as pickles,
sugar, etc. and ladies all
bring sandwiches and this
system is still being carried
on, 25 years later with no
complaints.
Over the years we have
had many organizations,
such as choirs from each and
every church in Exeter and
surrounding area, even our
Dutch friends with their
choirs and musical groups.

club decreased in numbers
for awhile but has increased
to around the 100 mark
again. We have nearly
enough to become a star
member club, in our
Provincial Organization.
There have been quite a
few taking their turn as
president, sec.-treasurer,
and serving a term on
program committees and
also serving lunch on special
occasions who have shown
leadership which has made
our club the success it has
been and we hope to be.
If the plans that are in the
making at the present time
are able to be carried out, we
can look forward to a
wonderful year in Exeter
Senior Citizens Club who as
far as I know have very little
financial assistance, either
from the town or govern
ments except two grants of
$200. each within the last
several years from the
Provincial Government but
still hope all Senior Citizens
visit us during the year and
enjoy our good times and
socialability.
Some of those that I
remember during my wife
and I’s coming to Exeter a
out 15 years ago, are also
faithful members, namely,
Cecil Skinner, who put many
hours planning and taking
his part in the organization
as President. We hope
he can be
summer
celebration.
Another
remember spending a lot of
time and driving a lot of
miles to take his place as
song leader and president
and any where he could help,
was Jos. White, who lives in
Seaforth now. We also hope
to see him during our bir
thday year and remember
old times.
Next we have Mrs. A.
Rundle who terminated her
two years as president, Mrs.
Ed Finkbeiner as secretary
and Miss Verna Greenlie as
sec.-treasurer, who served in
their jobs endlessly and
faithfully, nothing being too
much trouble for them to do.
Once again we remember
all these former faithful
members of the past 25 years
which took their turn in
helping and making our club
t a huge success. Among them
1 was Mrs. Frank King, who
was always on hand to play
We have also had musical
talent from other areas such
as Hensail, Zurich, Seaforth,
Credition, Centralia,
Kirkton, Grand Bend and
many more.
A great many of the
musical groups being
arranged through the
labours and instigation of
one named Bob Heywood,
who everyone thinks a great
deal of his part in en
tertaining the Senior Citizens
and obtaining talent from
near and far. We have ap
preciated his talent and work
and we also appreciate
groups in the area such as
Ale thia. They are thought
very highly of and ap
preciated.
Our club has been blessed
with a great deal of talent,
both in music and en
tertainment but also with the
labour of all those who so
faithfully served as officers
and on committees of our
organization and have made
it what it is today, 25 years
after a standing start, with
still quite often an at
tendance of around the 100
mark.
We think of and remember
some of the family names
back over the years, those
that never said no, when
asked to take hold and give
our club a boost. We are
certainly blessed by the fine
times we have had together
and still hope to carry on.
We welcome anyone who
cares to come and share with
us our joys and enjoyments
of one another’s company.
On looking over the records,
we run across the family
names such as, Steiner,
Lawson, Lindenfield,
Skinner, Coates, Cann,
Martin, Elliott, Fisher,
Miller, Ferguson, Dougall,
Passmore, Powe, Frayne,
Schroeder, Taylor, Pfaff,
Wright, Earl, Cutbush,
Penhale, Kirk, Sander,
Doupe, Hackney, Bowden,
Jory, Duncan, Southcott,
Hunkin, Sweet, White,
Gunning, Quance, Skinner,
Ford, Arthur, Granger,
Squires, Rodd, Rundle,
Mills, Greenlie and many
more that we can’t
remember in the early years
of our organization.
We have many more faith
ful members still after 25
years, willing to take part
and enjoy the socialability of
our Senior Citizens Club. Our

gesture, promised the

The first meeting was
arranged for February 2 and
the Rebekahs very
graciously assumed the
responsibility of supplying
the program and also the
lunch. A Mr. Secord of
Hanover of Community
Branches was present and
defined the advantages of
such an organization.
February 2, sixty people
attended this meeting with a
program of cards, sing song,
entertainment, lunch and
dancing.
