HUGH MORENZ Shipka’s grand old gen tleman, Herbert Harlton, who is 96 years young, born, raised and lived in this area all his life recalls going to Sunday school and church, in 1887, when he was five years old, and the services held over the blacksmith shop, owned by Sam Hawkins. He remembers when the church was first built in 1888 and the first minister had a five circuit charge, helped by local preachers who in cluded James Young, George Sherritt, William Sherritt and Mr. Poulter. Another remembrance he has is running down to Shipka two times a week for the mail. Not everyone had telephones in their homes in the late 1800s and early 1900s. There were two phones in the Shipka store, one the Bell telephone and the Crediton rural operated by Dr. Orm, later bought by Francis Clark, and still later bought by Hay township telephone. By having two phones it occasionally eliminated a pay call. Earl Guenther of Dash wood recalls the Shipka Post Office closed on September 30, 1913. This was the beginning of rural mail delivery in this area. The late Art Finkbeiner of Grand Bend remembered working in the Shipka flax mill at the wages of 25c a day. A remembrance of the late Mrs. Herbert Harlton was that as a school girl there were 130 on the Shipka school roll, and often three children sat in one seat. Mrs. Art Finkbeiner recalls a story of the days when her grandfather, one of the first settlers, moved into the district. When the children were sent for the cows in the evening their mother would blow on a loud horn at regular intervals, to give them direction in case they were lost. Arnold Keller recalls his father Karl Keller and his uncle Conrad Keller of this area working in the Shipka flax mill. Personals Mr. & Mrs. Bill Finkbeiner and Lori have returned from a 10 day holiday in the Orlando area of Florida. Also travelling with them were Nancy’s sister Mr. & Mrs. Edward Glavin and family and the girl’s grand mother, Mrs. Bea England of Crediton. I know I have no more chance of reversing the metric thing that I had of another of my lost causes: that pale pink maple leaf on a dirty grey background that is Canada’s national flag. But I wish the AMC luck. And I’m go ing to use my bumper sticker, if only to annoy my neighbour, a math teacher, who has been flaunting a “Think Metric” sticker for several years. My sticker is bigger, white printing on red. with a big hammer pounding down on the slogan, “POUND OUT METRIC”. The organization also has a stubborn little war-cry I rather like. “We won’t move our feet an inch.” i...........j.
