Times-Advocate, 1979-01-24, Page 9Pee wees lose in Legion Waxers win twice Times-Advocate, January 24, 1979 Page 9 Bantams win gold medals in Clinton r T.ocrinn hnn. i -The Exeter Legion ban toms skated off with the gold medals when they cap tured the “B” championship at the annual Clinton tourna ment, Sunday. The locals scored a 2-1 win over Hanover on Friday to earn the top spot in their division, and then clipped Seaforth 2-0 in the cham pionship contest between the two divisional winners. Bill Glover started Exeter off on the right foot in the championship game when he blinked the light at the 1:39 mark of the first period with what proved to> be the winner. Mike Clark potted the in surance marker early in the second on a play with Dave Underwood and Dave Shaw and that was all they needed as Peter Dearing posted the shutout with a couple of big saves on the Seaforth skaters. Members of the cham pionship team, which is coached and managed by Jack Fuller, Jack Underwood and Bruce Shaw, are: Peter Dearing, Jamie Chaffe, Bill Glover, Mike Murray, Mike Clark, Dave Underwood, John Kernick, Jim Siddall, Scott Pin combe, Scott Batten, Steve Prout, Scott Brintnell, Mark Vandergunst, Trevor Boyle, Tom Coates and Dave Shaw. The locals took to the ice in Clinton on Friday, know ing a tie was not good enough against Hanover as the.latter enjoyed a better goals for and against record in the division standing. Exeter scored early in the contest when Steve Prout slipped the puck into an open corner at the 1:27 mark, finishing off a relay pass along the front of the net with Scott Batten and Scott Brintnell. Mike Clark then scored what proved to be the winner when he picked up a stray pass at centre ice and raced in all alone to hit the top corner. Hanover whittled the lead to a single goal late in the game, but Peter Dearing stopped their fevered attempt to get the equalizer in the last hectic minutes. The contest was a hard hitting affair throughout. In two Shamrock league games against East London, the bantams skated off with a 7-2 in London, Tuesday, but were held to a scoreless draw when the teams returned to the rec centre, Wednesday. The 0-0 game is an oddity in minor hockey at the ban tam level. The Exeter crew scored all seven of their goals before East London hit the sheet in the first of the back- to-back games. Mike Clark, Dave Underwood and Jim Siddall each scored a pair, while the single was picked up by Scott Pincombe. Captain Tom Coates had two assists to lead in that department. In the Wednesday night game, the locals dominated play, but couldn’t find the range on the several good scoring chances they did get. The duo of Rob Rozanski and Lance Berry shared the shutout for East London, with Peter Dearing earning the whitewash for Exeter. After playing in the Clin ton tournament, Friday, the locals quickly raced off to Lucan for a scheduled Shamrock game and scored a 4-4 tie in their second out ing of the night. Lucan came back from deficits throughout the game to gain the tie, scoring the final equalizer with less than three minutes to play. Mike Clark paced the Ex eter attack with a pair’ of tallies, while the singles went to Scott Batten and Dave Underwood. Drawing assists were Underwood, Tom CoatesM Dave Shaw and Scott Brintnell. Steve Glenn potted three for Lucan with Hugh Dietrich getting the single. Lucan coach Charlie Glenn ended up with a major misconduct at the end of the game for abusive language towards the visiting players. Pee wees blow lead The Exeter pee wees blew a two-goal lead enroute to a 4-2 loss to Clinton that sent them to the sidelines in the annual Legion tournament staged in Blyth, Saturday. It was one of the better games on the program, with action going from end to end. Despite the four goals he allowed, Rick Gilfillan was one of the team’s stan douts as he kicked out several hard shots. Linemates Steve Batten and George Pratt provided the scoring attack for the locals. Batten gave the team a 1-0 first period lead on a play with Pratt, and the pair reversed their roles on the second tally. However, Clinton got roll ing in the last period to erase the margin and sideline the locals. In Shamrock league action this week, the local pee wees suffered two defeats at the hands of East London. The latter won 7-2 on their home ice, Tuesday, while they eked out a 3-1 win at the rec centre the following night. Exeter had to use cen treman Jeff Pfaff in the nets for the first game due to the .., t * - illness of regular netminder Rick Gilfillan. Ken Renning and Steve Batten scored in the game at London. In Wednesday’s game, East London scored three times before Exeter hit the sheet in the final minutes when Renning finished off a play with Steve Gould. Playing in Lucan, Friday, the locals picked up their first Shamrock league point in several weeks as they came up with a 2-2 tie. Darken Vandergunst and Ken Renning scored for Ex eter, with the assists going to Jeff Pfaff and Steve Gould. John Cook and Ted Hall replied for Lucan in the fast-paced game. Waxers win pair The Exeter Waxers won two of three Shamrock league novice tilts this week, posting one-goal margins over Lucan and Mt. Brydges. Their loss came at Dorchester by a 4-0 verdict. Playing at the rec centre, Sunday, the locals scored a 1-0 win over Mt. Brydges, with Fred Gregus getting the shutout. The lone goal came at the mid-way mark of the first period when Steve Lingard sent Jon O’Connor into the clear and the latter found an open corner. The action was from end to end in the contest, but neither team could find the range on several other good scoring attempts. Captain Garry White scored a pair of goals as Dorchester posted their 4-0 whitewash over the novice crew on Saturday. The game was more even than the score indicated as several Exeter players just missed open comers, while Dorchester picked up a pair of tallies on rebounds off good saves by Shawn Moore. Exeter’s frustration show ed in the third period when Steve Lingard stick-handled through the entire Dorchester team, pulled the goalie out of the net, and then shot the puck just past the open comer. Wednesday, Exeter scored a 2-1 win over Lucan. The locals scored on a power play in the first period when Don Perry fed a pass to Jon O’Connor and the latter found the range from a sharp angle. Terry Ouimet evened the count later in the period on a play with Darren Niel. Scott Boyd then rapped in the winner for Exeter in the second stanza on a play with Doug Clark and Jarett Kobe. Lucan came close to even ing the count when they en joyed a man advantage in the final two minutes of the contest, but Fred Gregus made a couple of big saves to preserve the win. against Byron with goals early in the second period, but the Londoners* then rapped in five to pull the game well out of reach. Sean Whiteford scored two of Exeter’s goals and assisted on the other, which was potted by Ron Loucks. The latter also had an assist, as did Terry Zachar. In their tournament opener against Goderich, the locals stuck with the county town team through the first two periods, but watched three goals go into their net in the last stanza as they lost 5-1. Goderich scored twice in the first period, but Sean Whiteford cut the lead to a single tally in the second when he blasted a hard shot from just inside the blueline that found the mark. Bill Renning, Rick Linden field, Wayne Parsons and Wayne Smith scored for Ex eter. Ed Willis and Doug Fletcher had two assists each to lead in that depart ment, while recording one were Guy Dietz and Larry Dawson. Following the game, they announced they would turn their one-third share of the game’s profits over to Big Brothers, who had originally expected to split the proceeds on a three-way basis with the Flyers and the all-stars. John Stephens said this week the proceeds from the gate and the bar at the rec centre hadn’t been tabulated as yet, but said it was “not too bad for theifirst attempt’.’ The game itself wasn’t too bad either from a spectator standpoint, as the all-stars hung with the Flyers throughout the game and the play was actually closer than the score might indicate. The all-stars, obviously laboring under the problems associated with select players not accustomed to playing with each other, missed several good scoring attempts and were thwarted by some stellar netminding by the St. Marys duo of Rob White and Don Stewart. St. Marys took a 2-1 lead at the end of the first, scored the only goal of the second and showed their superior conditioning when they potted three more in the third. Former Junior “B” star Gerry Seguin paced the Flyers attack with a pair of goals, while adding singles were Murray Pickel, Pat Payton, Doug Kennedy and Tom Hodgins. Ron Funston of Centralia scored the first goal for the all-stars, with Randy Funston picking up the assist. The latter scored the second tally with an assist to brother Ron and Rick Schilbe of the Zurich Buckeyes. \ Twice AS MANY PRIZES!
