Keith Brown continued his series on the book of James, basing his sermon on "The Problem of the Tongue." He told the members of the congregation that we all bear a terrible responsibility for the use of our tongue which usually reveals our hidden spiritual condition. Satan has no more effective implement than the 'unbridled tongue and we should guard our remarks by three questions; is it true - is it necessary - is it kind? If we cannot answer yes to all three we should be silent. Profitable ways in which to use our tongues would be to bear Christian witness of God's goodness Now and to be in- struments of His faith and goodness. Hope to see you there, 4-Hers and your Moms, Two abandoned houses were destroyed by fire early Tuesday morning in the area covered by the Luchn detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police And another house along with a barn were saved by firemen. An OPP spokesman said it was believed all were started by Hallowe'en pranksters, Members of the Lucan volunteer fire brigade were called out at 12:15 a.m. when an unoccupied house on Highway 4, just south of Lucan caught fire. It was owned by Willis Hotson, RR 1, Grand Bend and was com- pletely destroyed. The second house lost was in London township. The Ilderton fire department, responded at 1:45 a.m. At 2:15 a.m. the Lucan fire department was able to save. an unoccupied house on Concession 2 in Biddulph township owned by Arnold Lewis, Clandeboye and an empty barn on Concession 1 owned by Felix Miehalcewicz, London. The investigations are being carried out by Constables Jim Craig, W. R. Disher and J.A. Wilson. Girl struck Officers of the Ontario Provincial Police detachment at Lucan are investigating an in- cident which occurred at 5 p.m, Monday afternoon. A 14 year-old Lucan girl received minor injuries when she was struck by an unknown vehicle while standing on the east curb of Highway 4, just north of Concession 4 in Lucan. No injuries were reported and Constable UCW ready , for catering Members of the evening unit of the Lucan United Church Women, held their October meeting at the Church Tuesday evening, with the leader, Mrs. James Lockyer, chairing the brief business meeting. Mrs. Wm, Froats read a seasonal poem provided by Mrs. Frank Goring and the theme hymn, "Just a Closer Walk with Thee", opened the meeting. Mrs. M,H, Hodgins and Mrs. James Lockyer led in a service of Thanksgiving with Mrs. Mrs. Ed Melanson at the piano. The roll call was answered by giving a Bible verse, hymn or poem containing the word "Harvest". Members were asked to save Kraft labels and place in the envelope on the Francis St. en- trance bulletin board. This unit is responsible for serving luncheon to the visitors who will be calling on members of the congregation on Sunday, Mrs. Lockyer agreed to be on the nominating committee for the general U.C.W. executive and Mrs. Keith Brown was authorized to speak for the unit should the request come to cater for the Avon Christmas dinner as has been the case the last two years. The roll call for November will be a "News item on Jamaica." Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Hodgins agreed to write a letter to Jack Riddell M.P.P. on behalf of the unit, urging the raising of the: drinking age" from 18 to 20. This is a follow up on a request from a Presbyterial meeting held recently in Strathroy. A discussion on "Education in Canada, Cuba, China, and Tanzania," the last section in the study book "People arid Systems; was led by Mrs, Hodgins. Refreshments were provided by Mrs. Lockyer. The guest speaker was Don Inslay, president of Ontario Division C.C.S, and the manager of C.F.R.B. radio station Toronto, He gave a very stirring address which he titled "Coping with Cancer'.' "We are involved with people" said the speaker. "We may build handsome lodges for cancer patients but without people this is meaningless. To you the volunteer thoughtful work will provide self fulfillment beyond anything you have ever felt." "There never has been more need in this society for volunteer service than today. There is a new challenge which deals with the relationship with people with terminal cancer to allow children to visit the dying patient. Zero in on the lives of the terminal patients, The professional group in relationship with family and relatives is being reviewed by the medical committee in our own Cancer Society" said Mr, Inslay and in closing he recited the poem "I shall pass this way but once". Members of the Sunshine and Busy Buddies groups held their weekly meeting Thursday af- ternoon, in the Masonic Hall, with president Gordon Hotson presiding. In the absence of the secretary, Ethel Crouch, Iva M. Hodgins read the minutes and took notes. A few moments silence were observed in memory of Mrs. Helen Thompson and sympathy is extended to her family. A motion was passed unanimously that contributions should be made to either the Heart Fund or the Cancer Society, alternately, upon the death of a member, as a memorial from the Club. Two new members were welcomed to the club, Mrs, Aaron Scott and Mrs. Marie Turner, commencing at about 7 p.m. Once again we request you leave on an outside light to assist the canvassers. All our poppies and wreaths are purchased from Vet Craft, which is comprised of disabled veterans and in this way we help them find employment and at the same time use the proceeds we receive to assist the less fortunate ,veterans within our own municipality and surrounding area.
