The Lucan-Ilderton Jets suf-
fered two defeats this week in
Ontario Hockey Association
Continental senior league play
and both were by large scores.
Friday night at the Ilderton
arena, the Jets were dumped 11-2
by the London Kings and Sunday
night at the London Gardens, the
Kings were again victorious, This
time the score was 11-5.
This week's only action for the
Jets is a repeat of last week as the
London Kings will be back at the
Ilderton ice palace Friday night
at 8:15 p.m.
Saturday, the L-I club travels
to Ithica, New York for an
exhibition contest against a team
of former college players. The
game will be played at Cornell
University.
The game was arranged by
Scott Graham of the Jets who
played college hockey at the
University of St. Lawrence in the
state of New York.
For those who have always wanted a successful hockey
career and didn't quite make it, don't give up,
Old timer hockey teams and leagues are springing up
throughout the country. These groups are for hockey
players who are 35 years of age or older.
Here in Exeter Bev Skinner is heading up the old timer
organization with scrimmages each Sunday morning at 9:30
at the South Huron Rec Centre.
The new president of the Canadian Oldtimers' Hockey
Association and the development director are no strangers
to this area.
Randy Ellis who played several years here during the
second World War with the Centralia RCAF Flyers is the
national president and the development director is no other
than Don "Boom",Gravett.
Gravett operates out of the Peterborough office but still
lives in Hanover where he was recreation director for many
years after filling a similar position here.
Ellis said he was "stunned and enthusiastic" after be-
ing elected president of the COHA. He played last year with
the Huntsville Oldtimers and competed in the annual Euro-
pean tournament.
The rules for oldtimer hockey are somewhat modified.
Body contact and slap shots are not allowed. This is an ideal
situation for those too young to get all their hockey kicks
from the television set.
While the minimum age is 35 there is no maximum, If
you can still skate that's probably the main requirement.
In some material left recently by Boom Gravett we
read that Jo Jo Grabowski is playing for the Quebec City
oldtimers at the age of 63. Grabowski played junior hockey
with the Oshawa Generals in the early 1930's.
Of special interest is the fact Grabowski lost an eye
during a practice with Oshawa that cut short his hockey
career, but, he's back having fun with the oldtimers,
Another fellow who lost an eye while playing hockey,
George Parsons is now general sales manager of CCM in
Toronto a firm specializing in face masks which will pre-
vent eye injuries.
Parsons lost the sight in his left eye when he was play-
ing with the Toronto Maple Leafs against the Chicago Black
Hawks on March 4, 1939.
Parsons reports that there were 37 eyes lost and 457 eye
injuries during the 1976-77 hockey season.
The NHL rule which forbids anyone with less than nor-
mal eyesight from playing went into effect in 1932, seven
years before Parsons was injured.
The former Leaf thinks it would be a good idea for old-
timer hockey players to wear face protectors.
He continued, "I would recommend it for the oldtimers
especially because most have families and they're not get-
ting paid for playing, so if they have an accident it could
affect their position in life."
Getting back to the local situation, Bev Skinner who is
in charge along with rec director Kirk Armstrong issues a
welcome to anyone 35 years of age to come out to the Rec
Centre any Sunday morning at 9:30 a,m. Skinner added,
"This year we are not going to be playing competitively, so
if you are a year or two short of 35, come anyway."
Many local buyers
A number of area harness horse enthusiasts parted with
goodly sums of money at two recent sales, namely the On-
tario Blooded Horse sales at Flamboro Downs and the
Canadian Standard Bred Horse Society Yearling sales at
the CNE in Toronto.
Andy Hardy of Lucan parted with $30,000 for year-old
Ideal Killean, a bay colt son of High Ideal and half brother
of Race Time Killean, a three-year-old with a mark of
2.01.1.
Dave Morrissey of Ailsa Craig paid $23,000 for J.R.
George a brown son of J.R. Skipper and $5,200 for Ferric's
Image.
Veteran Grand Bend owner and breeder Eric Mcllroy
purchased Armbro Unica for $23,000. Five other yearlings
went to Grand Bend, this time to Wheeling By Stables. They
are Peter Joe, Grayfriar's Jason, Shelley's Judge, Sweet
Impression and El Lordon for a total of 39,500.
The only Exeter purchaser was Ron Mason who bought
K.F. Colleen for $1,300. Other Lucan area buyers were
Gerry Van Bussell, Ken Hardy, Lyle Revington and Frank
Hardy.
During the two day yearling sales, a total of 394 horses
were sold for an average price of $5,139,34.
At the blooded horse sale, Dave Morrissey purchased
three animals. They were Marsha the Raven for $15,000 and
Flying Stuff and Robra Lisa for $4,000 and $3,500, respec-

In Friday's loss to London by a
score of 11-2, the Jets were in
contention for a good part of the
game as they led 1-0 at the end of
the first period, but fell behind 5-2
after 40 minutes of play.
Jets manager Don Urbshott
commented on Friday's loss, "It
was very simple. We just quit
skating and you can't do that
against London and. expect to
win."
Brian Spurr hit the mark for
the Jets on a pass from Randy
Gilfillan for the only score of the
first period at 17:56.
Gerald Wiedo completed the L-
I scoring at 14:56 of the middle
frame on a three-way com-
bination with Ed Robb and Ron
Funston.
Gary Ferra and Bruce Reddick
led the London scoring attack
with two successful shots apiece
while Randy English, Al John-
ston, Bill Robbins, Bob Marr,

Randy English of the Kings and
the Jets' Joe O'Rourke were each
banished from the game for being
the aggressor in a fight. Gerry
Gryp of the Kings had the "book
thrown" at him by referee Ken
Werboweski. He was assessed a
minor, major, game misconduct
and Match penalty. The last
infraction' was called for pulling
hair.
