Council debates revitalization
Want business in
Times-Advocate, August 4, 1977
Page 1$
Revitalization of Grand Bend's
core business area will be up to
the Grand Bend Chamber of
Commerce following the regular
council meeting Tuesday.
Council recommended that
Butch Windsor, representative of
Municipal Planning Consultants,
Toronto, contact the Chamber of
Commerce executive before
coming to council to present
plans for revitalization of the
Grand Bend business district.
"I think that anything to do
with the business section must
come from the business people",
said councillor Bob Simpson.
Reeve Bob Sharen said a
revitalization program should be
preceded by a business im-
provement program which,
according to section 361 of the
Ontario Municipal Act, must be
initiated by the local Chamber of
Commerce.
Only businessmen within the
improvement area would have to
pay for the program, said
Sharen, The Chamber must
initiate the business im-
provement section through
petition before council becomes
involved, he said.
Sharen suggested that council
go ahead with a market study
before adopting any
revitalization program to allow
boundary readjustment and to
promote the Grand Bend area to
incoming businesses.
"We approved the need for one
one thing that we're not getting
already", said councillor Bob
Simpson. "How important is a
revitalization program to us at
this time when we don't have the
sewers and accomoda lions to suit'
what we might draw now?"
The sewers are a life-line and
without them we're nothing",
said Simpson.
