The Crediton Mets pulled a Major upset, Monday, when they posted a 5-3 win over the Dash- wood Tigers in the first game of their best-of-three Huron Perth playoff. It was the first time the Mets had won over the Tigers this season. In fact., they hadn't even come close before. However, Jim Pfaff pitched a superlative game for the winners as he held the Tiger batters to a total of five hits, striking out seven over the nine Innings, West Williams, on home ground, scrambled up to a 2-2 draw. with Exeter Centennials Sunday in Ausable district. soc-' • Mudges sponsor bike race event Geo. The fun begins on Saturday night with a cornroast, hayride & dance and the qualifying heats starling at 11:00 A.M. Sunday Morning. Top spot is popular place The Exeter lawn bowlers enjoyed two outings this week, and competition was extremely close. In Saturday's jitney, three members ended up tied for first place with two wins and an aggregate of 22. They were Anna Ballantyne, Cam Chapman and Laverne Skinner. Following in order, also with EXETER 235.1640 two wins but lower aggregates, LONDON 227-4191 were Olive Harvey, Garnet Huron County's Largest Ford Dealer Hicks, Lowrance Wein, Lillian Pym and Leone Brock. Tuesday night also saw a tie for top spot between Bill Rogerson Tree of those strikeouts came in the final inning as he out off a potential rally by the Tigers after they got two men on base. Steve Bedour started things off for the Mets on their home field as he doubled off starter Perry Stover to lead off the first inning, .An error and a sacrifice fly from the bat of Jeff O'Brien sent I3edour across the plate. They added another single tally in the second when Peter Glover circled the paths after hitting a single. cer. Their kick-and-chase brand or football, truly unusual for West Williams, who won the A-division trophy' at mid-season, proved good, enough for a pair of late- game goals. Centre Matt Muller collected Exeter's first goal early in the opening half by tapping home a pass from right-winger Al Heim, Then Hern scored what seemed the Centennials' insurance goal with a hard cross-over shot in the second half of a ' game that otherwise had little definable shape as soccer. West Williams generally at- tacked with inter-changing front -runners moving onto long-hit balls, and the Centennials spent the afternoon adjusting defen- sively and working to control the play. The locals succeeded too, until about the last fifteen minutes when Steve Hemmings and Bill Knapp of West Williams each got goals from partially deflected shots with their team playing everyone up. Worse than a draw after a 2-0 lead, however, was that the Centennials, already hobbled by injuries, may have lost right centre-hack Tony Markus for the next couple of games. Markus, playing superbly with a badly bruised left leg, had the leg re- injured late in Sunday's match, and had to be taken from the field. The Centennials play their next two games at home, This coming Sunday they meet Taxandria, and on Sunday, August 14, they host Forest. Both games are at 2 p.m., at Canner's Field. and Laverne Skinner. Each had two wins and an aggregate of 24, Following in order were Lillian Pym, Alvin Pym and Wilfred Shapton. The big rally for the Mets came in the bottom of the sixth when they plated three runs. Jeff O'Brien took a base on balls and Percy Bedard was hit be reliever Jim Guenther. Bill Hodge then cracked a single to left field and an attempt to nip O'Brien at the plate was too late and hurler Guenther then uncorked a wild toss to second in an attempt to get Hodge and the latter crossed the plate behind Bedard as the ball rolled into centre field. The Mets picked up only three hits in the game, but made them all count, Dashwood scored both their runs in the seventh inning on a single by Rick Schilbe and a home run by Brad Gregus. T-A ball squad posts two Wins The T-A managed the only double wins in the Exeter recreation softball loop, posting a 15-12 win over Hensel! and a 10.8 margin over the Rookies. Both those teams rebounded with victories to gain a split in the recent play. The Rookies nipped Usborne by a 4-3 margin and Hensel! outscored the Crescent Rolls by 7-6. Hensel' have sole possession of first place with 25 points, followed by the 22 earned by the Rolls, Gord's have third place with 19 points, one more than the Rookies. The T-A jumped into fifth with 15 points, one more than Usborne, while Northlander and DIL follow up' with 10 and five points respectively. Two golfers pot aces at courses Two area golfers recorded dream shots this week when they posted hole-in-one scores. Jim Sweitzer, RR 2, Dashwood, accomplished his ace on Sunday afternoon while playing the 145- yard fourth hole at the Exeter Goll' Course. He used a seven iron while playing in a two-ball foursome with his wife, Marg, and Bill and Carol Hoffman. Also witnessing the shot were Roy and Marilyn Comfort of Welland. South Huron District High School teacher Terry O'Rourke posted an ace on the 10th hole at Oakwood Golf 'Course last week, He was playing with Dave Holtmann of Exeter at the time. Schilbe had one other hit for the Tigers and also hitting safely were John Hayter and Rob. Dickey. Perry Stover worked the first three innings for the Tigers and was followed on the mound for the next three by Guenther.
