GOOD CONSTRUCTION James Murphy, Artistic Director for the Playhouse will direct the six actors in the Neil Simon comedy which will open the 1977 Festival of Summer Theatre on Tuesday, July 5. Sailsurfing may come to Grand Bend this year if council is convinced after a Thursday night demonstration it offers no safety hazard to swimmers or sun- bathers, Don Sylvester attended Mondays regular council meeting to describe the sailsurfing "Windglider" to council mem- bers and get their permission to set up a school for instruction and the offering of the Windgliders for rent, "We would not rent to anyone who does not first go through our six hours of instruction so they are competent in the use of the' gliders" stated Mr. Sylvester. "If anyone refused to heed our warnings about keeping away from the swimming area we would simply refuse to rent to them again." The cost of the instruction would be $45, Mr. Sylvester proposed bringing ten of the Windgliders into Grand Bend, four for in- struction purposes and six for renting. The Windgliders resemble an enlarged surf-board with a mast attached by a universal joint. "If someone is in trouble, or they are headed straight for someone or something and don't feel they can turn in time they simply let go of the operating lever and the sail drops into the water, The forward propulsion is stopped and the mast dragging in the water acts as an anchor, The result is the surfer stops dead," said Mr. Sylvester. According to Mr. Sylvester Bonnie Westlake was the there have been no 'reported accidents of surfgliders being 4- leading batter 'with four singleS , and a walk in her five at bats fora hurt the system is so safe. Singles were hit by Pam Johnson and Bonnie Westlake, The Byron girls hit safely seven times with well placed bunts accounting for at least three of the hits. Grand Bend council rescinded the first two readings of a by-law which would have changed the mandatory closing hour in the village from 2:30a an, to 1 : 3(1 a.m. at its regular Meeting Monday night, Only one businessman in the village attended the meeting to address council on the matter and he was opposed to the closing hour. "My business is not in the downtown area and I depend on the night crowd to make a good deal of my money during the summer months. Closing me down at 1:30 a.m. would seriously harm that business," Council reflected on the matter and realized they had perhaps given too little consideration to Rescind two readings on closing hour bylaw GRADUATE PILOT — Robert West, son of Mrs. Helen West, Grand Bend graduated recently from Aero Academy, London with a commercial pilot licence and multi engine rating. "Where are we going to stop spending money?" he asked. Property committee chairman Barb Bell said the painting was included in this year's budget, Fellow committee member Lossy Fuller also noted that if the building needed painting, it should be done before it deteriorates further. While other members agreed with that contention, they did not use the same reasoning do the subject Of painting the local library. TenderS had been requested, but it was decided to delay the painting because considerable money has already been spent fixing the library roof this year, I Con For Professional LAND CLEARING Bulldozing & Heavy Equipment Rentals WESLAYNE Compony'Lttl, 294.4933 Parkhill, Ont. businesses not in the downtown area where the early morning problems are occurring. After some discussion council agreed to rescind the first two by- law readings as they felt to en- force the earlier closing hour would be penalizing the business people of the village for a problem which is being caused by someone else, However, council passed a motion requesting the clerk to immediately establish a meeting with a representative of the Liquor Licensing Board of Ontario in Toronto to discuss the "serious problems arising from certain licensed premises in the village." The closing hour will remain at 2:30 a.m, maybe only chance of running into trouble is if the sui*glider is buzzed by a power boat, One of the problems council sees with the proposal would be the landing and taking off of the Windgliders from the heavily used main beach in front of the casino, However, Mr, Sylvester assured council the surfers do not actually land or leave directly from the beach on the gliders. "You carry the board and mast into the water, connect the mast and then drag the glider into chest deep water before moun- ting. Even if a swimmer popped up right in front of you while on the glider, the surfer can turn so quickly there would be no collision," The Windgliders would be stored in the casino property, hence the use of the main beach for the surfgliding. Council decided to reserve judgement on the Windgliding until they have seen for them- selves exactly what is involved.
