Grand Bend council decided
Monday night to stick with the 25
mile per hour limit in the village
when they switch speed limit
signs to their metric equivalent
this fall.
Council had previously discuss-
ed the feasibility of switching to
30 miles per hour but decided
against it when they discovered
the new signs would cost the
same regardless of the speed
limit. However, council' did • decide to eliminate a good
number of the signs thus cutting
the cost of switching to metric by
about half.

Wayne Moody and Bill

to explain to council their
patrons have problems finding
parking spaces especially on
weekends due to the large areas
of parking space taken up by boat
trailers.
While council refused to lease
any land to them, they did decide
to erect three signs in an area on
the south side of River Rd. say-
ing, "Parking, Cars Only" and
three more on the north side say-
ing "Angle Parking Only". They
will also request the yacht club
members use the yacht club
parking rather than parallel
parking on the road side.

Hedges are an attractive and
economical alternative to
traditional fences. says R. F.
Gomme, Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food hor-
ticulturist.
Low-grown hedges are ideal for
bordering a garden, medium-
sized hedges are best used for
separating different parts of the
garden and tall hedges can be
used as screens for privacy.
For trimmed hedges consider
privet, alpine currant,
cotoneas ter , boxwood or
evergreens such as Japanese
yew, white cedar, hemlock or
spruce. For natural growing
hedges select spirea, lilac, for-
sythia, honeysuckle or shrub
roses.
The higher the hedge desired,
the farther apart each plant
should be spaced. Mr. Gomme
suggests planting hedges about
one foot apart if they are to
mature at one to two feet in
height. Hedges to mature at three
to five feet can be spaced 15 to 20
inches apart and taller hedges
should be planted 30 inches apart.
It is not necessary to buy the
largest plants, says Mr. Gomme,
but the bigger the root system,
the better,
To plant, the hedge, dig a
straight trench at least 18 inches
deep, keeping the topsoil
separate from the subsoil. The
trench should be wider and
deeper than the size of the root
system.
Set each plant in a straight row,
about two inches deeper than at
the nursery, Fill in with topsoil
mixed with peat moss. Firm the
soil around each plant.
Mr. Gomme suggests using a
line to prune at least one-third of
the top growth. If this is not done,
hedges will be thick at the top and
sparse at the base.
Fertilize along each side with
balanced fertilizer such as 7-7-7
at about one pound for every 15
feet of hedge. Water frequently
until the plants are established.

Council received a notice from
the Ministry of Culture and
Recreation paying they have
been refused a grant to pay the
cost of hiring an additional
lifeguard for the summer patrol.
Interviewing for the lifeguard
positions available went on all
weekend and the lifeguards will
be officially hired in the near
future,
Council received a request for
severence of an L-shaped lot in
Plan 24 at the corner of Oak and
Hill streets, Since the required
size of lots in Plan 24 is 3200 sq.
ft, and the severed lots would
measure at least that large,
council indicated they have no
objections.
Council is tendering 12,000 sq.
ft. of parking area along the park
area east of Hwy. 21. This will
still leave ample parking space
for anyone ,wishing to use the
park. The tenders must be in by
May 16, but the lot will not be
available for such things as a car
lot, or boat trailer storage or
anything which might be an
eyesore for visitors entering the
village.
Dave Desjardine was ap-
pointed by council to the recrea-
tion committee.
Dick and John Manore attend-
ed the council meeting to
register their objections to any
type of boat lift being erected in
the areas discussed as possible
by council at its last meeting two
weeks ago.
Dick Manore stated the areas
mentioned are not suitable as the
parking problem along River Rd.
is already a serious one, the
hydro lines are only 15 feet high
and the lift discussed by council
was 18 feet high and the dimen-
sions mentioned by council were
not complete.
Mr. Manore added such a
structure would have to be well
supervised and should be fenced
in as well to avoid accidents. He
said council is talking about an
investment of close to $25,000
and at the present time Mr.
Manore stated he felt there was
no need for such a structure.
Mr. Manore did add he thought
such a lift might be needed in the
not too distant future but it
should be 'built farther up the
river and angled so as not to in-
terfere with the river flow in any
way. There should also be ample
parking facilities available.

Miss Jarvis was soon sending
thousands of letters to influential

state-wide and then, nine years after
her mother's death, in 1914, the Uni-

al Mother's Day. And today, most of
the western countries celebrate this
holiday honouring all mothers.

HOW IT ALL STARTED
Everybody knows that Mother's Day is a day set aside to honour all
mothers — but our research department did some digging and found out
just how` it all started. It seems that the mother of a Miss Anna Jarvis died
May 9, 1905; and on the anniversary of her mother's death, Miss Jarvis star-
ted holding an informal memorial meeting of friends.
LET'S MAKE A DEAL.
If the idea of Mother's Day is
to honour mom • to give her the day
off — then we have to make sure that
she GETS the day off. So let's make
a deal . . You do the dusting and
sweeping for mom today, you make
the beds and tidy up, and do most of the other little things she has to do
EACH day — and WE'LL do the cooking. How's that? Just say, "No cooking
today, moml I'm off to Dixie Leel" (And you know something? You won't
have to do the dishes either.)
Yours in good taste,
only been considering such a lift
and obviously had not realized all
the implications. He said no site
had been decided on and those
mentioned were only
suggestions. Council would have
to look into the matter further
before making any decisions.
Council decided to buy $600
worth of 2 by 6 to continue with
repairs to the town docks. It is
possible more money will be
available for this, but as there
was a slight error in the budget,
the exact amount is not settled.
