Four Of Exeter's minor hockey
teams started on the OMHA
playoff trail this week and it
came to an abrupt halt for two of
them. ,
The pee wee and bantam teams
were ousted in three straight
games by their counterparts in
St. Marys and will now move
back into Shamrock league
playoffs.
Exeter.1s midgets managed to
turn the tables in their series as
they ousted St. Marys in three
straight and the atom teams from
the two rival towns are currently
tied in their best-of-five en-
counter.
The local pee wee and bantam 2
teams won't be seeing OMHA
action fora couple of weeks. They
had been scheduled to meet
Lambeth in the first round, but

nament on Saturday,
The next opponents for the
Kinsmen midgets will be New
Hamburg, who receive a bye into
the second round. First game
will be played in Huron Park this
Sunday at 6:00 p.m.
Atoms exciting
If the OMHA atom series
between Exeter and St. Marys
remains as close and exciting as
the first two games, everyone
involved will be a nervous wreck
before the winner of the best-of-
five is declared.
In the opening tilt at Huron
Park, Sunday, St. Marys scored
in the middle frame and then held
on to post a 1-0 win. Exeter
missed several opportunities to
score the equalizer in the hard-
hitting contest, while St. Marys
also had chances to get a clincher
and missed.
Dave Rook in the Exeter nets
and his St. Marys counterpart,
Steve Shaw, also played out-
standing games and turned aside
several shots that could have
changed the outcome.
Back in Embro, Monday,
Exeter jumped into a 4-0 leactand
just as the fans were starting to
settle back to enjoy the apparent
one-sided victory, St. Marys
came back with four tallies of
their own to send the. game into
overtime. They scored the
equalizer with nine seconds
remaining and their goalie.on the
bench in favour of an extra
forward,
However, Exeter rebounded in
overtime as Steve Laithwaite
batted in a puck to give Exeter a
5-4 win and knot the series at one
game each. The teams play again
in Embro Saturday and back in
Huron Park at 5:00 p.m. on

L-1 Jets
-- Continued from Page 10
the Jets in the opening frame was
fired by Bill Bannerman. Helping
with assists were Bill White and
Doug Galloway.
In the middle session Rick
Martin and Bill Bannerman each
triggered their second goals of
the night and Ed Parkinson
registered on passes from Rick
Martin and Barry Baynham.
Parkinson and Baynham
provided the assists for Martin
and Bill White and Ken McCut-
cheon helped Bannerman to find
the scoring range.
The only Port Stanley second
period score came from Willy
Konost while Bill White of the
Jets was resting in the penalty
box.
In the third period each team
was able to score three times. Ed
Parkinson scored twice to
complete his hat trick and Ed
Robb notched a single. Randy
Roth assisted on both Parkinson
markers and Rick Martin helped
on one, Jamie Robb and Jacques
Cousineau were the assisters on
Ed Robb's score.
The final three Port Stanley
goals were fired by Dave
Duquette, Pat Byrne and Scott
Mc Tagg ar t.
John Robertson was in goal for
the Jets and faced 32 shots while
the Jets blasted 54 atMac Stewart
and Tom O'Flaherty who shared
goaling duties for the Dynamites.
Scott Lovie started Exeter off
on the right foot in Monday's tilt
when he scored from Laithwaite
and Brent Dawson,
Laithwaite then upped the lead
to 2.0 with the help of Lovie and
Doug Scott and near the middle of
the second frame Steve Batten
fired two successful shots in less
than a minute to get the 4-0
margin.
He fired his first tally after
George Pratt flipped him the
puck off the face-off and his
second marker came when he
stole the puck at the St. Marys
blueline and raced in all alone to
hit the top corner.
St. Marys whittled the count to
4-2 before the end of the second
period and scored two'in the final
three minutes to set up the ex-
citing overtime battle..
Midgets advance
The Exeter Kinsmen midgets
came up with three well-balanced
efforts to send St. Marys to the
sidelines in straight games in the
first round of the OMHA playoffs.
The powerful local crew opened
the series with a 6-2 win in Huron
Park and then beat St. Marys on
their home ice at Embro on
Saturday and Monday by scores
of 3-1 and 8-0.
In all three contests, Exeter
outplayed their opponents on both
offence and defence and Roger
O'Brien was equal to the task on
most occasions when St. Marys
did get scoring opportunities.
In the opener, Exeter gave
some early indication of their
strength when they scored their
first two tallies while playing
short-handed. Paul Pooley
notched the first on a pass from ,
Randy Parsons and the latter
replied with the second goal with
help from Pooley.
St. Marys evened the count
before the period ended, their
first coming on a short-handed
effort and the second on a power,
play.
The locals opened a 4-2 lead in
the second on goals by Paul
Pooley and Dave Bogart, while
Perry Pooley and Preston
Dearing blinked the light in the
third,
In Embro, Saturday, the teams
played scoreless hockey into the
second frame before Randy
Fisher scored on an unassisted
effort and came back with his
second goal of the night on a play
with Paul Pooley and Bogart.
St. Marys fans were up
cheering in the third when Jamie
Dunbar scored at the 8:42 mark-
to get them back in their contest,
but they soon had the smiles
wipped off their faces as Dave
Bogart scored on a playwith Paul
Pooley seven seconds later to
rebuild the margin.
Monday night's contest was
hard fought for the first period as
St. Marys tried to extend the
series and the teams played
without a goal.
However, Exeter jumped into a
quick lead in the second on a goal
by Brad Taylor and they soon
took complete control of the
contest with two more tallies in
the second and five in the third.
Perry Pooley paced the attack
with three goals, while Taylor
added his second, singles came
off the sticks of Paul Pooley,Dave
Bogart and Brian Mercer.
Roger O'Brien and his defence
completely thwarted the St.
Marys attack to post the shutout.
Bantams ousted
For the first time in several
years, the Exeter Bantams have
ended up on the sidelines after
only the first round of OMHA
playoffs.
The locals started off with a 6.3
loss to St. Marys in Friday's
opener and in the final two games
ran out of steam in the final
period to end up on the short end
of 4-1 and 6-2 margins.
St. Marys opened up a 2-0 lead
in the first period of Friday's
contest and then came back with
OHA Sr.
Continental
two more after David L. Bell had
scored Exeter's only tally of the
initial frame on a passing play
with Wayne Parsons and Steve
Pearce.
The 4-1 margin held throughout
a scoreless second period, and
the teams traded two goals each
in the final. 15 minutes. Exeter
scorers were Wayne Parsons
and Jeff Fuller, while picking up
assists on the two scores were
John Stephens, Doug Brooks and
Dave Jackson.
Saturday night's contest in
Embro was a fast-paced, exciting
tilt for the first two periods when
the score ended up 1-1. Exeter
scored on a solo dash by Doug
Brooks in the first period and St.
Marys tied it up late in the
second.
However, after the rest period,
St. Marys came roaring out and
scored three goals to cap their
second win.
Sunday's contest back in Huron
Park was a similar situation.
Exeter scored first on a solo
effort by Jeff Fuller in the
opening period and St. Mary's
knotted the count in the second.
After the break, the teams
traded early goals and then St.
Mary's ran away with the contest
with four goals in the final six and
a half minutes. Wayne Parsons
scored Exeter's second goal with
passing help from Doug Brooks.
Pee wees out
The Exeter pee wees were
ousted from further OMHA play
in three straight games by a
hard-checking St. Marys crew
who posted wins of 7-3, 2-1 and 6-3
in the weekend action.
The locals showed the effects of
a two-week layoff in Friday's
home opener at Huron Park as
they were badly disorganized and
ran out of steam in the last two
periods.
They took a 1-0 lead after only
45 seconds when a puck deflected
in off a St. Marys defender. John
Kernick was given credit for the
tally with the assist going to Scott
Pincombe.
St. Marys rebounded for two
goals in the next two minutes and
Exeter knotted the count on a
tally from the stick of Mark
Vandergunst. Dave Underwood
and Mike Clark drew the assists.
The visitors came right back to
take a 3-2 lead after the first and
then scored the only goal of the
second period to increase their
margin to two. The teams traded
goals early in the third and St,
Marys wrapped up the victory
with two late tall'')s. Mike
Murray scored Exeter's final
tally with the help of Steve
Riddell.
Playing in Embro, Saturday,
the locals held their own
throughout the close contest and
just missed the equalizer on
several occasions in the 2-1 loss.
Both ogoaltenders came up with
several key saves in the contest.
St. Marys drew first blood with
a power play tally at the 2:17
mark of the first period and it
stayed that way until early in the
second when Scott Batten knotted
the count when he flipped a
rebound into the top corner. Mike
Murray drew the assist.
The winner came at the 5:12
mark of the middle frame and the
teams battled the final 20 minutes
of the game on even terms with
Peter Dearing and Rob
Baatolacci kicking out
everything shot at them.
