Hawks season ends Tuesday,
continue in first place tie
If the weatherman co-operates and don't bet your life
savings on it the next couple of weeks will be very busy in
this area as many of the recently postponed events are
rescheduled.
The annual Winter Carnival at South Huron District
High School has been set to begin on Friday of this week and
run through the weekend.
Student council president Phil Knight and his cohorts
have lined up a long and interesting agenda to allow
students and visitors to participate and watch events in-
doors and outside.
One event this year will take on a slightly different
form. That's the usual broomball game between the
teaching staff and grade 13 students. Without the facilities
of the Exeter arena, the game will be played in the high
school gym and will be a combination of broomball and
floor hockey.
The Saturday events will include the usual pie eating,
bubble gum blowing and cake baking contests. Added is a
test where contestants will be required to eat a number of
crackers and then attempt to blow up balloons.
Snowarama set back, too
The already twice postponed Whipper Billy Watson
Snowarama for crippled children has been now scheduled
for Sunday, February 27.
This is one of 18 similar events throughout the province
when snowmobilers will travel a designated course of about
100 miles. The London and district route will begin and end
at Hully Gully near Varna and will cover much of South
Huron and dip into parts of Middlesex and Perth.
Area Lions clubs are participating in the Snowarama by
providing personnel at the various checkpoints along the
way. Stops in this area are at Jack Riddell's farm, just east
of Dashwood, Mount Carmel, Ailsa Craig, the Lucan
Conservation area, Kirkton, Kippen and the Pineridge
Chalet.
All proceeds go to aid crippled children work
throughout the province. Anyone wishing to take part as a
contestant or to donate monies as a pledge are asked to con-
tact Randy Collins at Hully Gully at 262-5809.
More help for crippled kids
The eighth annual Crippled Kids weekend at the
Pineridge Chalet is set for the weekend of February 18, 19
and 20. George and Lucille Beer and Don and Shirley
Mousseau have again lined up an interesting and fun packed
weekend for persons of all ages.
The three day event begins on the Friday night with a
dance featuring Joe Overholt and the Standbys. Saturday
will feature a snowmobile poker rally and free snowmobile
rides for the children.
Sunday will be the big day with a pancake breakfast
continuing from 8:30 a.m. to the noon hour. Heading the list
of celebrity chefs will be Bill Brady of CFPL in London and
Ralph Duffus of the London Crippled Children's Treatment
Centre.
For several years now Brady and Duffus have been vy-
ing for best pancake making honours and their good natured
quips will add to the fun.
An added attraction this year will be the appearance of
Big Al from CKCO television in Kitchener. Big Al will be on
hand to meet the many children expected to attend.
Another poker rally will be held Sunday afternoon and
free snowmobile rides will again be available for the
youngsters.
In the chalet clubhouse Sunday afternoon an excellent
array of talent has been lined up. These include Joe
Overholt, The Little People, Gerald Davidson, The Bradley
Bunch and a number of step dancers.
Gerald Davidson was the champion Canadian open
country singer in 1975 and 1976.
Mooseburgers will be on sale all weekend. Admission is
only one dollar or possession of a crippled children's button.
Fun at Kirkton
This coming weekend the annual Kirkton-Woodham
Winter carnival will be staged. The fun all begins Friday
night at the K-W Community centre with the selection of a
carnival queen.
Saturday a safety contest and Sunday afternoon a full
list of snowmobile races will be held.
Conservation pledge
The annual meeting of the Ontario Federation of
Anglers and Hunters will be held at the Inn-On-The-Park in
Toronto from Febraury 17 to 20.
From the agenda it appears as if the convention should
be very interesting with topnotch speakers on firearms
legislation, environment and natural resources.
The letterheads of the Ontario Federation of Anglers
and Hunters carry a very interesting pledge at the bottom
of the page. It goes as follows:
"I give my pledge as a Canadian to save and faithfully
defend from waste the natural resources of my country —
its soils and its minerals, its waters, forests and wildlife."
Top defenceman
It was interesting to read in a recent issue of the Lon-
don Free Press some suggested awards by hockey writer
Dave Langford for the leagues he covers in Western On-
tario.
Langford listed Jack Chipchase of the Lucan-Ilderton
Jets as the best defenceman. Chipchase is in his first year
with the Jets following a lengthy professional career mostly
with Roanoke Valley of the Southern league.
TV Program Of Interest
Tonight, Thursday a program of interest to local sports
fans will be shown on CKNX Channel 8 Winghanri.

ittilit4klireetor Ron Bogart.

attend a sports seminar. The program is hosted by Jim
Swann and begins at 6:30 p.m.
