Granton shed destroyed; -UCW groups stage. meetings

The Granton fire department
was called to extinguish a fire on
the farm of Charles (Chum)
Hayden on Concession 10 of
Blanshard Township Friday
afternoon.
The fire started in a shed, and
thanks to neighbors who turned in
the alarm did not spread to any
other buildings. The owners were
not at home at the time.
U.C.W. meet
Unit 1 of the Granton UCW met
at the home of Mrs. Glen
Jameson Wednesday afternoon
with Miss Mabel McNaughton
presiding
During the business session,
projects for the coming year
were discussed. Program con-
veners were Mrs.. Austin Hobbs
and Mrs. Elmer Summers. Mrs.
Hobbs gave several readings
from the 1977 Fireside and
Friendship books.
Mrs. Summers presented a
paper on the third chapter of the
Study Book "Justice not
Charity", this asked the question
what does development mean?
and dealt with the developing
Third and Fourth Worlds.
The search for new models of
development will prove fruitless
unless we take into account
universal principles such as
social Justice and the common
good says the author Douglas
Roche, this program provoked a
good discussion.
Unit 3
Mrs. Garfield Nixon was the
hostess for Unit 3 Tuesday
evening. Mrs. Doug Brown
presided
For the program Mrs. Michael
O'Shea showed pictures of her
trip with representatives from
the Department of Agriculture,
when they toured the British Isles
attending prominent Agricultural
events there such as Livestock
Shows, etc.
A short worship service was
conducted by conveners Mrs.
John Drost and Mrs. Robt.
Garrett. Among items of business
discussed was the decision to hold
a Bazaar again this year and to
provide the material to paint the
Church basement.
Unit 4
Unit 4 met at the home of Mrs.
Kenneth Hardie Wednesday
evening. Mrs. Nelson Tate
presided and opened the meeting
with the hymn "0 God our help in
ages past" followed by the
meditation on Thoughts for the
New Year. The roll call was the
payment of fees.
The program was in charge of
Mrs.- Terry Johnson and- Mrs.,
Stanley Crawford, Mrs. Johnson
took the study from the book
Justice not Charity. This dealt
with the development of the Third
and Fourth Worlds a good
discussion resulted from the title
"What does development mean?
Mrs. Crawford gave a reading,
entitled New Year's Resolutions,
Unit 5
Miss Verneta Baker was the
hostess for Unit 5 Wednesday
evening. Mrs. Chas. McRobert
presided and opened the meeting
with Lesson Thoughts pertaining
to the New Year. Projects were
discussed for the coming year.
Mrs. Wm. Jones and Mrs. John
Bryan were in charge of the
program.
Mrs Jones presented a paper
dealing with the third chapter of
the Study Book, "Justice not
Charity". This was devoted to the
development of the Third and
Fourth Worlds. This was followed
by a good discussion. Mrs, Bryan
read a poem "I am the Calendar"'
and Mrs. Jones gave a reading

Rev. Mary A. Mills conducted
the morning service at St.
Thomas Anglican Church on
Sunday, January 9, her sermon
was taken from the gospel of St.
Luke, Chapt. 2, beginning at
verse 41, it being the first Sunday
after Epiphany and the Gospel of
the day,
Rev. Mills announced an ef-
fective Leadership course to be
held on Tuesaday evening at
Fanshawe College, starting
January 18 at 7:30 p.m. and also a
Wednesday evening course on
Modern Philosophic Movements.
At the United Church Rev.
Elwood Morden was in charge of
the morning worship and of-
ficiated at the service of Holy
Communion and entitled the
Meditation "What the Com-
munion Service moans". It
means said Rev. Morden, the
central act of worship by the
Christian Church within touching
distance of God.
The symbols, bread and wine,
representing the Body and Blood
of Christ, through these symbols,
God comes very close to us at the
Lord's table, it is here we meet on
common ground. In this service
of remembrance and
Thanksgiving and dedication.

first meeting of the year 1977.
