SHEILA TIEDEMAN A combined team of Grand Bend and Zurich Atoms had mixed results this week when they competed in the Brussels Atom Tournament as staged March 24 in Brussels. It was the third year for the tournament. The GB-Zurich team lost their first game 4-2 to Palmerston but came back to win the second test, 5-3 over Kingsville. Steve Miller of Palmerston opened the scoring in the second frame of the first game and then found the mark again to give them a 2-0 lead with an unassisted effort. Grand Bend got on the scoreboard with just 14 seconds left in the period when Richard Brown-and Paul.Johnston set up Dean' Courtney for their first goal. Miller completed his hat trick early in the third period with the eventual winner, on a set up from Gurney. Johnston came back to narrow the gap for GB-Zurich, from Courtney but they ran out of time as Bob Drost, from Miller put the insurance into the net for Palmerston. His article reflects the spirit of the Old Timers game played Saturday night. By TOM CREECH The Exeter Oldtimers and Team CFPL captured an element of the game of hockey that has been lacking over the past few years: fun. Before a large crowd at the Huron Park Arena the two teams battled to 6-6 tie Saturday. The game featured some outstanding skating and puck handling by the teams and game officials. In a performance that could only be matched by his activities in the council chambers, Reeve Derry Boyle put on a masterful display of how the game of hockey should be played. It was Boyle's tactics that dumbfounded Team CFPL. Boyle's mode of dress completely decelmed „his ‘hig ger „. and faster skating opponents. With the appearance of a reject from a used clothing store, Boyle was able to control the board effectively but was unable to get the puck out to some of his more fleet footed team mates such as Glen Robinson or Har Brintnell. Although the game was billed as a friendly contest, there were some moments when the parties forgot about the pretense that the was tripped and then pounced upon by two members of Team CFPL. The referees in an action copied from Victor Dombrowski turned their backs to this "brutal" incident. Yvonne Wells set up Kim Kennedy early in the first frame of the second game to put the Parkettes up 1-0 but the Lucan crew came back less than three minutes later when Mary Duenk converted Mary Jane Martins' pass to tie it up. With Kellman assuming the normal goaltending position, James had MacDonald stationed on the blueline in front of the net, This had the "net effect" of MacDonald touching the puck once while on his special assignment.
