In contrast to the general trend in the area, it was an- nounced that services at the South Huron Hospital in Exeter would increase. . . . About 75 persons attended a meeting regarding Exeter's proposed new recreation centre. It was reported that "battle lines were drawn" at the meeting, . . . Mr. and Mrs. James O'Connor of Clandeboye had quite a crowd for breakfast — "Breakfast With Brady" that is. About 60 persons visited the O'Connor home when the radio program was broadcast live. . It was announced that "Anne of Green Gables" would headline the summer season at the Huron Country Playhouse in Grand Bend. Mar. 4 . A severe ice storm which hit a large area of southwestern Ontario knocked out hydro and telephone service, downing wires and poles. . , . Dr. 11/I. C. Fletcher marked fifty years of medical service to the community, coming to Exeter in March 1926 on a temporary basis. . . Grand Bend council went on, record requesting a second ac- cess to the Southcott Pines subdivision. . . Parking, a problem in most communities, might be solved by a committee looking into im- provements in Grand Bend. A one hour limit for parking on the main street has been proposed. . . . Rent hikes at Huron Park have many residents there confused. The confusion came to light at a meeting regarding the Rent Review Board held in Exeter. March 11 • • Ron McIntosh of Ex-Cen Cable TV announced that 10 channels would become a reality for Exeter residents within one week. • The Exeter Centennial Soccer Club cancelled the teams pending trip to England pending approval of parents. . Linda Kadechuk began a survey to determine the interest and need for a co-operative nursery school in Exeter. March 18 . . Twenty-three head of cattle, valued at about $7,000, were stolen from the farm of Bob Down in Usborne township. ... Exeter's bill for clean up from the severe ice storm has been set at about $45,000, . , . Grand Bend councillor Bill Baird suggested interest on tax arrears be raised from one and a half percent per month to two percent per month. . . . Dave Silcock, coach of the Exeter squirt soccer team, resigned from his position. March 25 . . A group of residents of Stephen township expressed fears that the nature of the land will be spoiled if a subdivision in the township was allowed. The land was zoned agricultural. . . Another stop work ordered was issued by council against work on the Exeter town hall but again the Exeter Heritage Foundation ignored the order. . . . South Huron Hospital in Exeter received its budget guidelines from the province. A ten percent increase was allowed. . A new bus for use at the Adult Rehabilitation Centre was presented to the trainees by the Grand Bend Alhambras, April 1 . . . The Exeter PUC announced extra costs due to the March ice storm would reach $19,000. . . . A $285,000 well for 1976 was included in the five year ex- penditure budget approved by the PUC in Exeter. . A $500 reward was posted for '- information .regarding the theft,-, of 23 cattle beasts from the farm, of Bob Downs in Usborne township, • . Huron County Council an- nounced that there would be no increase in the county tax levy this year. April 8 Bell Aerospace of Grand Bend announced 20 more employees would be laid off leaving only 33 workers at the plant which for- merly employed 77. . . . J. F. Farm Machinery, an Exeter manufacturing firm,went into receivership. About 75 persons were employed at the plant, . „ After months of disagreement, indecision and frustration, town council and the citizens town hall committee came to an agreement, per- mitting the committee to take over ownership of the building. April 15 . . The Exeter Recreation, Arena and parks committee suggested it might have to cut the summer playground program to stay within budget, . . . The question of including an indoor swimming pool in the new South Huron Recreation Centre was the main topic of discussion in Exeter. Many felt the pool's inclusion would make the project more attractive to donors. . . . Grand Bend council slashed its recreation budget by almost a third prompting an admonition from councillor Harold Green who also serves on the recreation committee. April 22 t . . A tentative agreement was approved giving the Exeter Public Utilities Commission permission to draw water from a new well in Usborne township, The PUC must replenish the Ausable River downstream to maintain stream flow. . . . South Huron Recreation Centre chairman John Stephens criticized Exeter council for its actions regarding the area. He said if decisions had been made based on council's research, "We would have been shot right down". . . . Maple Leaf Mills of Exeter closed its doors possibly-for-WV" last time and shifted its seed division plant to Baden. April 29 .'. Dave Zyluk of Precious Blood Separate School was named principal of Kingsbridge Separate School north of Goderich. . . . Huron county's school tax rate took a jump of 28.7 percent. . , Ironwood Golf Course, on Exeter's east side, officially opened. .. A poor turnout was on hand to hear discussion on the future of the village of Hensall at a public meeting there. May 6 . . Thirty-two students and a school bus driver were injured when a bus left the road and struck a culvert near the Usborne Central School. None of the in- juries were serious although two persons were admitted to hospital. . . . Exeter developer Len Veri charged that Exeter council was discriminating against him in regard to impost fees on his new subdivision. Brian Taylor was voted most valuable player of the Exeter Hawks. He also received a trophy as the teams top scorer. . A very large crowd attended a testimonial dinner for Dr. M. C. Fletcher marking his fiftieth year as a doctor in Exeter. May 13 . J. F. Farm Machinery filed for bankruptcy and announced the Exeter plant would shut down throwing 75 employees out of work. . . , Kevin Short, formerly of Hanover, joined the Exeter Police force, . . Due to a Canada Council gr,ant being refused, Huron Country Playhouse at Grand Bend cut two plays from its 1976 plans. A 24.16 mill increase faced the taxpayers in Hensall following the village council budget meeting. Most of the increase is due to the education levy. May 20 . . . Mayor Bruce Shaw informed Exeter council to expect a mill rate increase of from nine to eleven mills this year. ... Murray Greene of The Exeter Public Utilities Commission was - elected president of the Ontario Municipal Water Association. . , , The Land Use Committee of Exeter council ruled that there was no discrimination against developer Len Veri in the impost charges levied. . , . Ted Butler opened Butler's Department Store, formerly Parker's, on Exeter's main street, May 27 ... Graham Mason was installed as president of the R. E. Pooley branch, Royal Canadian Legion. Noel Westlake was installed as Legion Auxiliary president. . . It was announced that the fund raising campaign for the new South Huron Recreation Centre would begin June 14. . . Grand Bend council will appeal its apportionment of the education levy set down by Lambton Board of Education. June 3 . . . Exeter PUC approved an engineers report recommending the development of the Morgan well in Usborne township. The Morgan well, the second PUC well in Usborne, was to cost $88,000 and could mean a 25 percent increase in water rates. . . The Exeter PUC also an- nounced a 6.7 percent increase in hydro rates to take effect in July, . . . Dr. Malcolm Fletcher of Exeter received a plaque from the Ontario government recognizing his 50 years of ser- vice as a medical practitioner in this area. . The Huron Country Playhouse received word that it would receive a $20,000 operating grant from the Ontario Arts Council. . . . The South Huron Recreation Centre Committee had finalized plans for a canvass of area businesses asking for donations to the arena fund. June 10 . . . Miss BrendaNeilwas crown- ed queen at the annual formal held at South Huron District High School. . . , A 47 page document was presented to the Exeter and District Heritage Foundation. It was a feasibility report on the restoration and use of the Exeter town hall. A tax rate of 13.5 percent was predicted for residents of Exeter. A large portion of the increase was due to higher requisitions from boards of education, up about four mills. . . The Ontario Police Com- mission termed office ac- commodation for the Exeter Police department as "deplorable". The commission stated that the facilities for the police were inadequate, poorly organized and do nothing for the morale of the officers, Hensall council agreed to take action to solve the problem of dust on the villages main street. The dust has resulted from the excavations in the installation of sewers. After receiving third and final reading from village council, the Grand Bend zoning bylaw will have its fate decided' by the Ontario Municipal Board. At least one appeal has been filed against the bylaw. June 17 . . Fourteen nurses from the Huron County Health Unit picketed South Huron Hospital as nurses across Ontario went on strike for one week. . . The sale of the Exeter Independent News and the Zurich Citizens News to J. W. Eedy Publications was announced. The firm also owned the Exeter Times-Advocate and the St. Marys Journal Argus, t . Brian Smillie of Smiling Acres, north, of Hensall, an- nounced he was syndicating his "Riva Ridge" colt to a group of investors for $250,000 at $25,000 per share. . . A public meeting in Grand Bend held to discuss the villages plans for the harbour area drew about 30 people. . . .
