church bells
peal the time
This is the time of year for
church bells pealing, but- that
happens in Exeter every day of
the year, thanks to Charles
Hendy Who is caretaker at Trivitt
Memorial Church.
When the town hall bell
was removed, Trivitt officials
offered their bell to chime out the
12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m. notice
for local residents, but that offer
was not taken up by council,
However, Mr. Hendy decided to
undertake the job on his own and
each day -- with the exception of
Sunday--town residents are still
given the time of day through the
benefit of the bells,
jute to the town staff for their
ssistance.
"I have to say we're going to
miss you," Councillor Ted Wright
said to Boyle. "You have con-
tributed to council and the town,"
He later said everyone who
leaves council is missed.
"It's a good experience for
everyone," Councillor Bob
Simpson said in his farewell, He
said he had enjoyed the work and
hoped his replacement would do
likewise.
Councillor Lossy Fuller said
she would miss some of the
familiar faces on council, noting
they had worked as a team for the
past two years.
However, she chided Simpson
by saying that she would be
pleased to have someone sitting
beside her other than the "cigar
man".
"I've enjoyed the past two
years and am looking forward to
the next year," councillor Barb
Bell said,
Garnet Hicks termed his two
years on council a "great ex-
perience" and said he had en-
joyed the friendships with fellow
council members.
He said councillors should be
better informed and suggested a
committee be set up to study all
the various grants and subsidies
available.
Hicks indicated he was also a
great exponent of conventions,
saying they provided op-
portunities for councillors to
learn how their counterparts
handled situations across the
province.
He envisioned some "very big
problems" for the new council
and advised them to get as well
informed as possible.
While noting that council work
was at times discouraging,
Harold Patterson said he enjoyed
the challenge when the work
became harder.
"It's a little shaking to come to
the end of the line," commented
Deputy-Reeve Tom MacMillan,
who leaves council this year. He
said he had enjoyed working with
council and the citizens of
Exeter,
"We still feel we belong to
Exeter," he said.
Mayor Bruce Shaw paid tribute
to the four retiring members,
saying they had given the town a
great deal,
He said Boyle had been a big
