The Lucan-Ilderton Jets gained
an even split in two games this
week with the league leading
London Kings in Ontario Hockey
Association Continental senior
play and remain three points
back in second spot.
At the London Gardens
Thursday night, the Kings scored
a 5-3 victory and Friday in
Ilderton the Jets rever.S'ed the
situation by winning 8-5, In a
Sunday contest also at Ilderton,
the Jets trounced the Port
Stanley Canadians 13-4.
While trailing the Kings by
three points, the Lucan-Ilderton
club has played two fewer games
than London and by winning both
could move into first place,
The Jets were in Port Stanley
last night Wednesday for a return
engagement with the Canadians
and will be at home at the
Ilderton arena Friday night at
8:15 p.m. when the Stratford
Perths will supply the opposition.
Lots of double scorers
Five members of the Jets went
on a scoring spree against Port
Stanley Sunday with two goals
apiece.
Firing two successful shots
were Ed Robb, Jack Chipchase,
Jacques Cousineau, Steve
Proctor and Randy Roth. Scoring
in single fashion were 'Jim Pin-
negar, Ed. Parkinson and Jamie
Robb.
Lorne Daer was in goal for the
Jets. He was able to shutout the
opposition in the first and third
periods.
Big second period
A six goal outburst in the
second period carried the Jets to
Friday's 8-5 victory over London.
The first period was scoreless
and Larry Russell of the Kings
counted at 1:04 of the second
frame before the Jets caught fire.
Jim Pinnegar knotted the count
as he took a pass directly from
the faceoff from Scott Graham at
7:14 and blasted a slap shot into
the London net.
Only 23 seconds later and the
Jets were ahead to stay on a
successful shot by Bill Ban-
nerman. He picked up a loose
puck in front of the London net
and beat Mike McIntyre. Scott
Graham and Ed Parkinson
assisted.
The next two L-I goals came in
another short space. On a power
play at 9:37 Jamie Robb
registered 4 with assists going to
Jacques Cousineau and Jack
Chipchase and 38 seconds later
the red light blinked on Ed
Parkinson's shot on a play
started by Scott Graham.
The Jets scored again at 17:43
on a similar combination.
Parkinson again pulled the
trigger with Graham and Jack
Chipchase providing the passes,
At 18:28 the Jets lead rose to 6-1
as veteran defenceman Doug
Galloway was in the right spot to
deflect a shot by Randy Roth into
the London net. Rick Fifield also
assisted,
The Kings bounced back
quickly in the third period and
scored four times by the 12:46
mark to cut the Jets lead to a
single goal.
Scoring for London were Jim
,,:,Walker ; Al Johnston, •Brian Hind
Viand Ken Pettit.
After the fifth London score,
Jets coach Don Urbshott
replaced goalie Rob Kellestine
with veteran Lorne Daer.
At 14:24 Rick Fifield slammed
in a rebound to put his team back
in front by two goals and only 12
seconds later defenceman Bill
Bourne tallied on passes from
Scott Graham and Ed Parkinson.

March 12, 1977, Plans are un-
derway for our Carnival. The
theme this year is "Happiness
Is..."
There is a difference between
speed skates, hockey skates and
figure skates.
The blades on speed skates are
long, thin and narrow and
because of their length, the skate
cannot be used for sharp turns or
spins.
The blades on hockey skates
are much shorter and also a little
wider, but still have two or three
inches of flat bottom along the ice
surface.
A figure skating blade is about
the same length as a hockey
blade, but about a third wider,
DOY0.1 KARVEY
W4ECTER WHO
IS }-4CTI' FOR
PERFORMANCE
Thereis a constant curve to the
edge of the blade, like a rocker of
a chair. This curve makes the
spins and turns possible, because
so little of the blade touches the
ice at one time. The toe-picks at
the front of the blade are used in
the various jumps.
Figure skates and hockey
skates are hollow ground; i.e. —
there is a slight hollow between
the edges of the blade. When
sharpening skates, the grinding
wheel must grind lengthwise, so
that the grooves in the metal will
be in the same direction as the
skate will moveon the ice,
Ice temperature can affect the
type of "grind". Hockey ice
ideally has a surface tem-
perature of about 16 deg. F. If the
ice is "hard" blades have to be
ground deeper.
Always wear skate guards
when off the ice. Concrete, wood,
nails and sand can dull the edge
of the blades and cause them to
slide over the ice rather than bite
into it.
Don't leave guards on skates
blades when you take your skates
off. The melting ice may rust the
blades.
Always dry the blades,
preferably with a chamois,
Always air skates out between
using. This prevents a damp or
musty odour from developing.
