Well done
Congratulations galore to the South Huron District High
School Panthers on winning the Huron-Perth Conference
senior football championship.
These congratulations to the Panthers should be a little
more than usual. They won the area high school football ti-
tle under more than ordinary circumstances and conditions.
The field conditions for not only Saturday's final but
Tuesday's semi-final game were far from ideal. After a few
plays it was almost impossible to see numbers on the
sweaters for all the mud.
In Saturday's game especially, the Panthers went with
a passing game which was very successful despite the
always slippery ball and treacherous footing,
On a slippery field, the passing team does have a bit of
advantage in that the would be receiver knows pretty well
where the ball will be thrown and the defenders have
problems in following the receivers.
The numerous passing by the Panthers seemed to catch
the Goderich defence off guard, They appeared to be look-
ing for more running plays.
Saturday's final at the local high school field drew a
large and enthusiastic crowd of spectators from both
Goderich and South Huron,
After coming close to the championship for the last cou-
ple of years Saturday's victory was very welcome to
coaches Ron Bogart and Glenn Mickle.
One problem not encountered this year by the South
Huron coaches was deciding on which players trying out for
the team would be cut.
All 33 players out to the first practices were signed up,
a good number of which were up from last year's junior
championship club.
Last year in the Conference final played in Stratford the
senior Panthers lost an early lead and were defeated by
Central Huron of Clinton. The year before they lost to the
same Goderich Vikings.
This was the first South Huron senior title since they
won back-to-back in 1967 and 1968. In 10 games played this
year the Panthers won all but one and that was upset loss to
Stratford Central.

Bowling jackpot increases
The jackpot on one of Western Ontario's most popular
sports participation sports shows continues to grow.
We are talking about Bowling For Dollars which is
shown each Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. on Channel 13,
CKCO in Kitchener.
The prize to go to the first contestant to throw three
consecutive strikes will be within a few dollars of five thou-
sand when the show takes to the air.this Saturday night.
,f,One of the entrants this, past Saturday night proved to
be a familiar face although he is a resident of Waterloo. He
is Ed Reist who makes several appearance's in this area
each year with the public address equipment at the Kirkton
Garden Party and the Exeter Fall Fair.
Ed who told master of ceremonies Bill Inkol that he
threw the first perfect five-pin bowling game in Canada in
1934 was able to get only one perfect throw away and failed
to take home the big money.
Time heals
"Time heals" or "what a difference a few weeks
make" are two expressions which certainly could apply to
the Hamilton Tiger Cats and their supporters.
We tuned in to CHML Hamilton for a few moments
Saturday afternoon to the program, "The Fifth Quarter"
which is a post-game show.
The attitudes of the callers were a far cry from those of
about six weeks ago when the Tiger Cats had just lost seven
games in a row.
At that time, fans calling in to the show were condem-
ning everything about the Hamilton football club.
Saturday afternoon, after they had just blanked the
Montreal Alouettes to gain entry to the Eastern Canadian
final, the Tiger Cats were hailed as the best team ever
assembled on the mountain and sure to win the Grey Cup.
Suppose that we could say no one is "as fickle" as a
sports fan and with as short a memory.
We will go out on the proverbial limb and call Hamilton
to continue their fine play of recent weeks to get past the
Ottawa Roughriders and the Edmonton Eskimos to repre-
sent the West in the November 28 Grey Cup at CNE
Stadium in Toronto.
Sunday's Western semi-final proved that there is plenty
of "foot" left in football, All 14 points on the board by the
winning Edmonton club came from the educated toe of
Dave Cutler who continues to be one of the most proficient
place kickers in Canada.
Only single point for
Huron Park teams
COMPUTER CAR
In five Shamrock minor league
games this week, teams from
Huron Park could pick up only
one point on a tie game.
The draw came between the
Huron Park and Ilderton ban-
tarns, In three other games,
Ilderton teams scored Shutouts
over the Huron Parker& The
Ilderton pee wees won 5-0, the
midgets ran up a 3-0 count and
the atoms won by a decisive score
of 11-1. In the fifth game, the
Lambeth midgets blasted Huron
Park 15-0,
Scott Smith scored the first
Huron Park bantam goal on a
pass from Chuck Wright and
Ralph Wells converted a pass
from Rick Lather for the second,
Norm Campbell scored both
goals for Ilderton in the third
period. One was unassisted and
the other came on a pass from
Art Gregory.
The only other Huron Park goal
scored in the five games was
"Three times and you are out"
was not on the minds of the
members of the South Huron
senior Panthers football team
Saturday afternoon as they met
the Goderich Vikings for the
Huron-Perth Conference
championship.
The Panthers failing to bring
home the championship in the
last two years came through with
a solid 19-14 win over Goderich at
the South Huron field Saturday
afternoon to win the title for the
local school for the first time
since 1968.
"We came up big when it
counted." That was the comment
of South Huron coach Ron
Bogart. He continued, "It was a
great victory for our kids. They
really deserved it."
The South Huron coach added,
"I think we caught Goderich off
balance with a lot of passing.
Quarterback John Van Gerwen
used his receivers to full ad-
vantage. I'm sure that Goderich

expected more of a running game
from us."
Despite the terrible field
conditions, Van Gerwen at-
tempted 21 passes and was
successful on 11 of them, A clean
ball was used on almost every
play as the one in play was
continually mud covered.
Early in the game the South
Huron coaches spotted a flaw in
the Goderich line on punt at-
tempts and sent John Gould and
Rick Bedard right up the middle.
This move paid off as Gould was
able to block two Goderich kicks
which helped the Panthers in
field position.
The Panthers scored on the
third series of plays in the first
quarter. After the first two South
Huron plays failed they kicked to
Goderich.
The first Viking running play
resulted in a fumble and Mark
Desjardine pounced on the ball
fora South Huron recovery. On
the next play Brad Cann went
over the Goderich goal line from
three yards out and the score was
6-0.
With about five minutes left in
the first period, John Van Ger-
wen completed three consecutive
passes. He hit Phil Knight for 15
yards, Gord Baird for 20 yards
and then found Steve Knight in
the clear and the Hensall
youngsters completed a suc-
cessful play of 20 yards for the
second major score of the af-
ternoon. -r
' Midway through the second
quarter after the ball was ex-
changed three times for each
team, John Van Gerwen again
found his passing targets. He hit
Phil Knight for eight yards to
move to the Goderich 20 yard
line.
From here Van Gerwen put the
ball into the air and Gord Baird
made a fantastic one handed
catch in the coffin corner just
inside the goal line.
Baird's great grab put the
Panthers in front 18-0. This lead
didn't last very long as Lee
Arbour of the Vikings ran the
kickoff back 75 yards for the first
touchdown of the afternoon for
the opposition.
The Vikings came out in the
second half with a little more
desire. Another great run by
Arbour this time for 50 yards was
nullified by a clipping penalty,
John Gould was through to
block the Goderich punt and gave
his team possession on the
Vikings 35. After two incomplete
passes, Van Gerwen booted the
ball into the Goderich end zone
for a single point and the final of
the day for the Panthers.
Lee Arbour galloped 70 yards
for the final Vikings score late in
the fourth period as he was able
to get outside.
The Panthers led in the yards
gained statistics by 294 yards to
192. The locals gained 72 yards on
the ground, 150 through the air

yards, Steve Knight hauled in one
aerial for 20 yards and Doug
Mclsaac picked up five on a
reception.
On the ground Gord Baird
chalked up 40 yards and Doug
Mclsaac gained 24 yards.
The Panthers also held an edge
in territorial play managing to
run off 53 plays while Goderich
had 40 opportunities to move the
ball.
John Gould led the tackling
brigade with seven hits. Next in
line came Brad Taylor and Jeff
O'Brien with six apiece and Paul
Brooks and Larry Regier were in
on four stops each.

Thedford win over Huron Park.
