Over $700 to the Arena Fund
was realized from the sale of
tickets on two quilts at the
Euchre Party and Draw on
Tuesday night. The quilters of the
arena ladies' committee and .
other interested quilters, thanked
all who bought tickets and
assisted in any way to help raise
this amount.
The first prize quilt was won by
Tony Van Rooy, 643 Windermere
Drive, London and the second by
Angeline DeBrouwer, R.R.3,
Lucan. Draw prize winners
during the evening included
Honor Stanley, Oney McFalls,
Barbara Carter, Gladys Ross,
Ellen Collins, Olga Bond and
Harold Cobleigh.
Euchre winners were: high
lady, Harriet Holmes; high
man, Barbara Carter playing a
man's card; Lone hands, Neil
Campbell. Coffee and doughnuts
were served by members of the
committee.

Institute on Wednesday evening
in the Lucan United Church.

welcomed members and guests
and opened the meeting with the
Institute Ode and the Mary
Stewart Cclect, A time of silence
was observed in memory of
Margaret Elliott, who will be
greatly missed from our Branch.
A Gideon Bible has been donated
in her memory.
The Motto "A home should be
the centre but not the cir-
cumference of your life" was
given most interestingly by Bea
Madden,
The meeting was turned over to
the convener for Family and
Consumer Affairs, Bernice
Lockyer, who called on Phyllis
O'Neil, one of the Club leaders,
Mrs. O'Neil gave a resume of the
last and the present projects and
told the group that Homemaking
Clubs had been started by Miss
Ethel Chapman (Now Dr.) in 1923
and had grown to 795 members in
Middlesex County by June, 1974,
Sixteen clubs participated at
Ilderton Fair this year for the
first time, each club receiving
$10.00 for their displays.
An enthusiastic singsong was
led by Iva Hodgins, with Muriel
Cobleigh at the piano,
Mrs. Lockyer introduced her
daughter, Joan, who is a student
at Fanshawe College, taking
Interior Decorating. Joan gave
an interesting talk on colour,
wallpapers, paints, rugs, etc.,
showed room arrangements in
finishing an attic, and answered
many questions from the girls
and their mothers.
Other leaders are Mrs. John
Vanderloo, Mrs. Gerald
Straatman, Mrs. Adrian
DeBrouwer, and Misses Carol
McNaughton and Ruth Anne
Atkinson. The leaders present
introduced the members of their
individual clubs,

Pam Moore thanked the Institute
members for the evening and for
their interest in Homemaking
Club work.
During the brief business
meeting chaired by the
President, former president
Muriel Cobleigh pinned Mrs.
Ashton with the President's
Institute pin, and the Branch
Directors, Rita Robb and
Winifred Jolliffe installed Mrs.
Ashton as president, Vina Emery
as vice-president and Iola Goring
as secretary.
The roll call was answered by
"A Safety Tip for the Home",
A note was read from Ruth Hill
thanking the members for
remembering her mother, Mrs.
Irwin Scott, at Thanksgiving.
A report on the proposed
Medical Centre was given by Iva
Hodgins who stated that Dr.
B.H.M. Rondeau was in the
process of turning the former
Murdy Funeral Home into a
Dental Medical Centre and was
presently negotiating with s full
time doctor for the area. The
members were delighted to hear
that once again we would have
better medical coverage for the
community.
A message was given by
Secretary Iola Goring from
Riverview Institute in connection
with Institute Plates to sell for
$3.25.
A St. Marys man was killed and
a Lucan couple injured in a two
vehicle accident early Saturday
morning on Highway 7, about a
mile west of the Prospect Hill
road.
The accident occurred at 12.30
a.m. and James Poel, RR 4, St.
Marys, died nine hours later in
University Hospital, London. He
was the driver of a westbound
pickup truck which was in
collision with another pickup
truck being driven by Howard
Currie of Lucan.
Mrs. Eileen Currie, a
passenger with her husband is in
serious condition in St. Joseph's
Hospital while Mr. Currie is a
patient in University ' Hospital.
Passengers in the Poel vehicle,
Mathew Arts and Andrew„ Van
Loon are also listed in serious
condition at University Hospital.
Ambulances from Lucan, St.
Marys and Thames Valley,
London responded to the call.
The coroner was Dr. Robert
Green, London and the crash was
investigated by Constable W. R.
Disher and Corporal Tom Collins
of the Ontario Provincial Police
detachment at Lucan. They set
damages at $3,700,
Cancer research
head is speaker
Dr. Gary Neil head of the
prestigious cancer research unit
of the Upjohn Co. , a major
pharmaceutical firm with its
headquarters in Kalamazoo,
Michigan, was the guest speaker
at the annual meeting of the
London Middlesex Unit of the
Canadian Cancer Society held in
the Auditorium of the London
Life Building Thursday evening.
Dr. Neil said he was -..inazed at
the effort that Canadian was
putting forth to raise funds for the
Cancer Society Compared with
the U.S.A. He told an audienceof
over a hundred people that great
strides had been made in
research and that with at least
ten types of cancer, patients after
Chemotherapy were able to
achieve a normal life span.
The major break through was
the use of Chemotherapy (drugs)
and Radiology combined in the
treatment of cancer. Mr. Len
Maslen, president of the Lucan
Biddulp branch of the society was
honoured with the presentation of
a plaque in recognition of his
dedication and service over the
past four years.
Attending this meeting were
the following members of the
Lucan Biddulph executive; Len
Maslen, President, Mrs. Dean
Gibson, co-campaign chairman;
Mrs. Elmer Summers, chairman
of education; and Mrs. Robert
Harloff, vice-chairman of
education.
SUPER SNACKERS
The fourth meeting of the
"Super Snackers" (Lucan No. 3)
was held on October 18 at the
home of Susan Hodgins. Mrs.
Donald O'Neil read a letter from
the Home Economist thanking
the club for having a display at
the Ilderton Fair.
The theme for the meeting was
"Casseroles", and two demon-
strations were given, one by
Tami McRoberts on how to make
a "Tuna Casserole" and the other
by Jane Straatman on "Egg
Scramble", These dishes were
enjoyed later as lunch.
Gets special'
hydro award
Ivan J. Hearn a member of the
Lucan Hydro Electric Com-
mission was the recipient of a
Long Service Scroll in
recognition of serving 16 years as
a member of the Commission.
The presentation took place at
the Annual Meeting of District
Seven of the Ontario Municipal
Electric Association held at the
Sheridon Inn in St. Thomas,
Ontario. The meeting was at•
tended by municipal electric
commissioners throughout
Western Ontario.
The Scroll was' presented by
D.I. Larkworthy of Stratford,
President of the Ontario
Municipal Electric Association,
Thursday afternoon at 3.35

Highway 4, a short distance south
of the Mount Carmel road.

The first of two Sunday
mishaps occurred at 1.15 when a
vehicle driven by Tina Moore, 492
Springbank, London left County
road 20, a half mile north of High-
way 22.

Just back from a relaxing two
weeks vacation — saw the young
chap (99) up in the Soo and happy
to say he is in good health and
sends his regards to all his
friends of Lucan and area. Must
say the trees were in all their
glory and truly a beautiful sight
to behold.
Operation service is under way

service persons in the area.
There is still a little door to door
canvassing to be done.

540 will hold their annual Poppy
Blitz commencing at 7 p.m. The
Poppy chairman Comrade E.
Degraw is looking for volunteers
to act as team captains.
Then on Saturday, November 6
he will be looking for volunteers
for street sales of poppies. ThiS is
a most important part of Legion,
Comrades. Let us make sure that
everyone wears a Poppy in
Remembrance.
Sunday, November 7 the
members of Branch 540 are
requested to muster at the Legion
Hall for our annual Remem-

Members of the Sunshine and
Busy Buddies Groups met in the
lower Masonic Hall on Thursday
afternoon for their brief business
meeting chaired by President
Merna O'Neil.
Two new members were
welcomed to the Sunshine Group,
Mildred Hirtzel and Mary Kooey.
Jean Miller and Irene Egan
were appointed to act as Social
Conveners for the next two
months and Muriel Cobleigh and
Pearl Shoebottom as lunch
conveners,
Birthday greetings were ex-
tended to Olga Bond, in absentia. •
The Christmas draw will be made
at a later date for $2 gifts and all
members are asked to get their $2
contribution toward the dinner, in
as soon as possible.
Two films were enjoyed,

member Cecil Robb and Bingo

Sunshine Group. The Busy
Buddies continued thier
