Jets blow early game lead
lose 8016 to Durham Huskies
The Lucan-Ilderton Jets were
unable to hang onto an early lead
Friday night and dropped an 8-6
decision to the Durham Huskies
in• Ontario Hockey Association
Continental senior league action.
The Jets are in action on three
occasions this week. Last night,
Wednesday, they were in Port
Stanley, Friday night they travel
to Preston to meet the Jesters
and Sunday afternoon they will
play host to the Woodstock
Athletics, Game time is 2 p.m. at
the liderton arena.
Against Durham, Friday, the
Jets took a 3-1 lead at the end of
the first period but were unable to
hang on as the Huskies bounced
back to get on even terms at 4-4
by the end of 40 minutes of play.
Durham scored three goals in
the first half of the third period
and the Jets were not able to
catch up.
Tile game was only 20 seconds
old when Rick Fifield of the Jets
put the puck past Gord Becker of
the Huskies with assists going to
Randy Roth and Brian Murphy.
Scott Graham made it 2-0 near
the nine minute mark as he
converted a pass from Jack
.Chitchase. Bill Brown notched
the first Durham score moments
later and Fifield with his second
successful shot regained the two
goal margin for his club. Assist
went to Ed Parkinson and Bill
Bannerman.
Goals by Don Newman, Jim
Aitken and Bill Brown before 12
minutes had elapsed in the
second period put the -Huskies
ahead 4-3. Jacques Cousineau
finalized a three-way effort with
Ed Robb and Jamie Robb at 13:45
to put the Jets even on the
scoreboard.
Kim Grant, Larry Schaeffer
and Gary Sproule scored quickly
for Durham by the eight minute
mark of the third period to take a
commanding 7-4 lead.
The Jets got one back when
Barry Baynham's shot hit fhe
Durham net at 13:44 on a play set
up by Gord Peters and Randy
Roth,
Facing a two goal deficit, coach
Don Urbshott pulled goalie Lorne
Daer in favour of a sixth attacker
but the move backfired when Bill
Brown set the puck into the
empty L-1 net.
The Jets were able to score
once more with only four minutes
remaining on the clock, Scott
Graham was the marksman with
assists going to Steve Proctor and
Barry Baynham.
The game was more than an
hour late in starting when the
Durham team was slowed down
by a snow and hail storm in
Harriston.
Penalties were fairly scarce
with referee Brad Horton of
Chatham called six Durham
infractions and three against the
Jets.
