No decision yet
on more layoffs
Exeter's RAP committee failed 1,04St week, council agreed to
to reach any decision this week
regarding fUrther staff layoffs.
Chairman Ruth Durand said
Members are still hopeful that
the Local Initiatives Program
grant will be approved and
decided to hold in abeyance any
decision until the final verdict is
received from LIP officials.
Last week, Mrs. Durand told
council that the financial
situation faced by RAP indicated
that further layoffs would be
required. Three staff members
have already been laid off and
only resources manager Alvin
Willert and recreation director
Jim McKinley remain on duty,
Word on the LIP grant is ex-
pected by this weekend and Mrs.
Durand said RAP would pr'obably
hold another meeting within a
week to determine their course of
action if the grant is not received,
She has reported that RAP
anticipates having their funds
depleted by the end of November.
, If the LIP grant i$ received,
however, the other three em-
ployees (Liz Varley, John Roelofs
and Jim Guenther) would be
recalled and another person may
possibly be hired. A grant of
$10,000 has been requested for
park work.

impaired driving and also of

to possession of marijuana. He
was also sentenced to one day in
jail for another charge of failing
to appear in court as ordered on
October 19.

OFFICE FOR SALE
Members of the South Huron
Recreation Centre committee
have decided to sell their
headquarters building which has
been located beside the PUC
office.
Frank Giffin said the coin-
mittee hoped to have the building
sold before winter sets in.
The building was purchased
from Traylor Industries
Hensel'. It is a rflobile offic'd
facility.
Giffin said the committee
hoped to sell the facility for the
same price they paid for it -
$3,000.
Deputy-reeve Ken Campbell is
the only present member of
Stephen township council who
has indicated he will be seeking
re-election for the 1977-78 term,
At the October 19 meeting of
council, Campbell said he would
like to try for another two years,
He added, "I'm just getting my
feet wet."
Reeve Cecil Desjardine said he
would leave the reeve's seat
vacant if any member of the
current council wished to step up,
The three councillors Allan
Walper, Ralph Weber and Doug
Russell are undecided about
seeking re-election,
Nomination papers, will , be
available at the clerk's office in
Crediton beginning at 9 a.m. on
November 1.. Nominations close

pay the stipend of Liz Varley to
continue to da the bookkeeping
for RAP. It is expected she will
work about one day per week.
Mrs. Durand suggested to
council that rather than pay for
the books to be audited, the
money be used to have Mrs.
Varley continue, It was explained
that otherwise the books would
have to be kept by the clerk's
office staff and they had in-
dicated they were too busy to
undertake the work at this time.
Members of the Exeter Public
Utilities Commission gave
permission Monday to manager
Hugh Davis to proceed with the
change to _computer billing for
domestic hydro users in town.
Davis said the approximately
260 commercial accounts have
been converted to computer
billing. He added, "We believe
computer billing is good. It is the
trend of the times and does away
with one set of books."
The change in billing will in-
volve 1,309 domestic customers.
In asking for an immediate
start on the project bavis said,
"If we are to meet the March 31,
1977 deadline a start must be •
made now,"
Commission chairman Ted
Pooley in approving of the move
said, "I would hope and imagine
that any new Commission
members would endorse what we
have done on this matter."
Mayor Shaw added, "It's a big
job, let's go ahead."
Manager Hugh Davis reported
that 200 meters were now "out for
retest", He explained these were
meters that were converted from
25 cycle-15 amp to 60 cycle
saying, "It takes a tremendous
amount of time and money for
these retests with the new
tolerances imposed by the
federal government."
Davis said two or three ser-
vices are being changed each
week, "This is a good way to
switch to the 60 cycle meters on a
gradual basis." Chairman Pooley
reported he had received several
complaints from residents of
radio interference. Davis said
this problem would be checked
out but said, "We have noise
suppressors on every light south
of Gidley."
The Commission asked
manager Davis for a recom-
mendation on updating the rental
fees on the Hicks and Moody
