The Exeter Times-Advocate, 1976-10-14, Page 12Usborne township public school carried away the most pennants from a cross-country competition held Thursday at the farm of Ron Jewitt. They won top team honors in the Junior Girls, Intermediate Girls, Intermediate Boys and Senior Girls divisions over the five other school teams entered. Hensall public school team won the top honors in the Junior Boys division and Mc- Curdy won in the Senior Boys division. The course was approximate- ly 1 1/2 miles in length over fairly rugged hilly terrain. This is the first time the schools have used such a rugged course as usually one is staked out at Pineridge near Hensall and is a fairly flat course. However, the increased difficulty of the course did not stop the students from all the schools making a fine showing and putting a lot of effort into their races. The individual winners in the various categories are as follows: Junior Boys-first, Scott Din- ney, Stephen township; second, Rod Parker, Hensall; third, Brent Dawson, Usborne town- ship. Dart margin is reduced The first place lead of the Sassenachs in the Exeter Legion mixed dart league has been cut to three points. The Sassenachs are first with 21 points and the Winkers are second with 18. Three teams, Out of Space, Itchy Niters and DR's are deadlocked for third spot with 16 points apiece and the Outlaws, Last Chance and Doublers are next with 14 points each. Marg Hedley leads the ladies with nine games won and Barb Hearn is next with eight wins. Oliver Jaques and Bill Lenk each have eight victories to pace the men while Ray Snell has won seven games. The only power play goal during the entire contest was the fifth Exeter marker counted by Brooks while Marty Wraith of the Irish was off for cross checking. This state- ment may be true but the showings made in pre-season con- tests by two hockey clubs indicate their fan's will be in for an exciting and interesting year. Friday night at the Huron Park arena, the Exeter Hawks showed they will be heard from in the Ontario Hockey Association Western Junior "D" series by scoring a very impressive victory over the Lucan Irish, On the same theme, the Lucan-Ilderton Jets gained a draw with the London Kings in their first exhibition outing. The Kings a week or so ago played a draw with the professional Dallas Black Hawks which indicates the fine calibre of hockey played in the Senior Continental loop. Both the Hawks and Jets open their regular seasons tomorrow night, Friday. The Hawks will be at the Huron Park arena at 8:30 p.m. to take on the Tavistock Braves while the Jets will be on their home ice at the Ilderton arena to face the same London Kings. The Hawks have most of last year's players back again and coach Glen Wiese has been taking a good look at a large number of midget aged players who are ready to move into higher company. The brand of hockey in the Continental league will probably be better than ever as more and more professional players return to their home areas. Minor pro hockey appears to be on the decline which will certainly help the top notch senior loops. Continental league teams are allowed to sign three ex- professionals each year. Certainly adding to the stature of the Jets this year will be Jack Chipchase and Brian Murphy. Both are long on pro experience and they are bound to help Don Urbshott's club a lot. Chance to get lost The South Huron Recreation Centre fund raising com- mittee members are organizing another car rally. It will be held on Sunday, October 24. The rally held a few weeks ago proved very popular for the two dozen families which participated and this one should bring about more participation. Cars will leave the Exeter fairgrounds between 1 and 2 p.m. and rally 'round the townships". This rally will take entrants around a well planned course in the immediate area of South Huron but don't worry there will be plenty of opportunity to get lost if direc- tions are not read perfectly. Here is another chance for the start of family feuds. We know of several families where the driver and navigator roles will be reversed from the first rally. At the end of the October 24 rally cider and donuts will be available and contestants will be able to get ready for Hallowe'en with a "bob for apples." — It is true • Would you believe it if we Said that Canada ended in a tie with the Soviet Union in this summer's Olympic Games at Montreal. Most people would say we lost all sanity. But, just a mo- ment. We have facts and figures which bears out the previous statement. Some of the information was gleaned from a recent column by Jack McArthur, afinancial colum- nist for the Toronto Daily Star, In an August 4 column, McArthur contends that Canada did "reasonably well in the very area where so many Canadians believe it did worse in the performance of its athletes." Agreeing that there is no really good way of measuring performance of one's athletes, McArthur chose as his criterion the number of first, second and third place medals collected per million population. Using this method he was able to determine that Canada was tied for 15th place with Norway and the Soviet Union and was ahead of the United States and many other countries. This placing also puts Canada eighth in the non- Communist world. This is worth mentioning because non- Communist countries do not have the same great cen- tralized government arrangements to develop and also en- courage sports. Unlike the Communists, some of our best athletes are allowed to pursue their endeavours as a profit making private enterprise. By Olympic standards they are classed as professional and not eligible to represent their country. Planning big night The fund raising committee for the new South Huron recreation centre has planned an elimination draw and stag to be held on Thursday night, October 21 at the Huron Park Recreation Centre. One of the organizers is Doug Ellison and he has lined up an interesting night of entertainment and activities. Five films will be shown throughout the evening begin- ning at 8 p.m, and running well into the next morning. The first film will show a championship boxing match between the Brown Bomber Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano. This is an old fight, so you better have a look to find out who did win. The Academy Award winning film, A Place To Stand will be shown at 9 p.m. and this will be followed by the 1972 Canada-Russia hockey series. Next comes a film on skiing and the movies will end with the showing of the 1973 Grey Cup between the Ottawa Roughriders and Edmonton Eskimos, Anyone with an accurate eye and arm will be interested in the water drop game. A thrown ball hitting the target will send one of six celebrities flying into a tub of water, Consenting, probably against their will to participate in this contest are mayor Bruce Shaw, rec director Jim McKinlay, recreation centre chairman John Stephens, Usborne councillor Murray Dawson, Lion George Godbolt and Atm Laithwaite of the EMHA. Probably the speediest event of the evening will be a frog race. Close to a dozen area persons are now out searching nearby creeks and streams for the most agile frogs, Gary MacLean will be entering the Adidas Sneaker and Brett Lavier of Becker's Milk Store has Harry the Homo in training. Prizes in excess of $1,000 will be given away. Here's a chance to enjoy a good evening of fun and assist the recrea- tion centre campaign, Tickets are $10 and will admit two persons, HEADING FOR THE NET — This shot by Gerald Weido appears to be heading for the open net, but it slid right through the crease and out the other side. Hawks Brian Taylor (10) skates in for the rebound, but he missed. Exeter won the exhibition contest by a 5-0 count over Lucan, The Hawks meet Tavistock in their league opener Friday night at Huron Park. Hawks get impressive win, meet Tavistock, Friday night The Exeter Hawks started the 1976-77 season on the right foot Friday night with an impressive 5-0 victory over the Lucan Irish Six. The game was played at the Huron Park arena and was the first exhibition for both clubs. Hawks coach Glen Weise used a total of 23 players in an attempt to get down to a regular com- plement for the opening game. The Hawks held a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period of play and increased the margin to five by the halfway mark of the second stanza when Weise brought on a number of newcomers.
