Granton church women mark Thanksgiving
By MRS. E. SUMMERS
Unit 1 of the UCW met at the
home of Mrs. C.B. Westman on
Wednesday afternoon. There
were 8 members and 4 visitors
present.
The program was in charge of
Mrs. Earle Middleton and Mrs.
Elmer Summers. Mrs. Middleton
gave a reading entitled "Twenty-
four Hours a Dasy" and Mrs.
Summers led in the study on the
first chapter of the new study
Book Justice not Charity,
This chapter was on being a
Canadian and entitled The
Comforts of Home, the author
Douglas Roche MP said that
Canada is a Rich Country,
Canadians dress better, eat more
and waste more than all but a few
countries and are more con-
cerned about the price of gas
going up, than the plight of
millions starving in the Third
World Countries.
A Harvest Hymn was sung in
unison and Mrs. Summers
completed the program with a
reading containing the words in a
letter that nurse Edith Cavell
wrote just before she went to her
execution on October 12, 1915 for
aiding prisoners to escape during
first World War. "Patriotism is
not enough, I must have no bit-
terness towards anyone."
Unit (3) met at the home of
Mrs, Ken Waugh on Tuesday
evening October 5. Mrs. Doug
Brown presided and opened the
meeting with a reading "Rules
for daily life".
Most of the business was
devoted to the preparations for
the bazaar November 6 as this
unit is in charge of the
arrangements. Tickets
are printed and now incirculation,
These can be obtained from all
UCW unit members also other
groups CGIC, Explorers & Cubs
and Scouts etc.
The program conveners were
Mrs. Fred Cook & Mrs. Cliff
Cook. These ladies had engaged a
special speaker Mrs. Joan
Simons, past president of the
Parents of Children with learning
disabilities Association. Mrs.
Simons illustrated her talk with
film. This was followed by a
question and answer period with
discussion.
The hostess for Unit 4 was Mrs.
Kenneth Hardie Wednesday
evening. Mrs. Nelson Tate
presided
Mrs. Harvey Kennedy and Mrs.
Kenneth Hardie were in charge of
the program, Mrs. Kennedy took
the first chapter of the new study
book "Justice not Charity" this
was on being a Canadian and was
entitled "The Comforts of Home,
This created a stimulating
discussion. Mrs. Hardie gave a
reading pertaining to
Thanksgiving,
Mrs. Wm. Lambert & Mrs.
James Kerr, assisted the hostess
to serve lunch.
Unit 5 met at the home of Mrs.
Mary Rudd Wednesday evening.
Eleven members and two visitors
attended. Mrs, Charles McRobert
presided and opened the meeting
with the hymn "Take my Life"
followed by the Medition dealing
with the Exodus of The children
of Israel crossing the Red Sea.
Program conveners were Mrs.
William Jones & Mrs. Garnet
Baker who used a Thanksgiving
Theme with reading and poems.
Lunch was served by the hostess.
Church news
Rev. Elwood Morton was in
charge of the Thanksgiving
service at the United Church on
Sunday morning and took his
sermon from Psalm 96 and en-
titled his message Counting our
Blessings. Thanksgiving is
good; thanksliving is better.

best. By testing children you are
deceiving parents who will
assume that, because their child
has been tested, follow-through
programs will be automatically
forthcoming."
Without follow-through she
charged that the Board was,
"wasting the time of the testers,
wasting tax-payers money,
raising hope of false expectations
in parents to whom you are
responsible and failing the
child."
She suggested that the talents
of these people be applied in
programming and follow-
through, not just in testing.
In addition to asking for an
independent study of the question
she asked that an interim
program be set up to assist
students with specific difficulties
until the other study is completed
and a policy has been
established,
"The interim program," Mrs.
Van den Broeck said, "should
consist of grants to allow older
children with learning difficulties
to board at schools which have
been established to meet their
needs; assistance with the
financing and setting up of
tutoring pr ograms where
warranted; provision of a liaison
person to work specifically with
parents and to assure that
specialized needs are being met,
of the year in the spirit of
thankfulness.
If gratitude is due from man to
man how much more from man
to his Maker says the minister.
Explorers & Junior Choir
members are requested to meet
at the church on Monday evening
October 18, instead of Wednesday
as was originally planned. Junior
Choir at 6:45 p.m. & Explorers
7:15.
St. Thomas Anglican Church
withheld their morning service so
that the members could unite with
the congregation of Saintsbury
Anglican Church in celebrating
their anniversary. A number of
people from Granton attended
the service.
Persona ls
Congratulations are extended
to Mr. & Mrs. Douglas Garrett,
RR 2 Denfield on the arrival of a
son and brother for Allison at St.
Joseph's Hospital London,
October 10.
Wishes for a speedy recovery
are extended to Mrs. Peter Van
Leishout who is a patient in St.
to set up workshops, films on
learning disabilities for parents
and staff and to co-ordinate
volunteers to assist with
remedial work so that the im-
mediate needs of specialized
assistance can be met."
Director of Student Services for
the board Ila Keyes explained to
the meeting that following testing
a list of recommendations are left
at the school to be acted on by the
teachers involved with these
children.
She also explained that more
than 2,600 students were tested by
the Student Services staff and
that insufficient staff meant that
a more complete program of
services after testing could not be
offered. "With a staff of 50," she
suggested, "perhaps more could
be done."
"I have 304 referrals on my
desk today and this is only the
end of September," she ex-
plained.
Board member R.J. Elliot said
he thought Mrs. Van den Broeck
was correct on at least one point.
He said it was very likely that
remedial teachers were being
flooded because basic skills
"may not be taught in the
classroom,"
The Board accepted Mrs. Van
den Broeck's brief and referred it
to the education committee for
further study and for possible
recommendations.
