5 losses, 2 wins in Minor Hockey
The Exeter Bantam "A" team
won their first game of the
Ilderton Lion's Tournament that
ended with their opponents
swinging sticks and the ejection
of their coach from the game in
Ilderton on Sunday.
Exeter beat the rough Saltfleet
team 5-3 in a game that saw 23
minor penalties called, 13 to
Saltfleet.
Exeter took a lead at the
halfway point of the first period
on a deflection by Brian Mercer,
with assists going to Doug
Fletcher and Dave Bogart.
Each team took 3 minors in the
period but penalty killing by both
teams kept the score down to the
single goal.
At 9:15 of the second Mercer
picked up the puck at center ice,
skated into the Saltfleet end and
beat the lone defenceman. A drop
pass to Doug Brooks set him up
for the goal to make the score 2-0.
Both teams had one man in the
box for simultaneous high
sticking infractions.
The third period saw Exeter
come out flying, as Preston
Dearing and Bogart set up
Mercer for his second goal of the
game with 1:26 gone on the clock.
Just over a minute later Bogart
took a pass from Mercer and put
it home to give the Exeter team
the points they needed to win.
Leading by four goals, Exeter
laid back and seemed to fall
apart as Saltfleet came up with
three goals in the period to close
the gap, The last goal came in the
dying minutes on a power play
and set the stage for the fracas
that ended the match.
Saltfleet pulled their goalie but
were slapped with a bench minor
which ignited their coaches fire
and he charged out on the ice
after the referee. He was sub-
sequently put out of the game.
Dan Bell insured the victory on a
long shot that skittered in to the
empty net and wound up the
scoring.
The Saltfleet players came out
after the Exeter team, swinging
sticks and trying to start fights.
Coach Ron Bogart, trying to
avoid a brawl because of what he
called their "unsportsmanlike
conduct" ordered his team to the
dressing room. They did not
return for the customary shaking
of hands that usually follows a
match of this nature. He said that
he feared that some of the
players might involve them-
selves in the, shinannigans and
feared that Exeter might lose
players through suspen-
sions "because of that nonsense."
Exeter was outshot on the
game 30 to 22 with good
goaltending by Doug Hoffman
and Steve Wells keeping them
well ahead until the third period
lapse.
Exeter's next game in the
tournament is Sunday at noon.
Should they win this match, as
Bogart expects they will, they
- It was a rather dismal week for
Exeter in minor hockey action, as
they dropped 5 of the regulation
games that they played, The two
winning teams were the Bantam
"A" team and the Pee Wee house
league team.

first period, went to Dave
Jackson from Ed Willis and Rick
Lindenfield.
There were only four penalties
called in the game, three to ,
Exeter, including a butt-ending
call to Dave Jackson that drew
him a match penalty at the 10:00
mark of the third period. Contact
was made with the St,. Mary's
player but no injury resulted.
Juvenile
Lots of scoring and penalties
were the highlights of the
Juvenile's 9-8 loss to Dorchester.
109 minutes were handed out by
referee Brian Campbell, in-
cluding three game misconducts
to Exeter's Rick Moody and
Larry Clarke and Dorchester's
Dave Murray,

goals by Steve Knight and Randy
Regier before Jim Legg and Rick
Sinclair came back to tie the
game for Dorchester.
Dorchester then got two more
unanswered goals from Larry
Richard and Dave Murray to
take a 4-2 lead to the dressing
room.
Captain Neil VanBaker added
to their lead as did Murray, who
picked up his second of the night
to make it 6-2. Exeter's replies
came from Knight, again, and
Paul Shapton.
Despite a four goal third
period, Exeter was unable to pull
the game from the fire. Sinclair
added to his total to make it 7-4,
Regier closed the gap for Exeter
before Richard again gave them
a three goal lead with his Second
of the night. Regier with the hat
trick and Rick Moody brought
Exeter within one goal before

scoring for Exeter.

penalties handed out.

second tilt in a row when they lost
to St. Mary's 5-1 at the arena on
Wednesday evening.

score in the first period, tied the
game when John Bailey took a
pass from. Blair Burbridge for the
only goal of the period.
St. Mary's picked up four more
goals in the third period, with
Jamie Dunbar getting the game
winner. Scott Ferguson, Bailey,
and Don Baird gave St. Mary's
their game winning total,

The Bantam "A" team swept
over St. Mary's and an exhibition
match with their "B" coun-
terparts by 'identical scores, 4-1,
Both games were at the arena.
Doug Brooks and Brian Mercer
split the goals in the game
against St, Mary's to give the
Bantam "A" team the points they
needed to win. Brooks opened the
scoring in the first period with an
unassisted short handed goal. He
also got the only marker of the
second when he took a pass from
Dan Bell to give Exeter a 2-0 lead.
St. Mary's then got on the
scoreboard midway through the
period before Mercer put it out of
reach when he scored on passes
from Dave Bogart and Brooks.
Mercer finished off the scoring
in the third period with another
shorthanded goal.
Although the "A" team won
the exhibition match on Sunday,
the real star of the game was
goaltender Doug Hoffman who
was switched to the "B" team for
the game. Hoffman came up with
55 saves as he faced 59 shots in
the game,
His unbelievable performance
limited the "A" team to four
goals, ' Dan Bell opened the
scoring when he managed to get
one past Hoffman after he was
set up by Larry Dawson and Jeff
Fuller.

CAR:DRIVER
APRIL 1975
"Whole populations of drivers will live for
years with this car, strongly impressed by its
generally nimble disposition and its sensitive feel
of the road through the steering wheel and
brake pedal. It slips through city traffic like a
bicycle and thrives on the parking-space rem-
nants most cars pass by. You can stuff enough
groceries for a football team through the rear
hatch while the back seat folds and pivots
forward out of the way. The only thing you'll
need a trailer for is objects too heavy to boost
across the high lift-over."

THE MAGAZINE FOR MEN AUGUST 1975
"VW's new Rabbit is significant because it is a
complete departure for Volkswagen, and also
because it, is the specific type of car that Detroit
will be building in the 1980's.
The statistics speak for themselves: accommo-
dation for four, a seventy-horsepower engine,
fuel consumption of thirty-eight mpg (U.S.) and
a weight of under two thousand pounds.
What they came up with was a car that doesn't
have an ounce of. fat, one which provides
excellent operating economy, as well as perfor-
mance and value. Personally, I think that VW's
Rabbit is one very good idea ahead of its time."

"The winner, and not by a hare (sorry,
couldn't resist). This car does it all: it's small,
light, roomy and' fast., with nimble and respon-
sive steering, ride and handling. A modern and,
sophisticated • car with a handsome Guigiaro
designed hatchback body. The Rabbit offers one of
the most space-saving mechanical layouts we've
seen yet: front-wheel drive, transverse engine
and a unique, independent rear suspension fea-
turing, an integral anti-roll bar and using•so little
space it's remarkable. The Rabbit has a solid feel
and an ultramodern look to it.
Best of all it is almost sinfully en-
joyable to drive,"

Mechanics
-The most important new import for 1975 is
the VW Rabbit,
The 1800-pound Rabbit is a mechanical mas-
terpiece. It gets up to 60 mph in about 12
seconds-giving it the edge on some V8 subcom-
pacts. Its hatchback design provides 24.7 cubic
feet of luggage capacity with the rear seat
folded.
VW got the greatest possible amount of
usable interior space into the smallest possible
outer shell-and an exterior with some style."
