scores in the middle frame to post
the victory.
In Friday night's contest, the

goals.

and organizational night."
Those already registered with
a team and anyone else wishing
to compete is urged to attend.
Four teams have already been
organized and it is hoped enough
additional players will turn out to
form two more clubs.
Ready to go each Thursday
night are Newby Tire, Les Pines
the Ottawas and MacLean-
Passmore.

A quick look at the scoring standings in the Eastern
Canadian Football Conference shows that the foot is still in
football. The four leading scorers are all field goal kickers,
Gerry Organ of the Ottawa Rough Riders came through
with 16 points Sunday in his team's final game to up his
season total to 124, three more than Zenon Andrusyshyn of
the Toronto. Argonauts,
Ian Sunter of the Hamilton Tiger Cats was third with
109 points followed by Don Sweet of Montreal with 107
points, Another 23 points back was the top halfback point
getter, Art Green of Ottawa.
Every once in a while we get into a controversy with a
friend over the merits of Canadian and American style foot-
ball, We still stick.to our guns that the Canadian single point
on a kick is very important and should be retained.
Slowly but surely some other aspects of the American
game are creeping into ours, but we hope the single point or
rouge as it was known in the good old days will always be
retained.
While talking about Eastern Canadian football, the
Toronto Argonauts are always good for a word or two. Each
year the Argos appear to be the best team on paper but
when they hit the turf at CNE stadium a lot of things seem
to happen.
In recent years, fellows like Joe Trieissman and Eric
Allen were supposed to bring the Argonauts into more
favour with their fans..
This year, the hopes of the Argos rested more with new-
ly installed coach Russ Jackson then on any player on the
field. Jackson who enjoyed a very successful career as
quarterback with the Ottawa Rough Riders failed to pass on
his success to the Scullers on the field.
The Argos last won the Grey Cup in 1952. The last time
they were in the national final was in 1971 when they lost 17-
11 to the Calgary Stampeders.
Now the hopes of the Toronto football team for the 1976
season are on the way up with the weekend signing of
Anthony Davis. The former Southern. California super star
became a free agent Sunday and was quickly gobbled up by
Argo owner Bill Hodgson with a mammoth five year con-
tract.
If Argo fortunes continue at their current pace Davis
will likely be around for more than a year or two.
Saturday's 26-10 loss by the Argos to Hamilton killed
their playoff hopes for this year. It was the third time in the
past four years that the Argos missed the playoffs and
Saturday's game was a repeat of the 1974 loss to Hamilton
in a similar situation.
A Toronto radio announcer probably came up with the
best summation of the Toronto situation at half-time when
he said, "They won't have to worry about Attorney General
Roy McMurtry coming after them for much violence in
sports.
r While the Argos were setting records of dubious quali-
tty, three Western Conference players were setting records
'of their own.
Dave Cutler of the Edmonton Eskimos kicked four field
goals Saturday night as his club downed British Columbia
Lions 12-8. His successful kicks Saturday gave him 40 for
the season surpassing the single season record of 36 set last
year by Gerry Organ of Ottawa.
Cutler's team-mate George McGowan caught nine
passes Saturday giving him 97 for the regular season one
more than the previous mark of 96 set by Terry Evanshen of
the Calgary Stampeders in 1967.
Calgary Stampeder back Willie Burden gained 239
yards on the ground Sunday to up his season total to 1,897
yards. The previous record was 1,794 yards. It was set in
1961 by former Stampeder great Earl Lunsford.
Enough talk about the past in football. Now for a
fearless prediction on the upcoming Grey Cup playoffs. The
Rough Riders will win the Grey Cup. That's right, either the
Ottawa Rough Riders or the Saskatchewan Rough Riders.
Gives us two chances to be wrong.
End soccer season
Officials of the Exeter Centennial Soccer club are
holding a soccer snack for all the members of the various
Exeter minor soccer teams at the SHDHS cafeteria Satur-
day afternoon at 2.30 p.m.
The squirt soccer club which was so successful in wide
spread competition in Canada and the United States this
summer will be making a trip to England in the spring.
Centennial officials are planning various fund raising
projects in the next couple of months to allow the
youngsters to make the trip in mid-April.
Tickets on a draw will go on sale next week. The big
prize is a return air flight ticket to England with the team.
Tonight, Thursday at the Exeter arena is skate night for
anyone wishing to compete in this year's Exeter and dis-
trict Rec hockey league.
Players are still needed for two more clubs in order to
form a six team league. Anyone can come out for a skate
tonight from 8 to 10 p.m.
The four teams registered in the Rec league are Newby
Tire, Les Pines, the Ottawas and MacLean-Passmore,

Hour for
shinny play
Exeter's recreation director
Jim McKinlay said this week that
a new activity would be available
at the Exeter arena this winter.
From 10 to 11 a.m. each
Tuesday and Thursday morning
will be set aside for "shinny
hockey." Anyone wishing to play
hockey for fun or just get some
additional exercise will be
welcome. The fee will be one
dollar for each one hour session.
on the offence. Too difficult to
make a decision."
On the opening kickoff, Lee
Arbour of Goderich ran the ball
back 50 yards. It proved to be the
best gain of the day for the op-
position, The South Huron
defence held and forced the
Vikings to punt and this happened
many times during the afternoon.
Goderich was held to three first
downs on the ground and one
through passing.
The only point of the first
quarter came when an attempted
field goal by Paul Brooks went
wide, Good running by Brian
Taylor and Doug Mclsaac put the
ball in scoring position.
Another good ground attack put
the Panthers deep into Goderich
territory, and Doug McIsaac
° lugged the ball from four yards
out. Paul Brooks booted the
convert.
Later in the same quarter
Brian Taylor broke into the end
zone from a similar distance with
Brooks again splitting the
uprights and the score was 15-0.
A 17 yard forward pass from
quarterback John Van Gerwen to
Gord Baird produced the final
Panther touchdown. Steve
Knight's convert was good.
Doug Mclsaac was the leading
ground gainer for the winners
with 107 yards in 18 carries and
Brian Taylor gained 85 yards in
19 attempts at the line.
John Van Gerwen completed
four of 11 passes. Goderich could
complete only one play through
the air. Four interceptions were
made by Ken Pinder, Dan
McIver, Brian Taylor and Pete
Kincaid.
Start with safety touches
In Tuesday's junior contest,
Listowel gave up two safety
touches in the first quarter in
attempts to gain better field
position and the Panthers were
ahead 4-0.
A third concession in the
second period gave the local
school a six point margin on the
scoreboard.
Late in the second quarter,
South Huron again gained good
field position when Jeff O'Brien
recovered two fumbled punts.
On the third quarter kickoff,
Jeff O'Brien galloped 85 yards
but the play was called back
when one of his mates was caught
for clipping.
The very next play saw Paul
Pooley break up the middle for a
major score. Steve Beer's con-
version was good and the score
was 13-0.
Ted Triebner , intercepted a
Listowel pass late in the third
quarter to keep the opposition
attack bottled up. Before the
period ended South Huron gave
up a safety touch.
Paul Pooley galloped 18 yards
for the final Panther major score
after putting the ball deep in
enemy territory with a 68 yard
run.
Late in the game Listowel
rallied briefly with a touchdown
and a two point convert.
Paul Pooley was named the
best offensive Panther and Paul
