Teachers join for reunion
AS TOLD TO
MARTHA RATHBURN
In the year 1915 five out of the
many eighteen-year-old girls
who started teaching careers
that year at the Stratford
Ontario Teachers' College have
kept in touch and this year
celebrated a sixtieth an-
niversary of this important
year of their lives.
Each girl had an interesting
and busy life with her share of
happiness and sadness along
the way.
This year, their meeting of a
few short days together, was
one of their happiest as each
agreed on parting they had
never laughed so much in their
lives.
Grace McCordick of Forest
married Boyd Nixon, also a
teacher and lives in Detroit.

Mr. & Mrs. Maurice MacDonald,
Grand Bend, formerly of this
community. Mrs. MacDonald,
(nee Helen Dickins) and Maurice
attended church and Sunday
School at St. Patrick's Church
where they were both active and
willing workers. The reception
sponsored by the couples family,
Mr. & Mrs. Pete Sovereign and
Faren, Ferlin and Leeann and
Mr. & Mrs. Howard MacDonald,
Laura Lee and Jason of Lucan.
They received many gifts and a
purse of money. Mr. Harry Noels
of Forest acted as master of
ceremonies
They have a son, Dr. John
Nixon, a surgeon at Ann Arbour
and a daughter. Dr. Nixon's son
is doing interesting research in
his lab. work on the uses of
rattle snake venom. The Nixons
come back each year to their
cottage at Port Franks.
Letta Guenther of Dashwood
married Dr. Hobbs Taylor
M.P.P. She has lived many
years in the Dashwood area.
After Dr. Taylor's death some
years ago, Mrs. Taylor went
back to her teaching but is now
retired and enjoys many trips
abroad and to Hawaii, Alaska
and the far away places.
Olive O'Brien, born in Zurich,
has stayed in the Zurich area
all her life. There she has had a
long and interesting teaching
career, is busy with church and
community work and trips to
the Western Provinces.
Lucy Bower of Wingham,
married William Streight and
now lives in Willowdale. She
taught in Wingham before
going to Toronto. With her
gentleness and great un-
derstanding, she was soon
teaching retarded children. She
has been greatly loved by her
pupils, remembered by many
kind deeds and gifts.
When parting with her
friends after the 60 year
reunion she remarked she "had
laughed more in the last few
days than in the last five
years."
Gladys McDowell began her
teaching career at a little
school near her home at that
time, the "Number 13, East
Wawanosh". The family later
moved to Goderich where they
lived many, many years at the
corner of Britannia Rd. and
South Street - now the Dr. Such
offices.
Her happy home atmosphere
has stayed with her all through
het' life and her understanding
and quick-to-laughter per-
sonality has made her a happy
memory with over a thousand
former pupils in the Goderich
area alone.
She enjoys her friends and
her home life and her frequent
trips to interesting places. She'
claims happy memories keep'
one serene and those who have
pleasant thoughts are seldom
lonely.
She is blessed with
reasonably good health and is
looking forward to the next
reunion two years hence wherL
these five teachers will be
celebrating their eightieth
birthdays.

Almost a year ago now I noticed on ad in a large daily
paper for Team Canada hockey sweaters. We thought, (as
the ad suggested) that they would make ideal Christmas
presents for our three boys who are all great hockey
enthusiasts, and also five of their cousins, so we sent away
for them and paid C.O.D. Naturally we kept them until
Christmas and all the boys receiving them were thrilled to
bits, until they needed washing,
Then it was a disaster because not just one but all eight
of them shrunk like you wouldn't believe.
After writing, and several long distance phone calls we
were informed that eight new sweaters had been sent out •
. . . swell, except that they are all just as bad as the first
lot, they've now all been washed with the result that
again they are now unwearable due to shrinkage.
Can anything be done at this late date to get me my
money back, because my bank account has also shrunk
because of this firm, to say nothing about my patience.
Our first letter to this Toronto based firm received no reply,
but our second one proved more effective because our reader
has now received a refund cheque for the full price of the eight
shrinking sweaters with the request that she returns the last ship-
ment to them.

My wife has had a severe drinking problem for a long
time now.
I love her very dearly but there is just no way that the
children and I can put up with any more of this.
Many people including our doctor, have suggested that
she attend Alcoholics Anonymous. She has adamantly
refused to go until now, and at the suggestion of our
minister I have written to you in the hope you can put her
in touch with someone who can help her get to their
meetings, because I know nothing about this organization,
and she is really frightened, but I know that she will try to
better herself as she has no wish to see our once happy
home break up and she knows that I have reached the end
of my rope.
Anything you can do or suggest to help her rehabilitate
herself will be very much appreciated,
We were pleased to contact a local A.A. member on your
behalf, and he immediately got in touch with another lady with
the same serious health problem as your wife's. Since Then, ac-
cording to you, your wife has attended several A.A. meetings
with this lady A.A. member, and already your home is a much
happier place.
We wish her continued good health and feel sure that with the
"will to win" and the help of dedicated A.A. people that the
future for all of you will be much brighter .... Good luck!

got hold of a guy who claims to specialize in lawns,
the job I asked him to do was to kill the multitude
on mine. Well, he worked very conscientiously
kind of spray and he sure killed the weeds alright,
he has also managed to kill what I had of a lawn.
the least he could do, is to supply me with some
seed. What do you think?
we think, here at "IMPACT", is that you should
your lawn-man first with your complaint, because
him, he had heard nothing from you and so
that you were "another satisfied customer". He

Make changes
in lottery draw
Improvements to the Wintario
lottery including the selection of
more winning ticket numbers,
prizes and province-wide live
television coverage of draws,
were recently announced,
Beginning with the October 2
draw, four winning numbers will
be selected to determine first,
second, third and fourth grand
prizes of $100,000, $50,000, $25,000
and $25,000 respectively. For-
merly only one number was
drawn,
In addition there will be four
times as many other prizes
awarded in the expanded Win-
tario game. Series prize
denominations are $10,000, $1,000,,
$500, $100 and $25.
Citing an example, Managing
Director of the Lottery Cor-
poration, Marshall Pollock, Q.C.
said, "In a lottery where 36 series
are issued, there will now be
12,960 winning tickets as opposed
to 3,240 in a similar draw in the
original game."
This means there will be four
times AS, many chances to Win a
prize and tickets still cost $1,00
each. Tickets go on sale on
SepteMber 19.
Also starting October 2, each
Wintario draw will be televised
live every other Thursday night
