The game is of American Indian origin, derived from the inter-tribal game Baggataway, and was played by Iroquois Indians in Ontario before 1492, The game was included in the Olympic Games of 1908, Lucan youngsters got an op- portunity to play lacrosse at the clinic held at Lucan ball park, Thursday and Friday. The lacrosse clinic is composed of two instructors, a supply of sticks and Indian rubber balls, a film and a lot of first band knowledge. It's a summer job, sponsored by the Ontarie Lacrosse Association of London, for Mike Dalton, 18 and Brian Landen, 19 of Wallaceburg. They play for the Wallaceburg Junior Satans, winners of this year's junior title, Mike and Brian travel to small towns all over Southwestern Ontario to promote lacrosse and by holding clinics and try to stir up enough interest in the sport to have inner city leagues. "Kids play hockey all winter, why not lacrosse in the summer," says Brian. "All you need is an arena and a couple of interested people to coach and officiate." "People have the idea that it's a rough game, it's not. There are three times as many injuries in baseball," explained Mike. "All you need to know are the basics, passing, catching, shooting and running. It's a game for all ages, as soon as a boy is big enough to handle a stick he may play." The only equipment required is a stick. Helmets shoulderpads and shinguards are not essential but kids can use their hockey gear, About 30 young males signed up for the clinic. The game is not barred to females. but "so far the girls haven't shown much in- terest," say Mike and Brian, Jim Robertson, a veteran lacrosse player, who still has an active interest in the game made inquiries about a clinic in Lucan several years ago. This year the association contacted him to see if the village was still interested. "If there's enough interest generated by the clinic we may have a team," says Robertson. Lacrosse clinics have been held in Petrolia, 'Glencoe, Blenheim, Harrow, Wallaceburg, and Walpole Island. The Guiness Sports Record Book notes that the longest recorded throw is 162.86 yards by Barney Quinn of Ottawa on September 10, 1892. The highest score in any in- ternational match was Australia's 19-3 win over England at Manchester in May 1972. The first World Tournament was held at Toronto, Canada in 1967 and the U.S. won.
