Campers get
`deal' okayed
The Ausable River Nomads, a
group of area camping en-
thusiasts, plan to host a camp-out
during mid-August of next year.
Executive members Iry
Armstrong and Alex Meickle
outlined their plans to RAP this
week, asking for some special
consideration regarding cost of
renting the community park
facilities for the three-day event.
Armstrong indicated they
hoped to attract 200 camping
families to the event and had
budgetted $3.00 per unit for rental
fees to meet the $600 RAP fee for
the facilities.
However, he said the N6mads
,had no idea of,how successful the
event would be as it was their
first venture and requested that
RAP deduct $3.00 per unit for
each one under the 200 that may
attend.
In return, the Nomads would
pay an additional $3 per unit for
all those over 200 as well.
"That's not an unreasonable
request," suggested Derry Boyle
in urging members to go along
with the local group in their
requese;which they did.
It will be the second camp-out
planned for 1976 in Exeter. The
Ontario Association of ,Campers
and Hikers will stage their an-
nual event in Exeter over the
Victoria Day weekend.
This year's provincial event
attracted 600 camping units at
Burford.
Quorum may
be too high
What was described as a
"possible oversight" in the
Exeter RAP constitution delayed
the regular meeting Monday.
Four of the seven members
were on hand to start the meeting
about 10 minutes after it was
scheduled, but it was noted by rec
director Jim McKinlay that the
constitution stated that five
members-were required to form
a quorum,
Members had to wait for over
an hour before officially dealing
with any business until Gord
Banyham arrived. He had been
working and indicated prior to
the meeting that he would be late.
RAP chairman Jack Under-
wood is away on holidays and Bob
Pooley was sick.
While McKinlay noted that the
need for five members to con-
stitute a quorum may have been
at) oversight in the constitution,
there was no move by RAP to
amend the requirements.
Toronto; sports, Donna and Bill
Knights of Blenheim.
The 1976 picnic willqbe held in
Riverview Park on the second
Sunday in July.
Thirty ,year-old adults in
Exeter may soon be as physically
fit as a 65-year-old Swede.
That may be the implication of
a report given to Exeter's RAP
committee this week indicating
that more local adults are getting
involved in recreation activities.
Rec director Jim McKinley
said the adult swim lessons have
attracted record numbers, a
successful men's recreation ball
league has been formed and local
adults are swarming to take
tennis lessons and classes,
"Perhaps we've been
neglecting this segment of the
community in the past and
they're starting to tell us
something," McKinlay stated.
He said he would be looking at
this age group a "lot closer" in
future programs.
The popularity of the tennis
courts is resulting in some
problems and McKinlay said the
participants wouldhave to learn to
share the facility.
If not, he said, a lock would
have to be put on the gate and
participants would have to secure
a key to get access to the facility.
One of the reasons for the
popularity may be that the sport
is a novelty in Exeter, but the
courts are also attracting players
from as far away as London,
The London players have' told
local officials that the "courts are
the finest in this part of the
country."
A tennis club has been formed
and McKinlay said he would be
meeting with them to draw up
scheduling for play.
Swimming lessons are again ('
popular with all ages and over 800
are expected to be registered by
the end of the season, Last year,
there were 751 registrations for
swim classes.
However, public swimming
numbers are down slightly, due
in part to the number of private
pools now in operation, as well as
the popularity of the playground
program.
McKinlay said 83 have now
registered for the latter and he
anticipates over 100 by the end of
.the season when the youngsters
find out from their friends what
they are missing.
The rpller skating program at
the arena is also attracting good
numbers with gross revenue to
the end of June being $1,732.85.
A question of the fee to be
charged the bantam girls' ball
team for use of the the diamond
was broached by McKinlay.
RAP agreed to charge them a
maximum of $100 for the season,
but this,,will be matched by a
grant of up. to S100 from RAP, so
in effect the girls will be ,getting
free use of the facility. ,
"We have to get the the
younger players started,"
commented Derry Boyle.
In a report on the Victoria Park
wading pool, arena manager
Alvin Willert predicted the
facility would have to be closed
when sewers are installed
because ,of the debris being
tossed into the pool,
To date, he has cleaned out
