Phone 235.0660 Royals get even split, games go extra innings Thompsora•Warner Motors The Exeter Royals broke even in two Southwestern Fastball Association games this week, The Royals scored four times in the eighth inning Tuesday night to post an 8-4 victory over Huron Park Albatross after losing 4.2 to the Lucan Irish Thursday night in 12 innings. In Tuesday's contest, the Albatross scored three times in the second inning on a pair of doubles and two throwing errors by Exeter. The score remained at 3-0 until the Exeter fifth when Ron Bogart doubled and Doug Pearson slammed a home run. The Albatross added a single run in the fifth. In the sixth the Royals narrowed the margin to a single run as Scott Burton tripled and Jim Pfaff tripled. The Royals tied the score in the seventh on Doug Pearson's double and singles from the bats of Bob George and Ray Lumsden to send the game into overtime. Brian Hodgins led off the first overtime inning for Exeter with a single and before the rally was over Ron Bogart, Doug Pearson and Bob George delivered singles and Ray Lumsden doubled. Royals hurler Brian Hodgins set the Albatross down in order in the bottom of the eighth. He allowed six hits over the entire route and picked up nine strikeouts, Don Appleby and Gord Mauer shared pitching duties for Huron Park. The first home game of the Exeter Royals in the South- western Fastball Association proved to be an exciting one despite the fact the home team was on the losing end of the score, The Lucan Irish battled back from an early game deficit to score two runs in the top of the twelfth inning to post a 4-2 victory at Exeter Community park Thursday night, The Royals started off in royal style in the first inning Thursday with two runs but from then on Brian Lightfoot on the mound for Lucan shut the door completely. Doug Pearson singled and Ray Lumsden rapped a double to put two runners in scoring position and Scott Burton promptly singled up the middle and the two Exeter runners were home. In the third inning, the Irish battled back with a pair of runs to square the score. Rusty Smith started things rolling with a triple, Dennis Burt doubled and Gerry Finkbeiner cracked out a single and the score was tied at 2- 2, For the next eight innings Bob George pitching for Exeter and Lucan's Brian Lightfoot set the opposition down without a score. In the twelfth singles by Dennis Carty and Leo Dewan along with a couple of Exeter throwing errors gave the Irish the margin of victory. Ray Lumsden led the Royals at the plate with a pair of singles to go with his first inning two- badger. Jim Rolph was next in line with a pair of singles. Bob George and Ron Bogart added singles and Randy Decker blasted a -triple, Bob George went the distance on the hill for the Royals, giving up an even dozen hits while fanning 15 Irish batters. Opposing pitcher Brian Lightfoot struck out 10 batters and gave up the same number of hits. The Royals will be at home for their next two scheduled games. They play host to Bryanston tonight, Thursday and Poplar Hill will be in town for a Sunday night contest. Reaction on rec centre More than six thousand questionnaires are being distributed next week by members of the Exeter com- mittee proposing a recreation centre, Committee chairman John Stephens and publicity chairman' Doug Ellison announced that the forms will be sent out as inserts in the June 5 issue of the T-A and will be sent home with students from South Huron District High School and all elementary schools in Exeter and surroun- ding areas. They 'will be available at seven area stores. The replies may be returned to the school or left at the Well-Come Inn in Exeter or the following stores. Darlings IGA and A&H Food Markets in Exeter, Al's Super- save in Hensall; Shaw's Dairy Store in Zurich, Betty and Art's IGA, Grand Bend; Chandler's Grocery Dashwood and Clover Farm Market at Huron Park. Replies should be returned as soon as possible. It is not necessary that names be signed to the questionnaire. Publicity chairman Doug Ellison in charge of the com- mittee's bus trip to the Tillson- burg complex on June 18 is asking that all service groups and councils invited to attend reply their intentions immediately. When a woman wants her husband to start a garden, the first thing he usually digs up is a good excuse, The entire executive of the Exeter Minor Hockey Association was re-elected at the annual meeting attended by 17 enthusiasts, Thursday, They are Ron Horn, president; Ron Bogart, vice- president; Wayne Pearce, treasurer; and Bill Batten, secretary. Information was received at the meeting that all players registering with the Ontario Minor Hockey Association and the Ontario Hockey Association will have to have social insurance numbers for the coming season. It was decided to send a letter to all players advising them of this situation and urging them to register as soon as possible to avoid the rush when the 400,000 Canadian minor players register for social insurance numbers in the fall. Forms for the boys to fill out will be included in the mailing. The EMHA also decided to extend their fall training program to'include players of all age levels. Last year's program for novice and atom players was termed highly successful. The ice sessions will be held at Huron Park in September and October, Information will be sent to all registered players in the EMHA. It was also agreed at the meeting to join the Exeter Legion in staging a 50-50 draw. Proceeds will be used to purchase hockey jackets for this year's bantam team which won the Ontario "B" championship, A banquet for the champs is scheduled for June 25 and a star from the NHL is being sought as guest speaker for the function, Date of the EMHIA golf tournament has been set for June 21 at the Exeter Golf Course. The election of officers at the annual meeting was, conducted by a former president, Reeve Derry Boyle, He took the occasion to thank the EMHA for honoring him with a plaque in recognition of his 30 years' service to minor sports in Exeter. "You overwhelmed me," he said, in reference to the fact he had been unable to come up with any words to express his full appreciation at the time of the presentation at the Junior Hawk banquet. "You guys don't have any idea of the feeling that came over me and it is something (the award) that I will always treasure. "It's the best thing that ever happened to me . except meeting my wife," he concluded, Motorcyclists at Hully Gully • More than 1,000 spectators watched the exciting Di-Jer International motorcross second series of motorcycle racing at Hully Gully Sunday. The final in this series is scheduled for June 8. This weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 29 and 30 and June 1, the Western Ontario Moticross school will be held at Holly Gully. This week the local clubs broke even with two victories and the same number of losses in four starts. The mosquitoes downed Hayfield 4-1 and the squirts came up with a 5-0 shutout over Clinton. On the other side of the ledger the pee wees and atoms lost to Seaforth by identical scores of 10- 0. Centre forward Scott Lovie led the :Exeter squirts scoring attack with a three goal performance. Adding single scores were inside left Steve Gould and inside right Jeff Pfaff, Dennis Eisenschink was the Exeter goal keeper earning the shutout. Coach Dave Silcock reported his boys turned in an excellent effort. Coach Ron Helm of the mosquitoes said his club turned in a good all round effort in defeating Hayfield 4-1, Peter Parsons, took care of all of the scoring with a four goal effort. The two losing coaches, Damian Solomon of the atoms and Dave Zyluk of the pee wees predict marked improvement in upcoming games.
