The Exeter Royals broke even
in two Southwestern Fastball
Association games this week,
The Royals scored four times in
the eighth inning Tuesday night
to post an 8-4 victory over Huron
Park Albatross after losing 4.2 to
the Lucan Irish Thursday night in
12 innings.
In Tuesday's contest, the
Albatross scored three times in
the second inning on a pair of
doubles and two throwing errors
by Exeter.
The score remained at 3-0 until
the Exeter fifth when Ron Bogart
doubled and Doug Pearson
slammed a home run.
The Albatross added a single
run in the fifth. In the sixth the
Royals narrowed the margin to a
single run as Scott Burton tripled
and Jim Pfaff tripled.
The Royals tied the score in the
seventh on Doug Pearson's
double and singles from the bats
of Bob George and Ray Lumsden
to send the game into overtime.
Brian Hodgins led off the first
overtime inning for Exeter with
a single and before the rally was
over Ron Bogart, Doug Pearson
and Bob George delivered singles
and Ray Lumsden doubled.
Royals hurler Brian Hodgins
set the Albatross down in order in
the bottom of the eighth. He
allowed six hits over the entire
route and picked up nine
strikeouts,
Don Appleby and Gord Mauer
shared pitching duties for Huron
Park.
The first home game of the
Exeter Royals in the South-
western Fastball Association
proved to be an exciting one
despite the fact the home team
was on the losing end of the score,
The Lucan Irish battled back
from an early game deficit to
score two runs in the top of the
twelfth inning to post a 4-2 victory
at Exeter Community park
Thursday night,
The Royals started off in royal
style in the first inning Thursday
with two runs but from then on
Brian Lightfoot on the mound for
Lucan shut the door completely.
Doug Pearson singled and Ray
Lumsden rapped a double to put
two runners in scoring position
and Scott Burton promptly
singled up the middle and the two
Exeter runners were home.
In the third inning, the Irish
battled back with a pair of runs to
square the score. Rusty Smith
started things rolling with a
triple, Dennis Burt doubled and
Gerry Finkbeiner cracked out a
single and the score was tied at 2-
2,
For the next eight innings Bob
George pitching for Exeter and
Lucan's Brian Lightfoot set the
opposition down without a score.
In the twelfth singles by
Dennis Carty and Leo Dewan
along with a couple of Exeter
throwing errors gave the Irish
the margin of victory.
Ray Lumsden led the Royals at
the plate with a pair of singles to
go with his first inning two-
badger. Jim Rolph was next in
line with a pair of singles. Bob
George and Ron Bogart added
singles and Randy Decker
blasted a -triple,
Bob George went the distance
on the hill for the Royals, giving
up an even dozen hits while
fanning 15 Irish batters.
Opposing pitcher Brian Lightfoot
struck out 10 batters and gave up
the same number of hits.
The Royals will be at home for
their next two scheduled games.
They play host to Bryanston
tonight, Thursday and Poplar
Hill will be in town for a Sunday
night contest.
