First Canadian foal
The first Canadian born son of
Riva Ridge, the 1972 Kentucky
Derby winner saw the first light
of day at Smiling Acres farm
near Hensall Monday.
Brian Smillie owner of Smiling
Son of Riva Ridge arrives at
Acres said Tuesday, "It's an
excellent foal and a stud colt.
That's what we were hoping for,
It may be a bit small but it has
lots of room to grow." The colt
was born to Bold Chelan, a mare,
Hensall
owned by Smillie and Don Gaiser,
Dashwood. Bold Chelan is a
stakes placed niece of
Secretariat, winner of the 1973
Kentucky Derby.
The Riva Ridge colt will be
raised at the Hensall area farm
and will likely be offered for sale
at the yearling sales in 1976 in
Keeneland or Saratoga.
Two other mares are still to
foal for Smiling Acres. One is
Arcain in foal to Mito. Her father
is Court Marshall, one of
England's leading sires.
The other mare is Gallant
Angel. She is bred to Bold and
Brave, a son of Bold Ruler.
Among the seven foals recently
born is an Irish Castle colt, a half
brother to Huron King who raced
for Smillie for a couple of years.
Several of the new colts are
owned jointly by Smillie and Don
Gaiser.
A new barn measuring 50 by 65
feet has recently been built on the
Hensall farm. It includes 14 box
stalls to house the yearlings. New
paddocks are also being com-
pleted.
Five mares have just recently
been shipped to Kentucky for
breeding purposes. One is
Skara's Native . She is going to
the court of Buckpasser. Angel
Daingel is being sent to Riva
Ridge. They are Smillie-Gaiser
owned.
Nadisque, a stakes producing
mare will be bred to Bold Bidder,
a fading world sire 1974 and
Spare Chain, dam of four stake
horses *ill be bred to Majestic
Prince, winner of the Kentucky
Derby in 1969.
HeiDon't,Care whdwon his first
start of, the year at Thistledown,
the Cardinal Stakes by 11 lengths
is a Spare Chain colt.
Bold Chelan will be sent to the
United States again and be bred
to Crimson Satan, champion two
year old and winner of $893,000.
Monday, Larry Ensor of
'Maryland, a representative of
Fasig-Tipton, the largest
thoroughbred sales agency in
North America was in Hensall
'inspecting 14 yearlings for the
yearling sales coming up in
September.
Five of the yearlings are owned
outright by Smiling Acres, four
are in partnership with Don
Gaiser, three are being handled
by Smillie as agent for Gaiser,
one as an agent for Bob Mac-
Naughton and the other is owned
by Smillie's wife, Judy,
Judy Smillie is the owner of
three horses on the Hensall farm.
She has the mare Ermine Sox
who gave birth to a filly a week
ago and an Arabian horse named
Son Risa.
Son Risa (which is sound of
laughter in Spanish) will be
shown on the line by Judy at local
Arabian shows to gain some
experience.
The Ermine Sox filly willlikely
be, placed at the yearling sales. A
new racing stable is being, formed
by Judy Smillie in partnership
with Bobby Bruce, a Toronto
based trainer. It will be known as
JS & B Stables.
While Brian Smillie operates on
his own as far as breeding goes on
the ilensall farm he is in part-
nership with Dr. Paul Brady in
the operation of Huron Racing
Stables.
The partnership now has four
horses stabled at Fort Erie and
will be racing at Woodbine in
