Appetites of area youngsters
are not "what they used to be" if
the performances of more than
100 boys and girls at Monday's
Exeter minor bowling banquet is
any indication,
The honour of winning the
"biggest eater" title went to
Bruce Anderson, captain of the
champion junior boys and girls
Spitfires.
Bruce was able to down only six
hot dogs. In previous years the
total has been as high as a dozen,
A year ago Steve Pearce and
Steve Boltzmann each consumed
eight hot dogs.
What they lacked in appetites
the youthful bowlers made up in
noise as they literally raised the
roof of the Exeter Legion hall,
Ruth Durand who this year
celebrates her 20th anniversary
as head of the minor bowling
program was master of
ceremonies. A goodly number of
mothers were on hand to take
care of the kitchen chores. The
kitchen staff was headed by
Doreen Kirk and Peg Hunter-
Duvar.
Trophy presentations were
varied and ranged from team
awards to individual honours to
the youngsters showing the most
improvement during the year.
Those achieving perfect at-
tendance were also honoured.
The minor bowlers attending
each and ever session were:

FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Haugh
Surprises
The performance of the Detroit Tigers in the early
going in the American baseball league has to be surprising
to all supporters of the team.
We watched parts of Tiger games over the weekend and
one commentator said the club is surprising everyone but
manager Ralph Houk.
Houk maintained throughout spring training that he had
pennant possibilities, Granted 14 or 15 games are far from a
complete season, but it's important for any team to get off
to a good start,
The Tigers are getting great efforts again from ace
southpaw reliever John Hiller. This year appears to be get-
ting some more assistance in the bullpen from Tom Walker.
The latter came to the Tigers late last year from the Mon-
treal Expos and has been successful with a good curve ball.
Ron Le Flore who appears to be the fastest Tiger on the
base paths going back as far as the days of Ty Cobb is also
helping with the bat having three home runs to date.
In Sunday's win over Boston Le Flore went from first to
third on a short single and announcer George Kell said
there are probably only two or three others in the league
able to do the same thing.
Willie Horton has been Houk's choice so far as the
Detroit designated hitter and he has come through in the
clutches to cinch a couple of victories.
One of the Tiger pitching mainstays this year is ex-
pected to be Darren La Grow. This youngster is a firm
believer of the three C's.
The three words posted over La Grow's locker are con-
centration, control and cool. Three pretty good ingredients
on the way to a successful career.
'Twas a cold day
Picked up an interesting comment while listening to the
Tiger game via radio on Sunday, April 20.
Can't remember whether it was Ernie Harwell or Paul
Corey who was keeping listeners up to date on scores of
other games.
He said the Expos game in Montreal was postponed
because of cold weather. His comment was, "Now, it's a
chilly six degrees in Montreal."
It will probably take our friends to the south a little
time to realize Canadian temperatures are now being
reported in Celsius. He was right. Six degrees in Fahrenheit
would be a little chilly for baseball.
Area baseball, too
While the NHL playoffs are capturing most sport
interest, plans are being quickly formulated for district ball
activities.
Exeter's rec director Jim McKinlay has called a
meeting tonight, Thursday at the Exeter public school
library for men of all ages interested in playing ball.
McKinlay is attempting to form a rec fastball league.
For those past the age of 30, slo-pitch is a possibility.
If enough teams can't be formed for a complete local
slo-pitch league, one or two teams may be entered in a
similar loop in Usborne township.
The Huron-Perth intermediate baseball league is also
set for another season. A meeting will be held at the Exeter
Legion hall Tuesday night to draw up the 1975 schedule..
The same six teams will be back in action. Competing
will be the Exeter Mohawks, Dashwood Tigers, Zurich
Mets, Thorndale, Arva and Clinton.
Management of the Exeter and Dashwood clubs have
called meetings and practices for Sunday afternoon at two
o'clock.
Any new players wishing to try out with the Exeter Ex-
pos are asked to get in touch with Terry Bourne or Jim
Pfaff. The contact men at DaShwood are George Tiernan
and Jack Schade.
New junior club
We had a visit this week from the chief scout from the
new Windsor Spitfires junior hockey club which makes its
debut in the OHA Major series next fall.
He is John Ryan of London. We first met Ryan a few
years ago when he was a scout for Hap Emms at Niagara
Falls and at that time two Exeter junior Hawks John
Hayter and Peter Kleinstiver attended a fall training camp.
Ryan tells us that interest in Windsor for the new club
is very high with season ticket sales already in excess of 1,-
000.
The Windsor coach will be Doug Johnston currently
handling the Oakville Blades who are in the thick of a
playoff battle in OHA junior "B" ranks.
According to Ryan the Windsor team will be a young
one. He said they will be relying mainly on over age midget
players.
MOST IMPROVED BOWLERS — Special awards were presented fo
the most improved bowlers in the Exeter minor bowling league at Mon-
day's annual banquet, Back, left, Greg Peitsch, Bob Bies and Cathy
Triebner, Front, Sheri Varley, Jack VerMatin and Pauline De Vries.
