E. SUMMERS The worst April fool's joke to be played on the Village of Granton and area, was Wednesday's ice and snow storm. The blackout of power lasted until Friday noon. Fortunate were those people that had fireplaces or other forms of substitute heat. It is at a time such as this, that true neighborliness is shown. Those without heat were welcomed to the homes of those who had. Anglican Church At the Anlican church Rev. R.N. Savary adminstered Holy Communion and based his ser- mon on the Gospel of St. John: 20. Flowers were placed in the church in meory of Mrs. James Bryan, Morning Prayer will be observed next Sunday at 9:30 a.m United Church At the United Church the at- tendance was good, in spite of road conditions, owing to the recent storm. As it was Daffodil Sunday, the bulletins with the "Cancer can be Beaten" inserts were used. Rev, Mary McInally's sermon was entitled "The Way" and was taken from the Gosepl of St. John 14:6 Flowers in the church were placed there in memory of Mrs, James Bryan. UCW news 4.Jriit,-3.•met at the home (*Mrs. Douglas Tuttle on Wednesday April 2. Mrs. E. Summers presided and led in worship. The meeting opened with the singing of the hymn "Rejoice the Lord is King" followed, by the scripture Matt. 28: 1-10. "Joy" was the subject of the lesson, Business discussion dealt with plans for the program and lunch for the general meeting. Rev. McInally reported that Rev. Anne (Graham) Langford had consented to be the guest speaker that evening.: Mrs. Glen Jameson reported that the ladies of both rp• MAIN ST. EXETER tne Anglican and Wesley United Church had been invited to join with Granton for this meeting. Mrs, Summers read a short story from the Easter Ideals "Awakening". The program was in charge of Mrs. D. Tuttle and Mrs. Robt. Hardie.Mrs Tuttle gave a reading "April's Child". Mrs. Hardie led in Bible Study. Mrs. Tuttle ended the program with a humorous reading "OK Grownups move over." As April is the month of the annual cancer campaign, Mrs. Summers, who is chairman of education for the Lucan Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society, gave a talk on Cancer Education. A lunch was prepared and sent to the meeting by Mrs. Earle Middleton, who was unable to attend because of sickness in the home. The hostess was assisted by Mrs. G. Jameson. Unit 3 met at the home of Mrs. Lloyd Mardlin on Tuesday April 2 . Mrs. James Riddell presided and opened the meeting, followed by a reading by Mrs. Mardlin. Plans were discussed on fund raising to meet the year's allocation. Members were reminded of the generdl meeting on Tuesday. Guest speaker was Mrs. Elmer Summers, chairman of education for Lucan branch of the Canadian Cancer Society. Pamphlets were distributed to the members on all forms of Cancer. Lunch was served by the hostess and conveners, Mrs. Harold Mills and Mrs. William Thompson. Supper at Anglican Church On April 1 a supper was held in the church hall, called an April fool's- supper. Following the supper the remainder of the evening was spent playing progressive euchre. Prize winners were, for the ladies:- high score, Mrs. Gordon Mitchell; low score, Mrs. Ross Langford; and for the men .high score, Gordon Mit- chell"; low score, Harold Wallis; lone hands, lady or gentlemen, Mrs. Austin Hobbs. Yeasterners still rolling On Saturday March 29 the fourth meeting of the 4-H Yeasterners club was held at the home of the leader Mrs. Jim Hodgins. Wendy Kloss was secretary for this meeting. Mrs. Hodgins had made basic roll dough earlier and had it ready for the girls to punch and roll again. Diane Cook did this and then let the dough rest for 10 minutes. Leader Mrs. Michael O'Shea discussed the "Canada Food Guide". then the members for- lied groups, to make rolls, some .xperimented with spices for flavoring and others with diferent shapes. The roll call was answered with a label from a convenience food. Achievement Day was discussed and Wendy Kloss, Dorothy Garrett, and Gwen Hodgins volunteered to do the demonstrations. When the rolls were baked the girls enjoyed them for a snack. The meeting closed with the 4-H pledge. Diane Cook was ap- pointed secretary for the next meeting which will be at the home of Mrs. O'Shea on Thur- sday April 10 at 6:30 p.m. Personals Mr. & Mrs. William Lambert have returned from a vacation in Florida. Mabel McNaughton has returned from spending a few days with relatives in Mississauga, where she attended her great nephew's wedding. Mrs. Fred Crouch, Mrs. Kenneth Hodgins, and Mrs. Lois Herbert visited Reta Clatworthy and Mrs. Harold Wallis who are both recovering in St. Mary's Memorial Hospital. Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Lewis visited Mrs. H.E. Coion at the Sun Haven Nursing Home near Delaware recently. Guests of Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Hodgins during the power blackout were Mrs. Jim Harding, Mellissa, Kent, Katherine and Cassandra (Sam). Mrs. Donald Roloson, Mrs. Joe Pecko, Mrs. Gordon Dann and Mrs. Clarence Lewis visited Reta Clatworthy on her birthday while she was a patient in St. Mary's Memorial Hospital. Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Langford of Woodham were Easter Sunday dinner guests of Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Hodgins, Mrs. Lois Confirmation at Mt. Carmel Many relatives and friends and parents attended the con- firmation exercises given by Bishop. John Sherlock- and his assistant Father James Mockler last Monday, April 7 in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. The attending clergy as. guests of Fr, John Mooney, PP, were Father J. • C. Car vanr1.4 PP, Parkhill; and Father John f3ensette, PP, St. Joseph's Ontario. The youth formed their own choir singing four hymns. Personals Mary Theresa McCann, London, visited over the weekend with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Arnold McCann and family. Louis Dietrich and John Campbell have arrived home after many weeks in Florida to be greeted by an early spring blizzard. Sister Mary, Ryan, Windsor and Sister Margaret Hogan, Chatham visited with their relatives on Monday and attended o the Sacrament of Confirmation in the evening, On Sunday, April 6, Grade 2 class consisting of 36 children made their first communion at morning masses. Anne and Angela Regier, London visited over the weekend with their parents, Mr, & Mrs. Joe Regier Sr., Dashwood. Mrs. Stan Loos, Sarnia visited over the weekend with her brother, Mr. & Mrs. Pat Sullivan and girls. The April CWL meeting was held in Mt, Carmel School gym after Tuesday evening mass with a large crowd in attendance. Mrs. Gregory Fleming president was in charge. Rev. Father C. Spencer, London who is Diocesan Director of CWL was guest speaker for the meeting, assisted by Fr. John Mooney, PP. After a talk to the ladies Fr. Spencer assisted in installing the new slate of officers for coming year. They are: past president, Mrs. Jean Fleming; president, Mrs. Paula Van Osch; first vice- president, Mrs. Nell McCann; second vice-president, Mrs. Rita Winters; third vice-president, Mrs, Mary Muller; correspon- ding secretary, Mrs. Joanne Steffens; record secretary, Mrs. Mary Koricina; treasurer, Mrs, Marion Sullivan.
