necessary on the south side of
Sanders to accommodate the
trees on the west side,
It is likely, however, that some
of the trees will be damaged by
the re-construction and may
eventually have to be destroyed,
With the fact that some doubt
does exist, they will, hopefully
\remain standing until they die.
II! The good word is that a ruling
of council can be challenged and
that council, as a body, is
receptive and responsive to
reasonable arguments presented
against a decision made by it. All
of us appreciate the enthusiasm
and interest shown by any group
of citizens in any cause it might
have.
We can't always guarantee a
sol 'on that is satisfactory to all
co erned, but we can guarantee
a • it hearing. Keep it up!

BY BRUCE SHAW
In last week's article, I men-
tioned that there were two
problems that sparked my in-
terest and prompted this column.
The first as I outlined, was the
controversy surrounding the
police, The second centres on the
Andrew Street trees.
The public works committee
under the chairmanship of Ted
Wright examined the situation
very carefully and recommended
to council that the 10 trees on the
boulevards between Sanders and
James streets would have to
come down (not all this year, but
all eventually).

1) the road must be constructed
properly and with future use in
mind (a) parking facilities would
be required since the street is
really part of the 'core area' and
(b) an alternative thoroughfare
similar to William St. to handle
traffic congestion on Main St.
2) the trees that are obviously
in the way must be 'given the

3) the root systems of many of
other trees will undoubtedly
damaged permanently,
4) the town's replacement
program for trees will be put into

„/The delegation and the
''''Petitions that reached council
were not ignored. The delegation
was promised a review, and a
notification of council's actions
would be sent to all the residents
concerned,
On Wednesday afternoon
following the presentation made
to council, our engineers were in
town, We again examined the
street very carefully, and the
engineer gave us a very en-
couraging, although tentative
report: only the trees on the east
side of Andrew between Sanders
and John would have to be
removed.
That means three trees would
have to go!
A positive statement will be in
our hands by the time this article
's printed, but it would appear
at for the moment, Andrew St,
ill be virtually unchanged as far
s the trees are concerned.
A slight jog in the street may be
