I work in a retail store as a cashier, On Fridays we are
frequently very busy, and I don't always have time to
count up the cash when I take over from the other
cashier at 4:30. Last Friday when we finally counted up
the cash, there was one of those new $1 bills in the $20
pile, and the cash was about $19 short. Obviously
someone made a mistake and gave change for a twenty
off a $1 bill.
We don't know whether it was me or the other
cashier who made the mistake. My boss wants to take
half the shortage off each of our cheques.
Since I'm leaving anyway I made a stink about it.
Was I within my rights?
Yes. The law in Ontario is that "No deduction shall be
made from the wages of an employee for cash shortages
where two or more persons have access to the cash . . .", un-
der a regulation pursuant to the Employment Standards Act.

In June of 73, I was involved in a car accident.
Everything ha 'ened so fast, I really don't know who
was to blame she damage to my car was so minimal, I
didn't even g' it fixed. I heard nothing more from the
other driver a 1•1 gradually forgot about it.
A few da ,;;ago I received a letter from an insurance
company st ,ng that the accident was my fault and
that I was '-ing to be sued for damages. Everything
happened long ago, I can't remember the details.
What can I ? I'm really worried sick about this.
Sure is a stery to us here at "IMPACT" as to why the in-
surance co • any waited so long to send you a letter, but
because th did, you have nothing to worry about, as Sec-
tion 146 0 he Highway Traffic Act imposes a limit of twelve
months in ,ringing a suit as a result of an auto accident. In
that, mor hen twelve months has elapsed since the accident,
you can't e sued for damages even if you were at fault.
Reply the letter, pointing out section 146 and the twelve-
month I Nation period it imposes.
