.FOR ALL .GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Hiugh
Getting
stronger
A slow start and a strong finish seems to be the method
being used by coach Terry Bourne of the Exeter junior
Hawks.
The. Hawks off to a very slow beginning have been
showing plentyof promise in the last three weeks and have
come up with six victories and a tie in their last seven
starts,
The main reason for the excellent showing by the
Hawks in recent games has been the outstanding goal ten-
ding by Randy Lovie.
The Grand Bend area youngster has been providing
coach Bourne and the Hawks with the steady puck stopping
which is necessary in putting together a good hockey team,
regardless of the category or calibre of play.
The Hawks are now in sixth place in the league stan-
dings and appear to be: ready to make a good run in the
playoffs.
More top guests
The latest announcement on head table guests at the
February 4 Sportsmen's Dinner sponsored by the Exeter
Lions club should make the event a tremendous success.
Fred Shero, coach of the Stanley Cup champion
Philadelphia Flyers has agreed to attend the Tuesday night
banquet. Travel arrangements have been made to allow
Shero to get back to New York for a game the following
night.
The appearance of Mike Jorgensen of the Montreal Ex-
pos has also been confirmed and Ailsa Craig auto race
driver Earl Ross is almost a sure thing.
Add fellows like Shelley Goudreau, Tuffy Knight, Ken
Doig, Russ Evon, George Parkes, Glenn Weir, Mike Widger
and Ron Leflore, to the main speaker Jack Donohue and an
excellent evening of entertainment is assured.
Completing the list is Whipper Bill Watson and the
National Timmy.
Tickets which sell for $25 are now available from all
Lions Club members and various other outlets. Not only
will your contribution go the the very worthwhile cause of
crippled kids but personal enjoyment derived should be un-
definable.
• After weekend play in the Senior Continental league the
standings:provide some interesting information.
Only eight points separate the fifth place Durham
Huskies 'from. the leading Lucan-Ilderton Jets. The race is
much closer when one looks at the goals against records for
the same five teams.
The goalies of the Durham Huskies have allowed 91
goals in 22 games while the goals against record of the Jets
and the Preston Jesters is 92 goals, also for 22 games.
Then come the Stratford Perths and London Kings with
93 goals against each in 21 games.
In the goals scored department the L-I Jets lead with
130, four more than the Preston club.
Jets are flying •
The Lucan-Ilderton Jets enjoying an excellent season to
date have finally moved up to take over first place in the
Ontario Hockey Association Continental Senior league.
The Jets will get plenty of opposition from the Stratford
Perths and London Kings in their attempt to win the league
championship. Also, don't overlook the Durham Huskies.
The club from Durham, known for playing a rough, tough
brand of hockey are usually heard from when playoff time
rolls around.
The weekly Continental league statistics from Nick
Martin of Woodstock lists the Durham Huskies as the only
team in the league to get two ties in one year. In fact, there
have been only four draws since the league first started in
the fall of 1973.
Winter Games news
The. recently concluded Ontario Winter Games in
Thunder Bay were a huge success according to an Exeter
man who was part of the three day event.
Exeter recreation director Jim McKinlay travelled to
Thunder Bay to act as a basketball referee and handled a
total of six games.
McKinlay tells us Bob Secord, director of the Ontario
Sports and Recreation bureau announced the games, both
winter and summer would now become annual affairs.
The local rec director said it was a pleasant surprise to
find the Ontario Games were back using the original Olym-
pic theme which combined athletics and culture.
The Ontario Science Centre set up a display in one of
the heavy travelled areas of the sports facilities and many
displays of crafts such as weaving, carving and art work
were very prevalent.
As a result of the Games at Thunder Bay, an Ontario
team of 235 athletes will be participating in the Canada
Winter Games in Lethbridge from February 10 to 24.
In future years, the Ontario Games will be scheduled at
a different time of the year to allow for more training and
preparation for Canada Games.
