Huron Park minor teams busy,,, Parkettes lose tilt to .Lucan Plan complex • This is our first column for the year 1975 and we would like to take a quick look at what could happen in the spor- ting world not only locally, but nationally and international- ly, One of the most important subjects on the local front is planning on the proposed recreational complex. When first talked about it was called a sports complex but this is sort of misleading as a centre of such magnitude would cover the complete segment of recreation and fulfill the needs of leisure time for persons of all ages. The committee in charge of planning has called a meeting for Tuesday, January 14 at the Exeter Public School library at 8 p.m. An article elsewhere in this issue tells about the up- coming meeting and the hopes of the group in receiving reaction and input from the public. The first reaction wanted by the committee is on proposed sites. Anyone whether for or against the project or any site is urged to attend the meeting and voice their views. John Stephens of town has been named chairman of the recreation complex committee. In our opinion this was an excellent choice. John is head of the agricultural business management division at Centralia Agricultural College and has 10 years experience with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture in Guelph and Toronto, New seniors quarters One of the busiest groups in 1975 will be the senior citizens of Exeter and district. Thanks to a couple of government grants under the New Horizons program, two facilities are being renovated and updated for use by the area's seniors, The clubhouse at the Exeter lawn bowling club is being enlarged and renovated for all year-round use. In addition to accommodating bowlers in the summer months, the rooms will now be used for card playing and other recreation ac- tivities throughout the year. The latest grant of $8,000 is being used on the Exeter Lions Scout House on John Street west. In addition to some renovations, the monies will be used to purchase equipment and supplies. The former Scout house will be called Well-Come Inn. Exeter Rec director Jim McKinlay who has been very in- strumental in the seniors activities said he hopes the program at Well-Come Inn will be self sustaining in about a year and a half. The building will be equipped with a refrigerator, card tables, chairs and craft facilties. It is expected the ladies will be setting up quilting frames to follow a favorite hobby, Murray Neil is president of the Exeter Senior Citizens. Bigger and better playground In his first full summer here as recreation director, Jirri,McKinlay hopes to expand several other programs. He expects to spend a lot of time in enlarging and improving The summer playground program. During the last couple of years the senior playground program at Exeter Community park has been running on a small scale while the younger fry have enjoyed the park and wading pool facilities at Victoria park on Huron Street west. McKinlay hopes to make the sites more conducive to children and enlarge the activities. Continuing, McKinlay commented, "we won't have too many changes at the swimming pool, but we hope to successfully defend the swimming championship we won last year." Roller skating which proved to be very successful on a limited basis during the late summer months of 1974 will be extended to the full summer season. There is a distinct possibility of the introduction locally of the sport of lacrosse. Interest in tennis should also in- crease sharply with the construction of new courts near the high school and Exeter Public School. McKinlay said he expects to spend a goodly amount of time on planning co-operative recreation programs with neighbouring townships. More sports celebrities One of the early highlights of 1975 locally will be the second annual Exeter Lions club Sportsmen's dinner. Lloyd Ross, Murray Moore, Frank Giffin and many other Lions club members have been working hard in lining up an attractive lineup of speakers. The headline speaker is Jack Donohue, coach of Canada's National basketball team. He will be ably sup- ported by harness horse driver Shelley Goudreau, Ron Lenore of the Detroit Tigers, golfer Ken Doig, Montreal Alouettes Glen Weir and Mike Widger, Tuffy Knight of Wilfred Laurier University, curler George Parkes and former top fastball hurler Russ Evon. Add to this the presence of crippled kids greatest friend Whipper Billy Watson and the master of ceremonies Bruce Murray of St. Marys, who is a tremendous after dinner speaker in his own right. In addition to a goodly number of confirmed guests are the possibilities of having Fred Shero, Earl Ross and Mike Jorgenson also in attendance. Correction Charlie Sims of Crediton is one of the most enthusiastic fishermen in the area and he ended the year 1974 with two good catches in the Nine Mile River at Port Albert on December 29. A picture of Charlie and his two big rainbow trout appeared on the front page of the December 31 issue but the weights Were incorrect. The trout weighed 10 and six pounds instead of 10 and 16 pounds. Sorry Charlie. Made for a good fish story, though. A worthy honour It was very gratifying to hear that Ken Doig of Seaforth placed third in the voting for the best golfer of the year 1974 in the province of Ontario. Ken enjoyed one of his better years on the golf links and represented Ontario in the Canadian Amateur at Winnipeg and was chosen as one of four Canadians to compete in International competition in the fall. Doig was surpassed only by Gary Cowan of Kitchener and Kelly Roberts of London as the top amateur and professional golfers in the province. The Exeter Hawks gained three of four possible points in Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D" action this week. The Hawks were held to a 7-7 tie Friday night by the Strathroy Falcons but they came roaring back Tuesday in Seaforth to blank the Seaforth Centenaires 7- 0. In exhibition play, Saturday the Hawks scored an 8-3 victory over the Tri-County juniors from Mt. Brydges. Three outings await the Hawks in the coming week. Friday night they will be at home to the Lambeth Flyers and Sunday afternoon they travel to Lucan to meet the Irish in a 2 p.m. contest. The next home start for the Hawks will then be Wednesday, January 15,when the Port Stanley Lions will be in town. Gerald Weido and captain Harry Smits scored two goals each and Randy Lovie turned in a shutout performance to lead Exeter's 7-0 Tuesday win over Seaforth, The Hawks took a 2-0 first period lead on an'unassisted goal by Steve Jennison and a score by Harry Smits on a play started by Matt Muller and Gerald Weido. The only Hawks score in the middle frame was fired by Matt Muller with assists going to Noel Skinner and Harry Smits. In the third period, Gerald Weido scored twice, one unassisted and the other on a pass frOrri Harry Smits. Smits completed' his double scoring on passes from Noel Skinner and Rick Mornrneriteeg and Steve Schroeder tallied with passing help coming from Kevin B estard. A goal by Brian Taylor with less than three minutes left The Hawks scored three goals in the first half of the second period to move in front 5-2. Captain Harry Smits scored unassisted; Steve Schroeder hit the mark with passing help from Bill Van Bergen and Rick Mommersteeg and Brian Taylor converted passes from Harry Smits and Steve Jennison. Strathroy bounced right back on goals by Dave Scott, Pete Varga and Dave Beselaere. The Hawks moved ahead 6-5 at 3:21 of the third period on a successful shot by Rick Ingram. The assist went to Wayne Regier. Strathroy then took the lead back on goals from Mark Prangley and Pete Varga to the stage for Brian Taylor's tying goal. Kevin Bestard and Harry Smits assisted. Muller gets hat trick Matt Muller turned in a hat trick performance to lead the Hawks 8-3 exhibition win over Mt. Brydges. The balance of the' Exeter scoring was shared by five performers. Getting one goal apiece were Noel Skinner, Brian Taylor, Gord Pryde, Kevin Bestard and Harry Smits, Gord Pryde was best in the assist department with three and Donnie McKellarand Matt Muller each helped on two goals.
