Tourney
a success
The fifth annual novice hockey tournament held at the
Exeter arena the two days following Christmas was an un-
qualified success.
Exeter Minor Hockey Association president Ron Horn,
his assistant George Pratt and many other volunteers are to
be congratulated on a very successful operation:
We heard many excellent comments from visiting
coaches saying they would be pleased to be invited back
again in 1975.
Most of the teams this year and more will likely be back
as organizers are hoping to enlarge the tournament to three
days and 24 teams.
These boys eight years of age and under are justlear-
ning the basics of hockey and sometimes forget which side
of the blue line they should be to avoid an offside.
But, what they lack in hockey knowledge is more than
made up in hustle and desire. In some instances, at least a
half dozen players may be chasing the puck but they create
plenty of excitment.
We almost said winning is not too important to these
youngsters but this didn't apply to the Exeter Waxers, Fri-
day.
The local novice club won their first game of the season
in downing New Hamburg 3-1 to win the 'C' consolation
championship.
In addition to not being able to win previously, the Wax-
ers had scored very few goals so far this season. The three
goals Friday were the most the youngsters had been able to
score in any'game. So to them, the victory was very impor-
tant.
Ron Horn on behalf of the EMHA has asked us to pass
on sincere thanks to the many willing workers and arena
and booth staff for their excellent co-operation in making
the tournament a success.
Continuing official's career
A product of the Exeter Minor Hockey Association is
now in his second year as a linesman in the World 'Hockey
Association.
Graham Hern spent part of Christmas Day with his
grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Ford of Concession 2 in
Stephen township and we were able to chat with him for
about 15 minutes by telephone.
Graham said attendance this year to date is up 36 per-
cent from a year ago„ This is due mainly to excellent
crowds at all home games in the Canadian division,
Edmonton has a brand new arena and the Oilers have
had three capacity crowds of 15,300 and more than 113,000
fans for their first nine games.
New hockey buildings have been springing up
throughout the United States WHA cities. These include
Houston, St. Paul, Phoenix and Cleveland.
The arena in St. Paul, Minnesota has glass boards
similar to many. European rinks. Graham said the fans can
see the play better but the officials sometimes have trouble
following the puck.
The Quebec Nordiques have been drawing well at home
due mostly to the presence of .fellows like J.C. Tremblay,
Serge Bernier, Marc Tardiff, Chris Bordeleau and Rejean
Houle.
The new arena in Cleveland is one of the best in the
world. Nick Miletti who also owns the Cleveland Indians
baseball team spent 21 million dollars in building the swank
hockey palace.
Graham Hem said he felt the Chicago Cougar franchise
would improve since its purchase by Pat Stapleton, Ralph
Backstrom and Dave Dryden.
The schedule for linesmen in the WHA is fairly heavy
with plenty of travelling. Graham left Exeter Christmas
Day, for a Thursday game in Phoenix. Later in January he
will be doing seven games in as many nights in Detroit,
New England, Chicago and Minnesota.
During the 1973-74 season, Graham officiated in 90
league games and eight contests in the playoffs. After the
season he spent three weeks in Barbados and then took on a
summer job with the Bank of Montreal in St. Catharines.
His Thursday game in Phoenix was the 34th of the
season. Another typical situation is a Friday night game in
San Diego and a Saturday afternoon contest in Vancouver.
The WHA has 19 full time referees and linesmen. In all
cities except Houston, one resident part-time linesman is
used along with full-time fellows like Graham.
