Approve closing
of two streets
Exeter council this week ap-
proved the closing of two streets
which run through the proposed
Darling Subdivision.
They are John St. East and
Bodman St. and they will be clos-
ed at Pryde Boulevard and then
replaced with new streets in the
subdivision.
A judge's order will be re-
quired to officially close the two
streets and the costs involved
will be paid by the subdivider.
The firm designing the sub-
division hope to have final ap-
proval for it by the end of this
year.

A Crediton man, Patrick G.
Van-Kerrebroeck, was fined $200
after being found guilty of a
careless driving charge by Judge
Glenn Hays in Exeter court,
Tuesday.
He had been charged on June 29
in Exeter after Constable Jim
McMeekin saw his car mount the
sidewalk at the north end of
Exeter while proceeding south on
Main St. This performance was
repeated three times and the
driver also swerved abruptly to
miss the side of the bridge.
He was finally stopped and the
officer testified the driver was
staggering and his eyes were red.
There was also the smell of liquor
or a drug in the car. However, a
breathalizer test registered zero.
A passenger in the car with the
accused, Kevin Baker, stated
Van-Kerrebroeck was eating a
pizza and when the rest of the
pizza began slipping from the
seat the accused a tempted to
retrieve it, resulting in the type of
driving cited by the police officer.
The accused told the court the
steering was also defective on his
car and the brakes were also
defective and presented a receipt
in court for the repairs to correct
these defects.
He said that what the officer
thought was the smell of a drug
was the combination of poor
ventilation in the car and the fact
he had had two beers prior to the
incident.
Crown Attorney W. G.
Cochrane told the court that
eating pizza while driving would
constitute careless driving.
In summing up, Judge Hays
stated there certainly was
evidence of bad driving, adding
that "driving a car is a full time
job." He discounted the
suggestion that the odor of liquor
or drugs would be carried on
fiorn previous occupants in the
car.
In handing down the $200 fine,
Douglas Wedlake were as
follows;
Roderick Cyril Tuckey,
Huron Park, $53 for having liquor
in a place other than his
residence.
Kenneth A. Clark, London, $38
for having liquor in a place other
than his residence.
Larry E. Baird Hensall, $35 for
failing to use his low beams.
Mark A. Radford, Clinton, $53
for having liquor in a place other
than his residence.
Howard G. Armstrong Zurich,
$28 for having an improper
means of attachment on his
vehicle.
Terry Philips, Exeter, $28 for
failing to produce an operator's
licence.
Russell Highfield, London, $38
for failing to stop for a red light in
Exeter on July 13. He was in
collision with another car at the
Huron and Main St. intersection
and told the court he was
unaware that lights had been
installed at that intersection.
William George Fiscus, Dash-
wood, $53 for following another
vehicle too closely. He ran into
the rear of a car making a turn
into a laneway on August 15.
Harold N. Campbell, London,
$43 for following another vehicle
too closely on September 2.
Steven R. Corbett, Exeter, $53
for having liquor while under the
legal age of 18.
Gordon Russell Brown, Grand
Bend, $38 for failing to report
property damage which resulted
when his car struck a tree on
Highway 83 on August 9. He said
he was on his way to a ball game
and intended to report the in-
cident after the game. He was
coaching one of the teams in-
volved and said he didn't want to
let the boys down.
An error appeared in last
week's court report when it in-
dicated Robert E. Francis, Huron
Park, was fined for speeding and
failing to yield. He was fined only
for the latter and the T-A
apologizes for the error.

Cleared of rape
charge in Huron
A 28-year-old Windsor man was
found not guilty Friday of raping
a young London woman during an
incident on the 1973 Victoria Day
weekend at a Hay Township
campsite.
Robert Chappus was cleared of
the charge by a Supreme Court
jury at the end of a six-day trial.
The verdict was reached after
about four hours of deliberation.
Earlier in the trial, the jury
returned a no-bill finding (in-
sufficient evidence) for rape
charges against two other
Windsor men, James Roger
Curtis, 28 and Terrance Barris,
25, who were also charged in the
same incident.
Ten men faced 27 charges,
including attempted rape, rape,
and indecent assault. The men
were members of a Windsor
motorcycle club who police said
had used two 18-year old London
girls as part of the club's
initiation rites.
The charges were either with-
drawn or dismissed during a
preliminary hearing in August.
The men were arrested at a
Hay Township campsite
following combined efforts of 20
OPP officers and police depart-
ments in Windsor and Sandwich
