Huron County board of education took two swipes at the Huron County health unit Mon- day before deciding to carry its complaints to Huron County council in January. The board's spat with the health unit is linked to two unrelated issues — sewage and school bus tail lights. Trustees are unhappy with the length of time the unit took to study sewage problems at one of the board's schools and by a suggestion by the medical officer of health that the board increase the size of bus tail lights. Trustee John Henderson of Seaforth asked for the meeting with county council after lear- ning the health unit had taken more than a year to investigate sewage problems at Blyth Public School. He was upset that even after a year a reply on the problem was sent to the board by the Ontario ministry of the environment and not be the health unit. "Our administration can't seem to work with them (the health unit)," Mr. Henderson said. "We've got to bring this problem to county council." Board superintendent of business affairs R.B. Dunlop read the ministry's letter on the sewage problem at Mr. Hen- derson's request. The ministry said that due to sewage disposal problems and "serious water pollution" the board's practice of hauling sewage from the school should be continued.,. It noted that a faulty leeching bed and septic tank at the school were responsible for the problem. Earlier in the meeting, trustee Alec Corrigan of Bluevale suggested the health unit was over-stepping its authority. He was commenting on a letter from medical officer of health Dr. G.F. Mills which suggested that school buses be equipped with larger and brighter rear driving lights and that drivers be required to periodically stop the bus and clean the lifshtg Dr. Mills wrote that in poor weather conditions the size and low intensity of rear bus lights makes them "barely visible at 50 feet." He concluded: "Your attention to these points would give assurance that children will not be involved in school bus ac- cidents because of a lack of poorly visible driving and riding lights on the school buses of Huron County." Trustee Corrigan questioned the medical officer of health's right to be concerned with school bus safety. "I wonder what he is trying to do, come in and take over something from us?" Mr. Corrigan asked.
