The Exeter Times-Advocate, 1974-12-19, Page 8—TRIIIITTNII",T". Strong ecology supporter leaving SH for the north Let's get to work. YearsaaYgolfrc IthMe Ps ell: Lulas used to be a place of hard work and long hours of study. The kids would bundle up with books and lunch in hand and hike the long 4 or 5mile walk to school. By the time they got to school the journey was made worthwhile by working hard and meeting the few friends of the classroom. Seeing as the classroom ranged from grade 1 to grade 8, the student-teacher relationship was much apep n more d? personal. What has Today, students hop on a bus that picks them up at the door and they sit until the ride brings them up to the doors of the school. Once inside the huge brick building, the students chat with their many friends until the very last bell beckons you to home A student never really gets to know _ his teacher because he has anywhere from 6-10 different teachers which is quite a dif- ferent system from past years. The student teacher relationship isn't personal at all any more. Therefore, the students don't care what their teacher thinks of them and then they don't try as hard as they should. When exams roll around, the students study the night before and hope to do well. When the results come back and they have done poorly, they say they'll do better and when next term results come back, they have done just as poorly. At the end of the year when the student has just barely scraped by he says, "I'll do better next year." Who do they think they're fooling? Are they just not trying? Don't they care? Apparentlynot, or maybe they don't realize that the marks on their report card is what is going to get them a job. Come on students, do some work, get to know the teachers, and enjoy your classes because you know what they say, "High School years are the best years of your life!" Why is there no boys senior basketball team in South Huron this year? Is it because of a general feeling of laziness which most of the senior students are going through or that no one has time to play? Have you ever sat down and figured out how many people participate in the different athletic activities at South Huron? If you had, you would find that most of the people play on all or a large number of the teams, It is these people that keep South Huron's sports going. Where is the rest of,. the school? I can understand that work has to be done and if a person has a job that depends upon him being there he must live up to his responsibilities or he may lose it. I also can't say anything about the person who would have to hitch-hike home in the cold winter nights after practice since I live in Exeter. However, there must be enough interesed people to muster up a basketball team. This lack of interest has also been noticed in other sports like track and volleyball. What is the matter? He also started a Trap Club two years ago and I understand it is going quite well. Two years ago also marks the start of another club which is especially im- portant to me. Although the Conservation Club has diminished in size Mr. Probizanski supplied the ideas and got it going into many in- teresting and helpful projects. Exeter has given Mr. Probizanski many memorable moments. He says the students are of a special breed each one very individualistic and each one with a very definite personality. He says you can be on a one to one basis with most of them which is something unique in today's society. South Huron was the first place he taught and it gave him many experiences and teaching ideas he will never forget. Although he doesn't want to leave, Northern Ontario was where he grew up and was educated. Also Sault Ste. Marie is 400 miles from his home and his parents in Thunder Bay whereas from here it is close to 750-800 miles away. Mr. Probizanski enjoyed South Huron and has no complaints. The teachers were all friendly. One of the best teachers under this school's roof will leave us soon but his memories, his ideas and his ambition will always be with us. We're going to miss you but we hope you enjoyed us as much as we've enjoyed you and please come back and visit us soon! Teresa Ondrejicka Exeter is about to lose a good marl. Brian Probizanski, a South Huron Biology and Environ- mental Science teacher is leaving us to venture into the inner depths of the north. An active participant in many school activities,Mr. Probizanski is returning to the type of country that attracts him most that being the natural where all the world's resources are at your fingertips. Accepting a position in Sault Ste. Marie Collegiate Institute he will teach basically the same subjects under a little different system though. January will see the students of Sault Ste. Marie start all new subjects as they are on the semestered system. Mr. Probizanski was born in Thunder Bay and has been an "outdoors man" all his life, When he came to Exeter 31 /2 years ago he brought all his knowledge with him and her certainly put it to good use. He started the junior girls and boys Outers which are Grade nine and tens interested in camping, canoeing, and learning the outdoor techniques. Students have even been able to improve some of the models from the kits. Neither the cost nor the number of hours that go into the making of a steam engine prevent the students from making them. The cost of the engines varies, the cheapest model being about forty dollars while the most expensive costing around seventy-five dollars. The time involved in the making of one would depend on whether it was a kit, or being made from scratch. It' would take approximately twenty-five hours for the kit model, and fifty hours for the "scratch" model. For a look at one of the many engines that have been built, there is one in the Tech Wing showcase. This model was built from plans of course, but the materials didn't come from a kit, they were supplied by the machine shop. As far the future, Mr. Dehaan hopes his students have con- tinuing interest ,in the steam engines. Also, the building of a large scale steam engine is just underway. This engine will be quite large and will produce four horsepower, a great deal more than the approximate one horse- sepower put out by the previous models. This should be of great interest to the students in the months ahead. See Our Display of By RON SCHROEDER Steam power is out, just like the horse and buggy. True or False? One can't say that steam power is out, it might be con- sidered old-fashioned, but it is not to say that there is none being used in the world today. Electrical generating stations have been using steam power to produce electricity for years. And now, even nuclear power requires steam to drive the electricity producing turbines. Here at South Huron, interest in steam power can be found in the Machine Shop Technology. Department of the Technical; Wing. Students in the third and fourth year classes are building steam engines for individual projects. The idea came about two years ago when one of Mr. Dehaan's classes was discussing steam engines. Interest in the making of the steam engines was quite apparent and so a few students sent for plans from Popular Mechanics Magazine. They obtained the plans and kits, which supplied all the materials needed for construction. The materials were cast and the students had to do the machining of the parts in order to complete them. Since then, steam engines have become the major item that students make for one of their projects.
