SENIOR FOOTBALL AWARDS — Thursday night at South Huron District High School awards were made to
the school's 1974 top football performers, Above, senior coach Ron Bogart presents the Paul Robinson
Memorial trophy to John Wuerth for dedication and leadership. Next are outstanding lineman Larry Johns
and most valuable player and best halfback Dave Lovell, T-A photo
Tied for first place
The guest speaker at Thursday's football awards dinner
at South Huron District High School provided plenty of ad-
vice and encouragement for the young athletes and their
coaches.
He was Rick Newborough, who is an assistant coach
with Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo. Starting out
Newborough said, "two things which you should remember
are faith is better than doubt and love and respect are
better than hate."
He told about the Denver Broncos huddle where all the
players hold hands. "There nothing wrong with telling a
guy about his dedication and devotion."
The WLU coach continued "don't set your goals too low
and have a positive expectancy of the future. If you have
any setbacks treat them as temporary,"
In giving an example of goal setting, Newborough told
of his club playing St. Marys of Halifax in a 1972 playoff
game. "They were No. 1 and we were No. 4. We set an
offensive goal to score 50 points, With 11 minutes to go we
had 50 points. We didn't score anymore because our goal
was too low."
He also suggested goal setting on an individual basis
saying "put in writing what you are planning on doing. Have
confidence and don't be afraid to shoot for the moon."
Help crippled kids
The first week of February 1975 should be a very
important and profitable one for crippled children across
the province of Ontario.
The greatest friend of crippled kids anywhere in the
world Whipper Billy Watson is organizing a Snowerama for
Timmy on Sunday, February 2.
Then comes the annual London Sportsmen's Dinner on
Monday, February 3 and the next night the Exeter Lions are
staging their second annual Sportsmen's Dinner.
Whipper Watson will be a busy fellow as he is expected
to attend all three functions, Watson was a big hit with
everyone at the 1974 dinner here in Exeter.
As many as 30,000 machines from various snowmobile
associations clubs and individuals will embark on a 100 mile
rally over any of a dozen official courses planned in 12
different area throughout the province, February 2.
Courses are being planned in the Bruce Peninsula,
Kitchener, Newmarket, Smith Falls, Haliburton, Cornwall,
Eganville, Port Carling, Sudbury, Timmins, Thunder Bay
and Sault Ste. Marie.
The Snowerama will be held in much the same fashion
as a walkathon where donations or pledges are taken and
check points set up along the route.
Fifty percent of the proceeds will go to meet the needs
of crippled children at the community level. The balance
will be used to support regional and provincial rehabilita-
tion services beyond the scope of individual communities.
Several politicians have shown interest in par-
ticipating. They are Minister of Transport John Rhodes,
Minister of Natural Resources Leo Bernier, Minister of In-
dustry and Tourism Claude Bennett along with newsman
Harvey Kirck.
Whipper Watson who tirelessly tours the country at his
own expense on behalf of the nation's handicapped
youngsters hopes the Snowerama will become an annual
event if enough interest and support is generated.
Getting back to the two Sportsmen Dinners in Western
Ontario the main speaker for London and Exeter has
already been obtained. He is Jack Donohue, coach of
Canada's national basketball team.
Lloyd Ross who is the dinner chairman for the Exeter
Lions club is busy lining up a good array of sports
celebrities to go along with Donohue.
Firebirds are hot
The newest team in the North American hockey league,
the Philadelphia Firebirds are proving to be very
successful. Tom Young of the Birds is tied for the scoring
leadership with 26 points.
In a Hockey News of a couple of weeks ago with 10
games played Hensall's Jack Chipchase had one goal and
two assists along with 19 minutes in penalties. Jack moved
to Philadelphia this year from the Roanoke Valley Rebels
where he played for about four years.
Nairn leads Continental
Latest statistics from the OHA Senior Continental
league show playing coach Jack Nairn of the Lucan-Ilderton
Jets with the most points since the league was organized
three years ago.
Nairn has a total of 230 points. Next in line is John St.
Cyr of Stratford with an even 200.
In another interesting item the Jets have had the fewest
number of roster changes since the league came into being.
In three years the Woodstock Royals have used 66
different players while the Lucan-Ilderton figure is 36.
