Next are outstanding lineman Larry Johns and most valuable player and best halfback Dave Lovell, T-A photo Tied for first place The guest speaker at Thursday's football awards dinner at South Huron District High School provided plenty of ad- vice and encouragement for the young athletes and their coaches. He was Rick Newborough, who is an assistant coach with Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo. Starting out Newborough said, "two things which you should remember are faith is better than doubt and love and respect are better than hate." He told about the Denver Broncos huddle where all the players hold hands. "There nothing wrong with telling a guy about his dedication and devotion." The WLU coach continued "don't set your goals too low and have a positive expectancy of the future. If you have any setbacks treat them as temporary," In giving an example of goal setting, Newborough told of his club playing St. Marys of Halifax in a 1972 playoff game. "They were No. 1 and we were No. 4. We set an offensive goal to score 50 points, With 11 minutes to go we had 50 points. We didn't score anymore because our goal was too low." He also suggested goal setting on an individual basis saying "put in writing what you are planning on doing. Have confidence and don't be afraid to shoot for the moon." Help crippled kids The first week of February 1975 should be a very important and profitable one for crippled children across the province of Ontario. The greatest friend of crippled kids anywhere in the world Whipper Billy Watson is organizing a Snowerama for Timmy on Sunday, February 2. Then comes the annual London Sportsmen's Dinner on Monday, February 3 and the next night the Exeter Lions are staging their second annual Sportsmen's Dinner. Fifty percent of the proceeds will go to meet the needs of crippled children at the community level. The balance will be used to support regional and provincial rehabilita- tion services beyond the scope of individual communities. Several politicians have shown interest in par- ticipating. They are Minister of Transport John Rhodes, Minister of Natural Resources Leo Bernier, Minister of In- dustry and Tourism Claude Bennett along with newsman Harvey Kirck.
