The Exeter Times-Advocate, 1974-12-12, Page 6Almost every day we hear hockey fans talk about the
watered down brand of hockey being played in the pro ranks
and they always point the finger at expansion,
• Admittedly the increased number of teams has cut
down on the all-round calibre of our national pastime but a
quick look at the standings in the National Hockey League
will indicate expansion teams are faring much better than
the so-called established teams.
In the NHL leaders in all divisions are clubs of the
newer variety. The best point total by far this season has
been recorded by the Buffalo Sabres.
Punch Imlach and company have really come alive
thanks mostly to the French Connection line. The Sabres
lead division four with 46 points and a 14 point margin over
the Boston Bruins who were expected to walk away with the
division title.
The Sabres have lost only four times in 29 starts this
season and are now on an undefeated streak of 11 games.
The three members of the French Connection have each
scored 20 goals to date. They are Gil Peerault, Richard
Martin and Rene Robert.
Probably the biggest test for the Sabres this year will
come tonight Thursday when they are at home to another
amazing club the Vancouver Canucks.
The Vancouver team leads division two with 38 points
13 more than the second place Chicago Black Hawks. Con-
tributing a lot to the Vancouver success are a couple of
former Junior OHA performers Dennis Ververgaert, Don
Lever and John Gould.
The Los Angeles Kings tied with the Montreal
Canadiens at the top of division three are also more than a
pleasant surprise for their supporters.
The Kings have only lost two games and have managed
to salvage nine ties.
To complete the expansion leaders the Philadelphia
Flyers defending Stanley Cup champs head division one
with a comfortable lead over the Atlanta Flames, another
expanded team.
The only established team in division one, the New
York Rangers is floundering in the basement.
Another champion
It was great to hear the news over the weekend that a
Canadian girl won the ladies championship in the Moscow
International figure skating tournament.
Taking the title was 18 year-old Lynn Nightingale of Ot-
tawa. Lynn is a granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Payne
of Grand Bend.
When Karen Magnusson deserted the amateur ranks
the question came up as to who could replace her as
Canada's top female skater.
It didn't take Lynn Nightingale long to answer that
question and most decisively. We will certainly hear a lot
from Lynn in the next couple of years.
Highest number in hockey
Gerry Desjardins, the goalie for the Michigan Stags in
the World Hockey Association now has the highest number
onithe back of his sweater ever worn by any hockey player.
It wasn't many years ago when the only number worn
on a goalie's jersey was No. 1. That changed some in recent
years when some netminders switched to the number 30.
But Desjardins has gone one better. His new number is
88. When asking for the change to 88 Desjardins said
"maybe you could, say a goalie is behind the eight ball so
why shouldn't he wear a double eight?
While talking about the Michigan Stags they have trad-
,-,:' away their biggest liability as far as high salaries is con-
The financially troubled Stags sent Marc Tardiff to the
Quebec Nordiques.
Opposition brings crowds
While the Toronto Toros are drawing better crowds than
they did a year ago their best turnouts this year are coming
when recognized stars are part of the opposition.
A week ago when the Houston Aeros and the Howe
family were at Maple Leaf Gardens more than 14,000 fans
were in attendance. Six to eight thousand has been an
average figure for most Toro home contests.
Next Tuesday night Bobby Hull and his Winnipeg Jets
will be in Toronto and the turnstiles at Maple Leaf Gardens
should sing a merrry tune.
The Toros have been saving their worst performances
for the benefit of home fans and this has not helped too
much at the gate. They have lost their last six games on
home ice.
A quotable quote
From Dave Schultz of the Philadelithia Flyers who has
a reputation as a scrapper on the ice, "I've never fought
anybody in the streets never in my life. Frankly, I would
probably get beat. I don't know how to box."
