Enjoys hockey,
wrestling on TV
Archie. Adair, RR 8, Parkhill
Who celebrated his 90th birthday
Saturday is a keen viewer of
hockey games and wrestling on
television.
Despite a hearing problem, he
wears glasses only to watch his
favorite television' programs,
Asked .about his favorite
hockey team, Mr, Adair replied,
"It sure isn't the Toronto Maple
Leafs this year."
He leans towards the Buffalo
Sabres because they are a big,
strong club and he still has ..a
liking for Buffalo general
manager Pinch
Born in Osprey township in
1884, Mr, Adair was a farmer and
lumberman in the Collingwood.
'area .for most of his life, He has
lived with his son and daughter-
in-law, Mr. and Mrs, Hugh Adair
at their farm home, a mile south
of Corbett since 1964.
One of his favorite wrestlers
over the years has been Whipper
Billy Watson and he never missed
a wrestling show at the
Collingwood arena . back in the
1950's and often carried Whip-
per's bags to the arena.
Asked to reminisce about the
olden days, he said, "the in-
vention of the gas tractors really
floored us.
He spends about four weeks
each summer visiting old
acquaintances in Collingwood.

institution in the laundry and

Political pressure caused
problems for the asylum school
at the turn of the century. This
turn of events are recorded for
us.
"The same year (1902) was an
important one in the history of
the asylum in as much as its close
saw a sadly backward step in the
discontinuance of the schools,
which had been in operation from
1888. The staff of teachers had
been reduced to four, all of whom
lacked the _qualifications
necessary in the special line of
training required, so that this
branch had become, practically,
a dead letter.
"It was, therefore, abandoned
for the time being, the
'Superintendent expressing the
hope that the schools would soon
be reopened with a capable staff
of teachers, augmented by one to
give manual training, so that the
institution might be placed not
only on its former popular
footing, but far in advance."
Other matters of interest
especially concerning political
pressure and progress in the
hospital school follow, but these
will have to wait another column.
