Play was very even in Satur-
day's doubleheader of the Exeter
minor hockey house league play
with both games ending in a tie.
In the atom division Taylor
Motors and Conklin Lumber
played to a 5-5 deadlock and in
pee wee-bantam action Nor-
thlander and Avco tied 2-2.

to pace the Conklin scoring at-
tack and Steve Riddell notched
the other two markers.
Steve Bidtnes picked up a hat
trick to lead the Taylor Motors
scoring. Getting one goal apiece
were Frank Giffin and Jamie
Chaffe.
Terry Bender and Robeit
Watson were the Northlander
marksmen and Bruce Shaw and
Richard Neevel scored for Avco.
The HaWks scored three times
in the. third period against Lucan
Wednesday night but the best the
rally could do was tie the score
and the Irish were able to score
once late in the period to pull out
an 8-7 victory.
The Irish took a 3-1 lead after
the first period of play increased
it to 7-4 after two frames and
came back after the Hawks got
back on even terms,
Mike McIntyre scored twice in
the first period for Lucan while
Brent Harvey added a single, The
lone Hawks score came from the
stick of Brian Taylor orf a three-
way effort with Harry Smits and
John Beer.

front 5-1 by the halfway mark of
the middle period.

with three successful shots in
four minutes of play. Harry Smits
was the first to hit the mark as he
converted passes from Randy
Gilfillan and Brian Taylor at
13:24,

Matt Muller registered with

and Richard Mommersteeg and

37.
The Exeter Hawks could come
up with only one victory in three
starts this week in the Ontario
Hockey Association Junior "D"
Western division.
In Lucan Wednesday night the
Hawks went down to defeat 8-7 at
the hands of the Irish and then
bounced back to post a 7-4
decision over the Lambeth Flyers
at the Exeter arena Friday.

Sunday the Hawks were out-
scored 4-2 by the hometown Lions
one of the newest clubs in the
league.
In upcoming action, the Hawks
will be at home at the Exeter
arena Friday night at 8:30 to
meet the Mitchell Hawks and
Sunday they pay a visit to the
Lambeth Flyers.
Fall behind early
In Port Stnaley Sunday night
the Hawks were behind 3-0
through the second period and
were never able to recover
sufficiently although they did get
within one goal early in the third
period.
With Port Stanley leading 3-0,
Donnie McKellar started the
Exeter scoring as he converted
a pass from Noel Skinner at
10:24 of the middle frame.

the assist going to Donnie
McKellar.

with each team taking 10 in-
fractions handed out by referees
Jim Cressman and Terry
Glenister.
Overcome deficit
On home ice, Friday night, the
Hawks roared back from a 4-2
first period deficit to post an
impressive 7-4 victory over the
Lambeth Flyers.
Lambeth wasted little time in
getting on the scoreboard with a
goal in the first eight seconds of
play and scored three more
before the first period ended
while—the -Hawks bounded back
with two scores.
Donnie McKellar opened the
Exeter, scoring on a three-way
passing effort with Gerald Weido
and Steve Jennison at 13.01 and
two minutes later, Noel Skinner
registered on a pass from Brian
Taylor.
Two goals in a span of 15
seconds midway through the
second period put the Hawks
back on even terms with Lam-
beth. Harry Smits converted a
pass from Randy Gilfillan and
In these days when the emphasis appears to be on in-
dividualism and independence a move by a couple of area
hockey groups is refreshing.
While a keen sense of rivalry will continue, the Exeter
and Huron Park Minor Hockey Associations have joined
forces each Saturday morning in house league play.
House leagues are aimed at providing all youngsters
regardless of talent and ability the opportunity to take part
each week in Canada's favorite sport,
Under previous conditions, in the younger categories
two teams at the most were rounded up in each class. This
meant the same players were facing each other every
Saturday morning.
With the amalgamation of the two groups a bit of varie-
ty has been added to the games.
We would like to congratulate EMHA president Ron
Horn and John O'Neill, president of the Huron Park group
for their foresight in providing some extra action for these
boys.
After all, at these ages of atom and pee wee we would
hope everybody is out to enjoy themselves with little
emphasis put on winning. That comes soon enough.
Sixth Red and Black tourney
The sixth annual Red and Black wrestling tournament
will be held at South Huron District High School Friday
afternoon and evening,
South Huron coach Doug Ellison has again lined up an
excellent group of teams. Four championship teams of
previous years will be back to compete.
They include Sarnia Northern, Strathroy, Waterloo
Collegiate and South Huron, winners in 1971.
Also included on the agenda will be two all-Ontario
champions of a year ago from the Petrolia High School.
Preliminaries get underway at 1 p.m. Friday with the
championship rounds getting going at 7 p.m.
Any fans wishing to attend will be more than welcome,
The admission charge is very nominal.
Inflationary times
Inflation! That's a popular word nowadays and seems
to apply to all walks of life. Inflation is hitting the sports
world as well as business and the economy.
The World Football League appears to be a good exam-
ple with team after team having trouble meeting high
salaries and several folding.
Several weeks ago when NHL president Clarence
Campbell was in London at a sports symposium he issued a
warning to professional hockey clubs that unless salary in-
flation is cut back and the pro leagues stop drafting junior
age players all hockey is in for serious problems.
Campbell predicted a dark and dreary future for junior
and minor pro hockey that could eventually affect the
operation of the NHL and the rival WHA. The NHL prexy
said the pro leagues must be concerned about the plight of
junior teams in Canada which are already feeling the strain
of .losing so many top name performers to the NHL and
WHA in the past co4le: of years.'
He said pro hockey is draining the juniors dry and at the
same time cutting off the supply line for the future.
In the 1974 drafts .a total of 29 players who had not
reached their 20th birthday were signed by the NHL and
WHA combined. This deprived junior clubs across Canada
of their best gate attractions. A total of 18 made it to the big
leagues. The NHL signed 12 and six went to WHA teams.
Signing of these top 18 players was certainly a blow to
the junior hockey development program right across
Canada. They were expected to be the top drawing cards for
about a dozen teams in our Dominion.
Campbell said player bidding has escalated hockey
salaries out of proportion and that a drastic cutback in con-
tracts would have to come-to keep professional hockey not
only in perspective but also alive.
He blamed the drafting of underage players primarily
on the WHA and said the NHL haA no alternative but to go
along and get in on the bidding war at great expense to all
teams.
The NHL president took a long Hard look at the minor
level of hockey and predicted that hundreds of players
would be looking for jobs within a year and called the future
of minor pro leagues very dubious.
Up to now teams from both leagues have been handing
out unbelievable salaries and it isn't uncommon for some
teams to be burdened with four or five players contracts of
a half million dollars spread over as little a period as five
years.
Where is this going to end? Campbell said that because
of rising salaries NHL teams have been forced to cut back
in their farm club operations. This is a drastic step which
will have its effects in the very near future.
During the last two years major league player salaries
have risen 93 percent putting hockey ahead of both baseball
and football in the professional sports money earning field.
During his London visit Campbell said the NHL cannot
continue to be economically viable with its present scale of
salaries.
The secret in staying in business for both the NHL and
the WHA seems to depend on their abilities in bringing
down players salaries.
If these high salaries being paid to the hockey stars con-
tinue the person taking the brunt of the slap will likely be
the people who pay to attend the games.
This is only a guess but we would suggest that ticket
prices at NHL games have increased four or five times in
the last 15 years.
