Local official A native of Exeter and a product of the local Minor Hockey Association is continuing to be successful in the world Hockey Association. Graham Hern, son of Mr. and Mrs,, Ken Hern, now of Erin is in his second year as a linesman in, the WHA, He was in. Toronto Friday night handling the lines in a game between Edmonton and the Toros. We saw a couple of minutes of the game on television and recognized Graham wearing No. 26. Four local hockey enthusiasts Jack and Lossy Fuller and Lloyd'and Carol Moore were at the game at Maple Leaf Gardens and had a long chat with Graham, He was not intended to be handling the game but was called in from his St, Catharines home when the assigned official was snowbound in Quebec City, The second linesman was also called in at the last mo- ment and he is a nephew of the late Harry Sherwood of Ex- eter. More top bowling performances Last week we mentioned the excellent bowling efforts by Norma Coleman at the local lanes. This week we con- tinue with great scores from the men's league. Four teams bowling in the men's "A" league on Mon- day, November 18 accumulated high scores for five men and one individual high triple was chalked up. The C4th team with captain Don Jackson leading the way scored 3,867 pins for three games, Jackson who is an employee of Exeter District Co-Op came up with scores of 274, 331 and 369 for a tremendous triple of 974. The team bowling against C4th also came up with more than a respectable score. Discount Dave's with Pete McFalls tossing a 789 triple and a 327 single amassed a three game total of 3661. The same night another battle took place between the Rockets and Spares with only 43 pins separating the two teams after three games. The Spares with George Pratt's triple of 821 the best edged the Rockets 3,745 to 3,702. Pratt also has a single game score of 325. Al Flynn was tops for the Rockets with a 774 triple. A pair of stamps Looking over the line-up of the Toledo Goaldiggers of the International league in a recent issue of the Hockey News we find a couple of familiar names. Remember Craig and Darrell Stamp. They were valuable members of the Haliburton Huskies back about four years ago when the Ex- eter Hawks and Haliburton met for the OHA Junior "D" championship. A slow start Winning hockey games is only one of the many problems facing Milt Schmidt and his new entry in the National Hockey league, the Washington Capitals. One big headache for the Caps is the matter of selling tickets. Prospective customers have seemed to disappear quickly. Before the team became reality about 30,000 re- quests had been received from eager fans. Team vice-president Jerry Sachs says "It's an in- teresting phenomenon. I guarantee you we didn't lie about the 30,000 requests. They were very real." Sachs said the Capitals have less than 7,000 season ticket holders. In the first half dozen home games of the season a crowd of 10,000 was yet to become a reality. The situation in Washington is bound to improve as the season wears on. It appears that American sport fans don't take hockey seriously until they get football out of their system. In the same vein the United States television hockey programs don't usually start until after Christmas. In their first season in the NHL the Philadelphia Flyers averaged about 9,600 fans per game. Today the Flyers have a long waiting list for tickets for their home games. It's okay to eat crow From time to time we are forced to "eat Crow" as the saying goes for some of our predictions but now apparently eating crow is becoming quite common in the United States. A bit of information on eating crows was included in the latest release we have received from the Winchester News Bureau. In the States the crow has now been declared a game bird. In many states it's unlawful to discard the meat of a game species. If you shoot it, you must eat it and this applies to crow as well as other usually more appetizing birds such as pheasants, geese and ducks. Some wild game cook books have crow recipes along with baked skunk saddle and boiled bushes. The article goes on to say "we've been told .by a few cooks that barbecued crow is fit for the gods if the sauce is right." This information may be correct but it will take some proving before we would sit down to a crow dinner. This may substantiate the old saying "the proof of the pudding is in the eating," Exeter teams were very successful in a Wednesday trip to St. Marys in regularly scheduled Shamrock "A" league play. The Exeter • midgets carpe up with a 5-3 victory in the first game of a doubleheader and the bantams followed with a close 2-1 decision. In the midget game the Exeter club took advantage of two third period St. Marys penalties by scoring two goals in exactly one minute late in the third period.
