The 1974-75 hockey season locally is now well underway
and it promises to be one of the best ever in more ways than
one.
The number of teams participating not only at the Ex-
eter arena but throughout the district have increased con-
siderably and the brand of hockey is also improving steadi-
ly.
First on the minor level in Exeter, the number of teams
playing in the Shamrock league has grown. Now in addition
to four teams in the "A" division, this number has been in-
creased to five.
The "A" teams are in the atom, pee wee, bantam,
midget and juvenile divisions. Added to the list this year
are atom, pee wee, bantam and midget in a "B" classifica-
tion,
To these nine teams playing a regular Shamrock
schedule add the Exeter Waxers, a novice aged team which
plays exhibition games and participates in several tour-
naments throughout the year.
The calibre of hockey turned out by the youngsters is
also on the upswing with continuous improvement in
coaching techniques.
This fall most of the local minor coaches have attended
coaching clinics and received accreditation.
The hockey school or clinic operated by the Exeter
Minor Hockey Association for six weeks prior to the open-
ing of the season was very beneficial to the novice and atom
boys participating.
Adding interest to the hockey scene is the re-
appearance of the Exeter Mohawks as an intermediate
hockey team.
The Mohawks along with Zurich, Shipka, Centralia
College and Thedford are members of the South Huron
hockey league.
Formation of the Exeter club gives the opportunity to a
lot of fellows to display their hockey skills in'a very com-
petitive league.
Along with a four team recreation league which goes
every Thursday night at the Exeter arena, every one
regardless of age should now have the chance to 'enjoy
Canada's favorite sport.
The Mohawks will be filling the Monday night at 9 p.m,
slot at the arena throughout the winter and will be providing
exciting action for all area •ians.
The Exeter Hawks under the guidance of coach Terry
Bourne and manager Fred Mommersteeg appear to be
heading for a good season in OHA Junior "D" play.
Fan interest in all phases of the local hockey program
appears to be very good. Most Sunday afternoons from
about four o'clock and well into the evening are devoted to
play by the "B" minor clubs and the juveniles and the
number of fans coming and going throughout this period has
been as high as 500.

A great bowling effort
A couple of weeks ago, one of the most enthusiastic rive
pin bowlers in this area turned in the best score ever
recorded by a female at the Exeter Bowling Lanes.
Norma. Coleman of Kippen, a member of the Happy
Gals for more years than she probably cares to remember
threw 11 strikes in regular league play and ended up with a
score of 399.
Starting off in terrific fashion, Norma tossed perfect
strikes in the first eight frames. Trouble set in then in the
frame when she left a corner two-pin and failed to convert
the spare and also missed it on the third attempt..
Undaunted, she came roaring back and threw three
more strikes in the tenth frame to end with a whopping
score of 399.
Congratulations, Norma on a tremendous performance.
Could probably use you on the T-A team this year.
Prepare for sportsmens dinner
February 4, 1975 may appear to be far off in the future,
but actually it is less than three months away.
That's the date of the second annual Exeter Lions club
Sportsmen's dinner with all proceeds going to aid crippled
children throughout Ontario.
Chairman Lloyd Ross and his energetic committee are
working hard on arrangements. Despite earlier reports the
dinner will be held again at the Exeter Legion hall. The hall
is used each Tuesday for court purposes but court officials
have agreed to hold their proceedings elsewhere for Tues-
day February 5.
The local committee is working very closely with the
London dinner group which is headed this year by Alex
Kellman of CFPL television.
The guest speaker at the London dinner whidh will be
held the night before is Jack Donohue head coach of
Canada's national basketball team.
Many other top names in numerous sports are being
contacted and don't be surprised if a couple of sporting
stars appear here in Exeter.
Lloyd Ross tells us he hopes all the guests this year will
be new with the exception of Whipper Billy Watson who has
always been championing for crippled children throughout
the world,
The master of ceremonies this year will be Bruce
Murray of St. Marys. Bruce is currently Lions district
governor and one of the best after dinner speakers we have
ever heard and we know he will do a commendable job.

A first for EMHA
The Exeter Minor Hockey Association has also come up
with a first and a step to equality of the sexes. A woman has
been named as manager of one of the minor clubs.

Variety in house leagues
Another interesting venture this year is the move to
have the Exeter and Huron Park house league teams meet
each other every Saturday.
This puts a little variety into the house league activities
for both centres. Huron Park is icing two atom and two pee
wee-bantam teams while Exeter has one atom and two in
the older category,
With only two teams at the very most in any category it
hie* the boys are not playing the same opposition every
Saturday.
