The new catalytic converters
need lead-free gas to function
properly, Guess that's why
they're calling this "the year
they got the lead out."
A catalytic converter changes
carbon monoxide and
hydrocarbons in auto exhaust
into harmless carbon dioxide
and water, through a process
known as "chemical ox-
idation."
The effect is the same as "bur-
ning up" the pollutants, but it
doesn't generate the flame
and radiant heat of regular
burning. Most of the Con-
verters use platinum and
palladium as a catalyst.
Some manufacturers say the
converters should be ade-
quately efficient for five years
or 50,000 miles.
Catalytic converters are ex•
pectecl to save more than the
environment. Savings as high
at $100 a year are mentioned,
in improved fuel economy and
reduced maintenance.
Come see how good the new cars
look, and how well they handle. You'll
tell yourself!
