Friends and neighbours
responded to the appeal for help
for Mrs. Ed Preszcator and her
family who lost their possessions
in a fire.
One group of women prepared
a quilt. Donations of food,
clothing, toys, household fur-
nishings and money were brought
to Ed Hendrick's garage, then
taken by volunteer farm trucks to
Mrs, Preszcator's home in Huron
Park.
Those who conducted the drive
were overwhelmed by the
generosity of the donors.

The U.C.W. of Zion United
Church held their monthly
meeting Thursday evening,
October 10. Thanksgiving was the
theme of the program directed by
Mrs. Lloyd Lamport, Mrs. Roy
Ratz, Mrs. Ervin Ratz and Mrs.
Cliff Russell.
By readings, hymns and
Scripture, members were
reminded of reasons for giving
thanks to God. Special music in
song was provided by Mr, & Mrs.
Douglas Gill with Mrs. Gordon
Finkbeiner playing the ac-
companiment.
During the business conducted
by Mrs, Russell, roll call was
answered by a Scripture verse on
Thanksgiving. Repairs needed at
the manse were outlined. Used
nylons, for crafts at the nursing
home, are to be turned in to Mrs.
Ed Hendrick before the
November meeting. Donations
for the October used clothing
drive are to be brought to the
lower west hall of the church.
Favourite recipes were
requested for Mrs. Irvin Fink-
beiner and Mrs. Don Finkbeiner
who are preparing a cook book to

Due to crop failures in several
major producing countries in1972,
farm and consequently food
prices soared in 1973. This year it
isn't a crop failure yet in all of
North America, but all in-
dications point to a greatly
reduced crop in all major com-
modities. Even to the extent that
the president of the USA has cur-
tailed grain exports.
A child can figure out that this
again will mean increases in food
prices. There are several
reasons for the reduced crop, the
main one being spring floods and
summer droughts. Another fac-
tor was the increase in fertilizer
prices, in some cases 300%
higher. It stands to reason that
many farmers put less of this
stuff on their fields, with resul-
tant lower yields. Since one of
the most important fertilizer is
nitrogen, which is for a great
deal is made out of natural gas,
one can readily see why this
costs more.
Countries like India simply
didn't have the money to buy,

Hirtzel, Emerson Wein, Mrs.
Myrtle Baker and Mrs. Howard

Tuesday, October 8, to a party in
honour of Louis Hirtzel's one
hundredth birthday.

and together with a similar
summer drought as we had here,
it made their almost sufficiency
in food grains collapse. In
Canada and the USA the shortage
of grain caused the price of feed
grains to quadruple from two
years ago. As .a result pork and
beef producers' costs rose so
much that they operated at a
loss. Many pork men sold or are;
selling their sows and beef men
their cows. This in turn will br-
ing less pork on the market next
year and less beef the year after.
When there is a shortage the
price will go up and thus we can
expect to pay more for our meat
in the next couple of years. We,
as farmers don't like todays
prices and we, as consumers
won't like next years prices.
Orderly marketing through a
strong marketing board is the
only answer.
They can stabilize prices for
farmer and consumer alike.
Look at the Egg Board. When the
price was low in the USA traders
brought 30 million eggs into
Canada. Subsequently 28 million
are spoiling. Now US eggs are
going up in price and Whelan has
put limits to what graders can
export or it would pull our price
sky-high.
If the Egg Board was strong
enough it could say how many
eggs to reserve for Canadian
needs at a reasonable price for
both producer and consumer and
sell the surplus on the world
market. Now the graders have to
be stopped by federal order. Is it
any wonder that graders try to
destroy marketing boards. It
prevents them to rip-off the
public.
Sees more increases
coming in food prices
