Hawks drop first
exhibition to Irish
The first exhibition junior
hockey game of the season for the
Exeter Hawks ended in a losing
cause Friday night as their arch
xivals, the Ltican Irish scored an
.64 victory at the Huron Park
Arena,
Both teams used a total of 19
players including three goal
tenders as respective coaches
Terry Bourne of the Hawks and
Bob Bogden of Lucan tried to get
a good look at all of the
prospective players.
Each team scored two goals in
the first period and the Irish
moved in front 5.4 after 40
minutes of play and outscored the
Hawks three goals. to one in the
final session.
The game was less than three
minutes old, when Mike McIntyre
put the Irish in front on a three
way effort with Gary Isaac and
Brent Harvey.
At 11:33 Richard Mom-
mersteeg knotted the score as he
converted a pass front Rick
Ingram. The tie lasted for only a
minute. Brian McNeil took a pass
from Jeff Park and put Lucan
again into a one goal lead,
Before the period was over
Steve Schroeder scored for the
Hawks with the assist going to
Murray Parsons,
The Irish scored quickly in the
second period at the seven second
mark on a successful shot by
McIntyre with assists going to
Brent Harvey and Craig Corman,
A three-way passing com-
bination put the Hawks even at 3-
3 at -the six minute mark of the
middle frame. Mommersteeg
fired his second goal with help
from Kevin Bestard and Brian
Taylor,
In less than two minutes near
the halfway mark, Brian McNeil
and Brad Taylor scored for the
Irish. Assists went to Marty
Wraith and Ed Robb.
The fourth Exeter score of the
night came with only 20 seconds
left as Rick Ingram hit the mark
on an unassisted effort.
In the third period, the Irish
scored three times, Blinking the
light were Mike McIntyre with
his third of the game, Craig
Corman and Ed Robb.
The final Hawks counter came
at the 10:43 mark on a shot by
Matt Muller. Gerald Weido
assisted,
The Irish took 13 of the 25
penalties handed out by referee
Frank Slota of St. Thomas.
Bob Brand, Gord Baird and
Randy Lovie were the Exeter
goalies while Kevin Lightfoot,
Ron Steeper and Eugene Glavin

Exeter's Precious Blood school
lost three games to St. Columban
Saturday in a Huron-Perth
separate school sudden-death
playoff series,
After losing to St. Columban in
junior boys by a 4-0 score and 3-0
in a girls games, the local senior
team put up a real fight losing 4-3
on extra kicks after the regular
game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Ted Ducharme was the top goal
scorer for Precious Blood not-
ching the only score of regular
play and combined with Doug
Brooks and Dave Robinson on the
penalty kicks.
SH runners
show well
Runners from South Huron
District High School turned in
excellent performances in the
annual invitational cross country
meet at the University of Western
Ontario, Saturday.
South Huron won the girls team
race with 23 points with runners
finishing second, fifth, seventh'
and ninth. The local athletes
finished fourth in the co-ed race
with each school represented by
two boys and two girls.
In the high school girls four
kilometres race which is about
two and a half miles Janet Gielen
of South Huron was second
finishing only four seconds
behind the winner Colleen
Connolly of Wheable. The London
athlete set a new record of 16
minutes and 19 seconds.
Lucy Van Esbroeck of South
Huron was fifth and Kathleen
Gielen finished seventh. Agnes
Van Esbroeck was ninth.

Hawks in Lambeth, Sunday
List OHA junior schedule
The regular season in the
Ontario Hockey Association
Junior "D" western division
opens Sunday when the Exeter
Hawks travel to Lambeth to meet
the Flyers. The first home start
for the Hawks will be Friday,
October 25 when the Mitchell
Hawks will be supplying the
opposition.
This year nine teams will be
competing in the area league.
Newcomers to the league are
from Port Stanley and Seaforth.
Back for another year are
Mitchell, Tavistock, Lucan,
Belmont, Lambeth and Strathroy
along with the local Hawks.
The Clinton Mustangs, league
members last year have moved
up a notch and will be competing
in a Western Ontario Junior "C"
loop,
Eight of the nine teams in the
Junior "D" league will make the
playoffs. The top three teams at
the end of the regular schedule
will have their choice in playoff
opposition in order and the fourth
place finisher will take on the
team that is left over.
The league convener this year
is Bill Sampson of London, He
will also act as statistician. -
Home games for the Exeter
club will be on three different
days. The most prevalent date is
Friday with game time set for
8:30 p.m. Three games will be
played on Sundays and starting
times are 7:30 p.m. while one
Wednesday contest will go at 8
p.m.
