Thanksgiving
Unit IV Hensall UCW met on
October 2 with 24 members
present. Mrs. James McAllister,
who chaired the meeting, opened
with Psalm 19, "The heavens
declare the glory of God and the
Heaven's proclaim his han-
diwork", followed by prayer.
Miss Amy Lammie read
Scripture from Luke and Mrs.
Tom Sherritt commented on the
Debotional which she closed with
a Thanksgiving poem and
prayer.
Mrs. C. Britton and Mrs. Eric.
Luther brought interesting ex-
cerpts from the fall Regional
meeting held in Dashwood on
October 2. The offering was taken
by Mrs. Dowson and dedicated by
Mrs. McAllister, Mrs. Tom
Sherritt gave the Treasurers
report.
Arrangements were made by
Mrs. Earl Rowe for the lunch for
the General meeting. Volunteer
helpers and pie makers for the
October 17 banquet were
arranged.
Lunch was served by the
hostess Mrs. Dowson and the
committee in charge.
4-H girls meet
The Happy. Cookers 4-H
Homemaking Club held meetings
three and four at the home of
Mrs. John Wallace on Monday
night. The roll call, A food or
recipe characteristic of England,
Scotland, Ireland, or Wales, was
answered by all members as was
the fourth roll call, a food com-
monly purchased today which
was formerly made at home.
European influence on our food
was discussed. The history of the
McIntosh apple was traced.
A work meeting was held on
Saturday and the following dishes
were made and served: Sub-
cotash, Chicken Pot Pie,
Blueberry Buckle, French Onion
Soup, Baked Bean Casserole,
Tourtiere, Grand-peres, Welsh
Rabbit, Finnan Haddie, Applie
Dumplings, and English Trifle,
The roll call for this meeting was
where your ancestors came from.
Italian and Eastern European
dishes were discussed.

Hensall Council learned
Monday that there were no ob-
jections to the proposed sewer
plan. Clerk Earl Shapton will be
notified by the government
regarding the next step in the
procedure.
Nominations for Reeve and
Council will be accepted by the
clerk from November 7 to
November 12.
Reeve John Baker and coun-
cillors were unanimous in ex-
pressing the need for a great deal
of time to be spent in the
discharging of their duties.
Reeve Baker declared Monday
that he would step down if
someone would step up.
Murray Baker said that he
would not step up and councillor
Harold Knight said that he
wished he had more time and
said he would "feel like a coward
if he quit council just when the
sewers were getting started".
Councillor Paul Neilands said
that he hasn't time to be reeve
but plans to stand for council.
Leonard Erb declared that he
had time but would only step up if
Reeve Baker retires. He said it
will not be easy if the sewers are
coming but he sincerely hoped
the rest of council wouldn't quit.
A letter from the Pineridge
Chalet regarding a night for the
councils of the surrounding
municipalities was discussed.
Councillors agreed with the plan -
providing the party was kept
private.
Permission was granted to
Tuckersmith Council to sell
lottery tickets in the Hensall
area.
Councillor Paul Neilands was
appointed to attend the meeting -2
at South Huron High School on
October 22 to discuss the
proposed Sports Complex for

Rev. Wilfred Jarvis conducted
the Sacrament of Holy Com-
munion. on Sunday morning
assisted by Elders Thomas Scott,
Calder IVIcKaig and Carter
Kerslake. At the close of the
service, Rev. Jarvis presented
those in attendance with a
Presbyterian Centennial coin in
memory of his mother who
passed away a short time ago.
Guest speaker
Mrs. Denton Taylor of
Belleville will be the guest
speaker following the
eongre,gational supper on Friday
evening The daughter of Rey,
R.G. McKay, a former minister
of this church, Mrs. Taylor is
presently head of the Board of
Congregational Life of the
Presbyterian Church in Canada.

Council decided to endorse a
resolution sent by Zurich to ask
for increased money to be made
available in order to upgrade
recreational facilities,
Building permits were ap-
proved for Lewis Clark to install
vinyl siding on the north and east
sides of his building; to Mrs. M.
Hillebrand to install a picture
window and aluminum siding; to
P. Bedard for an 8 x 10 outside
entrance to the back door and
aluminum siding; to Russell
Goldstein for an addition to the
slaughter house freezer and
workroom; to Pat O'Brien to
erect a double garage; the Cook's
Division of Gerb,ro'for an office
addition to the rear of the present

building; to Mrs. Garnett Allan to
reroof a portion of the house and
to Cecil Maxwell to renovate the
interior and replace windows.
Buck Little's water probleni
was discussed and Councillor Erb
said he thought that the ground
sloped towards the house and that
might be the cause of the
problem.
Willard Buchannan com-
plained to Council that cars and
trucks were still parking in his
driveway. Murray Baker
suggested that he take down the
license numbers of the vehicles
and council would call for the list
in two weeks.
Bills and accounts of ap-
proximately $3,331 were ap-
proved as presented.
Women take
Mexico trip
The October Thank Offering
meeting of Hensall U.C.W. was
held Monday evening in the
Church. Anita Cook acted as
Chairman and welcomed
everyone.
Sue Ann Shroeder of Dashwood
entertained by singing two lovely
solos and accompanying herself
on her guitar. Lois Shapter
presented a very meaningful
devotional discussing three little
words, kindness, friendliness,
and sympathy, words which are
not used in our society enough
these days.
Several hymns were sung with
Helen Goddard accompanying on
the piano. Grace Drummond
gave a reading entitled "A
shadow on the blind", and in-
troduced the guest speaker, Mrs.
Betty Cardno of Seaforth, who
showed very colourful slides and
commentated on her trip in
March this year to Mexico.
President, Kay Mock presided
for the business portion of the
meeting, and opened with a
Thanksgiving poem. Minutes of
the May meeting were read and
approved. Correspondence was
read which consisted of , two
letters of thanks, one from
Chiselhurst U.C.W., and the other
from Jane Davidson in ap-
preciation for the donation sent to
Father Abraham in India.
Helen Scane gave the
Treasurers report, and Pearl
Erratt reported for the Supply
and Welfare Committee, and
announced that there will be a
bale packed on October 22.
Articles are to be left at the
Church before that date. She also
read letters of thanks from places
where the bales were sent in
May. Ann Brock reported for the
Social Functions Committee and
announced the Banquet to be held
at Brucefield school on October
17.
Anita Cook reported on the
Friendship and Visitation
Committee, Sadie Hoy reported
on the flower committee and also
announced that the United
Church Observer is going up in
price in January 75.

are baptized
Rev. Wilfred Jarvis conducted
Holy Communion Service in
Carmel Presbyterian Church on
Sunday and baptized Lorena
Lynn infant daughter of Mr. &
Mrs. Brian Fink, and Wendy
Baynham, sister of Mrs. Fink.
\ Mr. & Mrs. Roy Brock were
godparents for the Fink baby.
The choir under the direction of
Mrs. Malcolm Dougall sang "One
Sabbath Morn".
